Perry Harvey Park – Ybor City, Florida

Expedition 555 USA – Florida – Ybor City Perry Harvey Park

This park is more than just a grassy spot; it’s a bubbling celebration of history, culture, and community spirit!

They converged here, creating a lively, diverse family and making the area a cigar-making paradise.

Let me tell you about Perry Harvey, Sr. He wasn’t just any leader—he was a true trailblazer for dock workers.  As the president of Longshoreman’s Union Local #1402, he advocated for fair wages and better working conditions.

His hard work created a robust black middle class, opening doors to job opportunities and encouraging families to save for their future.

Perry was also instrumental in constructing the first black-owned apartment complex and plaza, a bustling business hub, including a bank and a supermarket.

A visionary in the Civil Rights movement, he fought to desegregate schools and championed educational opportunities for all children.

His dedication resulted in the formation of the Head Start Program, demonstrating how one person’s commitment can uplift an entire community.  What a ripple effect he created!

As I explore, I can feel the enchantment of the past tickling my rubbery feathers.

Did you know this spot once served as a haven for African Americans during the Civil War?

It’s a place brimming with heart and history, and a privilege to be here.

Perfect for a leisurely stroll or a quick splash during a morning jog!

Picnic areas, playgrounds, sports facilities, clean restrooms, water fountains, and ample parking.

There is simply no reason to go anywhere else!
