  • Coral Castle – Homestead, Florida

    Coral Castle – Homestead, Florida

Quack, quack!  Bob here, and I have a tale as fabulous as a sun-soaked Florida day! My journey led me to Coral Castle, a magical place in Homestead, which left me floating with wonder.

Once upon a time, in a land of sunshine and warm breezes, there stood a very peculiar castle, all made of coral! This isn’t just any ol’ castle. It was crafted by the hands of a single genius—Edward Leedskalnin, a true character whose story is as intriguing as a feather in the wind!  The uniqueness of Coral Castle is a story waiting to be discovered.

As I bobbed along with my human companions, we found ourselves at the entrance, home to a charming little gift shop—a store full of trinkets and treasures—perfect for a rubber duck like me! But I was poised to explore the absolute marvel—the Coral Castle.

When we approached, my eyes widened (as wide as a rubber duck’s eyes can get)! The towering coral formations were a sight like nothing I had seen before.

Our knowledgeable guide launched into Edward’s legendary saga.  Picture this: a Latvian immigrant with a heart heavy enough to sink a ship, all because his fiancée Agnes jilted him right before their wedding day! Talk about a love story with a twist!

In 1923, Edward turned his heartbreak into a monumental love letter.  Working under the soft glow of the moonlight (how poetic!), he carved and moved massive coral blocks—some weighing as much as me and all my duck friends combined!

Seriously, how did this guy do it?  Was he secretly a superhero? Some folks say he used ancient techniques, while others think he had a sprinkle of magic in his toolbox. I imagined him there, all 5 feet of him, working diligently while I floated nearby, cheering him on in spirit! I think I will buy the book and have my humans read it to me so I can discover the mystery.

But in the meantime, as we wandered through the enchanting stone corridors, I watched my humans marvel at his creations.  There were stunning walls, intricate archways, and a sundial that could tell its own stories.

My favorite was the Moon Fountain, where water danced gracefully as it reflected the sunlight—what a romantic touch!  Edward was trying to send a wink to Agnes from beyond, a gesture that still resonates with visitors today.

My companions snapped photos, laughed, and oohed and aahed at the marvelous details Edward had carved. Each stone told a tale of dedication and love, turning sorrow into a legacy that would make even a rubber duck’s heart swell with pride.  The air was thick with magic and emotion as shadows frolicked across the coral walls, and I couldn’t help but feel Edward’s spirit—a testament to the strength of the human heart, lingering in the whispers of the wind.

Even though Edward took his final bow in 1951, his creation remains—a quirky monument to resilience and creativity.  Coral Castle stands as a testament to how love, even when lost, can inspire beautiful creations.  While I floated there, I contemplated the mysteries of life and love, feeling a profound connection to Edward, who turned his heartbreak into an extraordinary castle of dreams.

So, here’s the quack of the day: If you ever find yourself near Homestead, don’t miss the chance to visit Coral Castle. It’s a place where magic, love, and a little rubber duck like me can all find a home among the tales of the heart!

  • Southernmost Point – Key West, Florida

Southernmost Point – Key West, Florida

Hello, fellow adventurers! Today, I am sharing my latest splashing escapade in the unique and vibrant Key West, Florida. This paradise is home to the renowned Southernmost Point Buoy, a colourful landmark with a rich history that has drawn visitors from all corners of the globe for well over 100 years.

My adventure begins with a dive into the rich history of Key West. Before the influx of tourists, this area was inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta tribes. The name “Key West” is derived from the Spanish “Cayo Hueso,” which means “Bone Key,” a reference to the numerous bones discovered here. In the early 19th century, Key West emerged as a significant center for shipwreck salvage, cigar production, and sponge fishing, marking its historical importance. Surprisingly, by the mid-1800s, it was the wealthiest city in Florida!

As I floated through the historic streets, I was captivated by the unique architecture surrounding me that spanned many historical years of Key West.

One of the standout structures is the Edwardo H. Gato House, a stunning example of Queen Anne architecture dating back to 1894. Edwardo H. Gato, Sr.. was not just a historical figure; he was a local leader and passionate Cuban patriot who advocated for figures like José Martí in the fight for independence from Spain. The Edwardo H. Gato House stands as a testament to his legacy, a living connection to the past. Upon his arrival in Key West in 1874, he transformed the area from a simple fishing village into a vibrant center, driving the Cuban tobacco industry forward—his cigar factory even became the largest in Key West!

Just a hop, skip, and a splash down the street, you’ll find the charming Harris House. Picture this: on April 2, 1891, two notable families—the Harris and the Curry—came together in a union that felt like a whimsical wave crashing together. Here, J. Vining Harris, Jr. married Florida E. Curry, merging two influential families of the late 19th century Key West scene, whose legacy continues to shape the history of this vibrant city.

