Black Bear Casino and Resort – Carlton, Minnesota

As we waddled our way North on the return from sunny Florida, we found ourselves in an unexpected snow globe of blizzard conditions. Road advisories were in effect while crossing through Minnesota.

Lucky for us, our path glided near Carlton. During our search for a cozy resting spot, we stumbled upon the delightful Black Bear Casino Resort.

What a vibrant gem nestled in a charming little town?

We made a quick call, and like magic, they rolled out the welcome mat for us. They invited us in from the swirling storm. As we bobbed along the driveway, the towering 12-story hotel loomed majestically ahead. It was ready to embrace our flurry of adventures.

Beyond the comfy accommodations, Black Bear Casino boasts around 2000 video slot machines. With four dining experiences ranging from casual café bites to elegant fine dining. Additionally, it has an event center for performances and even a lovely golf course complete with a driving range!

Now that’s a lot of fun packed into one place!

Our room was nothing short of a cloud-like haven, offering us a panoramic view of the winter wonderland outside. From the safety of our lair, I watched as the snow danced and swirled around in a flurry of white. And let me tell you about the bed—oh, it is like being gently cradled by fluffy marshmallows! A perfect perch for a thrilling double night while we hunkered down against the storm.

Black Bear Casino is proudly owned and operated by the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. It’s just a couple of hours from Minneapolis, making it a fantastic getaway for city folks. It’s an excellent spot to unwind, catch a concert, or play a round of golf when the sun is shining.

Sure, there wasn’t a concert during our stay, but the roster of artists they’ve hosted is impressive! ZZ Top, Trace Adkins, the Beach Boys, and Clint Black have all rocked the stage here.

While the golf course might have been closed for the season, avid snowmobile enthusiasts can zip along the nearby trails. These trails make the most of winter’s gifts.

The gaming area was bright, lively, and oh-so-tempting! My humans spent quite a bit of time giving those machines a whirl.

There were highs and lows, of course, with some wins and a few losses. Ultimately, they left with a bit less cash than when they arrived.

All in all, the food was delicious, the rooms were spick and span, and the gaming provided endless entertainment.

After a necessary supply run at a nearby Walmart, we were all set to continue our journey. This preparation came just as the storm rolled on.

Now, here’s a fun twist: In the 1950s, Monkey Jungle became a superstar in the world of conservation! It launched breeding programs for some of the cutest critters – the adorable squirrel monkeys and the clever capuchins. As the name suggests, the park focuses on the monkeying around (pun intended), but more residents add additional life to Monkey Jungle.

Just when I thought I had no more friends to discover, I spotted a giant lizard hanging out with the monkeys while colourful fish danced in the pond.

A little further into the labyrinth, friendly turtles were busy eating lunch while a sleepy lizard bathed in the sun.

I even visited with various feathered friends of many colours who squawked to get my attention.

The park collaborates with various organizations to protect endangered species and share the magical message of biodiversity with everyone. As I float along, my little duck heart swells with pride for the hard work that goes into keeping our planet happy and healthy for all creatures great and small. It’s truly inspiring to see such dedication to our natural world.

From my cozy spot bobbing in the waves, I’ve discovered the towering lighthouse’s fascinating journey through history, and it’s a tale filled with adventure!

The Cape Florida Lighthouse, completed in 1825, is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County. It’s a testament to resilience, having weathered countless storms and illuminated myriad journeys. Imagine the sight of ships sailing through the shimmering waters of Biscayne Bay, guided safely home by the warm glow of this iconic beacon!

In the early years, the lighthouse faced its fair share of challenges, including damage during the Second Seminole War. The dedicated lighthouse keeper, a brave soul, battled the elements and war tensions. In 1860, the lighthouse underwent a remarkable transformation, rising to a towering 95 feet and adorned with a new brick facade and a shiny Fresnel lens, making its light visible from miles away.

Throughout the years, the lighthouse faced the wear and tear of both nature and time, leading to periods of neglect. It was crafted by the hands of a single genius—Edward Leedskalnin, a true character whose story is as intriguing as a feather in the wind! The uniqueness of Coral Castle is a story waiting to be discovered.

As I bobbed along with my human companions, we found ourselves at the entrance, home to a charming little gift shop—a store full of trinkets and treasures—perfect for a rubber duck like me! But I was poised to explore the absolute marvel—the Coral Castle.

When we approached, my eyes widened (as wide as a rubber duck’s eyes can get)! The towering coral formations were a sight like nothing I had seen before.

Our knowledgeable guide launched into Edward’s legendary saga. Picture this: a Latvian immigrant with a heart heavy enough to sink a ship, all because his fiancée Agnes jilted him right before their wedding day! Talk about a love story with a twist!