In 1906, Vining made a savvy purchase of property on South Street for a mere $3,500. He built three adorable Queen Anne-style homes, like little boats bobbing in a sunny harbour—perfect for family gatherings!

Today, the Harris House shines as a cherished gem, blending history with family legacy. Its place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983 speaks volumes about its importance to Key West’s rich narrative.

A beautiful statue, a visual masterpiece dedicated to the unforgettable Bishop Albert Kee, is not far down the road. Kee, a local legend until his passing in 2003, was the friendly face at the Southernmost Point, selling beautiful fluted conch shells to every passerby. He and his dad spent over 50 years, a testament to their unwavering dedication, welcoming visitors with conch shell demonstrations and showcasing the rich multicultural vibe that makes this island unique.

And what could be the cause of the excited gathering of humans? They were all making their way to the Southernmost Point marker, just like me! Erected in 1983, this buoy marks the southernmost point of the continental U.S., a mere 90 miles from the shores of Cuba. It’s not just a buoy; it’s a symbol of history and connection. It has become an essential stop for travellers eager to grab that iconic photo with the vibrant red, yellow, and black buoy. I’ve witnessed countless tourists pose triumphantly, arms raised high as if they’re closest to the edge of the world!

Today, Key West stands as a unique blend of culture, festivity, and undeniable charm. Its streets are adorned with pastel-hued conch-style houses, and the air is filled with the alluring aroma of fresh seafood. This is a place that is truly one-of-a-kind, a unique travel destination that promises an adventure like no other. Just imagine this little rubber duck floating through all the laughter, joy, and history—what a quack-tastic adventure!

You might be wondering what a rubber duck like me has to do with cigars.  Well, as a curious and adventurous rubber duck, I’m like to find unique and interesting stories.

The story of the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory is as rich and layered as a beautifully rolled cigar!

As I bobbed around in my little tub, I saw generations of skilled artisans working tirelessly. They were crafting cigars that have captured the hearts of enthusiasts far and wide.

  • José Marti Park – Ybor City, Florida

José Marti Park – Ybor City, Florida

It feels as if I’ve been transported straight to Cuba. The lively atmosphere and rich culture embrace me like a warm hug.  Moreover, the park serves as a living tribute to the enduring legacy of José Marti.

It is a tribute to José Martí, a legendary Cuban poet and revolutionary who dedicated his life to Cuban independence.  As I drift by the majestic statue of Martí, I can almost feel his spirit inspiring me.

Born on January 28, 1853, in Havana, he became a prominent figure in Latin American literature. In addition, he earned a revered place in Cuban history.

Martí believed in justice, education, and cultural identity.  He sought independence and unity among different factions in the struggle against colonialism.

In 1895, he co-founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party and became a guiding force in the Cuban War of Independence.

Although he tragically lost his life in battle on May 19, 1895, his legacy continues to spark movements for freedom and social justice across Latin America.

Born on June 14, 1845, he was a fearless leader in the independence movement known for his strategic guerrilla warfare. With courage and a dream of liberty, he rallied countless souls. Many joined his fight against Spanish forces.

Maceo’s advocacy for racial equality and the abolition of slavery made him a beacon of hope for many, especially among Afro-Cubans.

One of his legendary campaigns, the “Invasion of the West” in 1895, saw him travel across Cuba. Along the way, he ignited the flames of rebellion wherever he went.

Tragically, his journey ended too soon when he fell in battle on December 7, 1896. Yet, his spirit continues to inspire generations of Cubans.

Their struggle for justice and freedom is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. This sentiment resonates even with a little rubber duck like me!

His hard work created a robust black middle class, opening doors to job opportunities and encouraging families to save for their future.

Perry was also instrumental in constructing the first black-owned apartment complex and plaza, a bustling business hub, including a bank and a supermarket.

Historic District – St. Augustine, Florida

Today, I embarked on a delightful adventure in the charming streets of St. Augustine, Florida!  From my cozy perch in my human backpack, I was excited to explore the oldest city in the United States.

As we arrived, I was immediately captivated by the stunning Spanish architecture surrounding us.

The historic Castillo de San Marcos, with its formidable walls and scenic views of Matanzas Bay, was a highlight!  My human even let me sit on the parapets for a photo—talk about a quack-tastic view!

  • Castillo de Sans Marcos – St. Augustine, Florida

Castillo de Sans Marcos – St. Augustine, Florida

Today was splashtastic as I paddled my way to St. Augustine, Florida!  Can you believe I got to see the historic Castillo de San Marcos?  Just imagine me bobbing about on the gentle waves of the Matanzas River, gazing at that massive fortress standing proud against the bright blue sky.  Those coquina walls looked so inviting; they practically called my name!

Let me tell you, Castillo San Marcos is not just any old fort; it’s one of the most incredible national parks in the Sunshine State!  This magnificent structure was built way back in the 17th century, starting in 1672, by the clever Spanish to keep their empire safe from nosy neighbours.  They had to deal with the British, pirates, and who knows what else!

The fort has a remarkable history of resilience.  In 1702, the British attempted to attack, but to no avail.  They couldn’t breach those impenetrable walls, not even when they set the city ablaze!  This is a fort with some serious street cred!  Subsequent attacks in 1728 and 1740 were just as fruitless—those Brits must’ve been so frustrated!

After a whirlwind of history, Florida became a British colony in 1763.  This place has seen many changes; it’s like a soap opera!  During the Revolutionary War, the Castillo transformed into a military prison and held three signers of the Declaration of Independence within its walls.  Can you imagine the stories they must have shared?

I felt a bit awestruck by the impressive row of cannons and the fascinating history of weaponry that played a vital role in protecting this significant piece of land.

When Florida returned to Spain in 1784, the Castillo was renamed Fort Marion in honour of a revolutionary hero.  By 1822, Florida had permanently become under the domain of the United States, and in a heartwarming twist, it returned to its original name, Castillo de San Marcos, in 1942!

Now, let’s talk about the vibes!  The fort was buzzing with families snapping photos, and I couldn’t help but chuckle as little ones posed with their rubber duckies!  I, of course, had the best view!  Peeking through those narrow windows, I imagined the brave soldiers who once stood sentinel, watching the glimmering waters.  The ramparts offered stunning views of the coastline and sailboats gliding along, and oh, how I wished for a ride!  But alas, I’m just a duck!

This stronghold has seen over 315 years of history, and here I was—a little rubber duck soaking it all in.

When I returned to my cozy little pond, I couldn’t wait to regale my bath toy buddies with tales of my day at Castillo de San Marcos!  I might be a quacking duck, but now I’m carrying a treasure trove of history.  Quack-tastic, right?

  • Bridge of Lions – St. Augustine, Florida

Bridge of Lions – St. Augustine, Florida

Hey there, adventure seekers!  It’s Bob here, paddling through the magical waters of St. Augustine, Florida—where the past dances with the present like the waves doing the cha-cha all around me!  Today, I’m right by the iconic Bridge of Lions, this fantastic drawbridge that whisks visitors from the city’s lively streets to the sun-kissed shores of Anastasia Island, all while crossing the sparkling Matanzas Bay.

Now, let me set the scene!  Picture this: a duo of majestic marble lion statues stand guard over the bridge, looking like they’ve just stepped out of an Italian Renaissance painting!  These royal guardians, replicas of Florence’s famous Medici lions, have been watching since the bridge opened its doors in 1927.  They’ve had their share of adventures, too—after a bit of a makeover and some relocation drama, they roared back to their posts in March 2011, ready to oversee one of the most picturesque spots in the nation’s oldest city, famously known as “The Most Beautiful Bridge in Dixie.” Talk about a lion’s share of the glory!

What I love most about this bridge is how it fuses beauty and functions like a finely tuned ukulele.  It’s a hotspot for duck-hoppers like me, with lush palm trees, charming gazebos, and a cool new dock extending into the bay, perfect for catching a sunset or just soaking up the vibes.  And here’s the kicker—every hour and half hour, from 7 AM to 6 PM, the bridge raises its arms in a grand theatrical display for passing boats.  Just picture it—a pirate ship gliding through as the lions look on with their stoic gaze!

Speaking of pirates, I had a moment of panic when I saw one coming through!  My little heart raced and I nearly quacked my pants, thinking, “Oh no!  The pirates are taking over!” But fear not!  The Black Raven is a pirate ship designed for live performances.  Phew!  I dodged a close one there.

As I drift along, the air is filled with laughter and the magical sounds of storytelling.  Families come together, sharing moments as precious as gold, all while surrounded by the charm of this historic site.  There’s something heartwarming about the way people connect here, turning the Bridge of Lions into not just a crossing but a symbol of unity echoing the rich heritage of St. Augustine.

As the sun dips low, painting the sky in glorious shades of gold and rose, I can’t help but feel thankful.  This isn’t just a stunning bridge; it’s a treasured icon of St. Augustine, woven into the vibrant tapestry of the city’s story.  I feel beyond lucky to soak it all in!