In 1923, Edward turned his heartbreak into a monumental love letter. Working under the soft glow of the moonlight (how poetic!), he carved and moved massive coral blocks—some weighing as much as me and all my duck friends combined!

Everywhere I looked, rock memorabilia celebrated the legends who shaped the music scene—every corner brought a smile to my beak.

From iconic outfits worn by superstars like Cher, Madonna, Rihanna and even the cast of The Wizard of Oz
to stunning waterfalls and marble features, the decor was a feast for my eyes (and rubber ducky soul!).

It was like stepping into a world of music and luxury, where every corner held a new surprise. I felt like a celebrity just being there!

When I reached the bustling casino floor, I was ready for action! There were so many vibrant slot machines calling my name. My friends, with whom I was traveling, helped me find the luckiest slot machine.

With my tiny heart racing, I flapped my wings excitedly as I watched the reels spin. Each pull of the lever was filled with anticipation until—BING! The machine lit up, and the sound of jingling coins filled the air. We scored a big win that covered the cost of a new tire for Goldie—what an exhilarating moment! My adventure begins with a dive into the rich history of Key West. Before the influx of tourists, this area was inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta tribes. The name “Key West” is derived from the Spanish “Cayo Hueso,” which means “Bone Key,” a reference to the numerous bones discovered here. In the early 19th century, Key West emerged as a significant center for shipwreck salvage, cigar production, and sponge fishing, marking its historical importance. Surprisingly, by the mid-1800s, it was the wealthiest city in Florida!

As I floated through the historic streets, I was captivated by the unique architecture surrounding me that spanned many historical years of Key West.

One of the standout structures is the Edwardo H. Gato House, a stunning example of Queen Anne architecture dating back to 1894. Edwardo H. Gato, Sr.. was not just a historical figure; he was a local leader and passionate Cuban patriot who advocated for figures like José Martí in the fight for independence from Spain. The Edwardo H. Gato House stands as a testament to his legacy, a living connection to the past. Upon his arrival in Key West in 1874, he transformed the area from a simple fishing village into a vibrant center, driving the Cuban tobacco industry forward—his cigar factory even became the largest in Key West!

Just a hop, skip, and a splash down the street, you’ll find the charming Harris House. Picture this: on April 2, 1891, two notable families—the Harris and the Curry—came together in a union that felt like a whimsical wave crashing together. Here, J. Vining Harris, Jr. married Florida E. Curry, merging two influential families of the late 19th century Key West scene, whose legacy continues to shape the history of this vibrant city.

In 1906, Vining made a savvy purchase of property on South Street for a mere $3,500. He built three adorable Queen Anne-style homes, like little boats bobbing in a sunny harbour—perfect for family gatherings!

Today, the Harris House shines as a cherished gem, blending history with family legacy. Its place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983 speaks volumes about its importance to Key West’s rich narrative.

A beautiful statue, a visual masterpiece dedicated to the unforgettable Bishop Albert Kee, is not far down the road. Kee, a local legend until his passing in 2003, was the friendly face at the Southernmost Point, selling beautiful fluted conch shells to every passerby. He and his dad spent over 50 years, a testament to their unwavering dedication, welcoming visitors with conch shell demonstrations and showcasing the rich multicultural vibe that makes this island unique.

And what could be the cause of the excited gathering of humans? They were all making their way to the Southernmost Point marker, just like me! Erected in 1983, this buoy marks the southernmost point of the continental U.S., a mere 90 miles from the shores of Cuba. It’s not just a buoy; it’s a symbol of history and connection. It has become an essential stop for travellers eager to grab that iconic photo with the vibrant red, yellow, and black buoy. I’ve witnessed countless tourists pose triumphantly, arms raised high as if they’re closest to the edge of the world!

Today, Key West stands as a unique blend of culture, festivity, and undeniable charm. Its streets are adorned with pastel-hued conch-style houses, and the air is filled with the alluring aroma of fresh seafood. This is a place that is truly one-of-a-kind, a unique travel destination that promises an adventure like no other. Since opening its doors in 2021, the Roadhouse has become the ultimate hangout for motorcycle enthusiasts and food lovers.

The menu is a feast for the senses!

There’s something for everyone, from juicy burgers that make my little beak water to scrumptious wings (OUCH) that I can almost taste.

The bar serves up an array of refreshing cocktails.

Beers, and non-alcoholic options, perfect for washing down a day of adventure!

Then there is the tribute to the renowned Orange County Choppers (OCC), a motorcycle brand with a story as rich as my beloved pond!

Founded in 1999 by the dynamic duo Paul Teutul Sr. and his creative whiz son, Paul Jr.

The Teutuls skyrocketed to fame through the blockbuster TV series American Chopper.

Watching them build custom bikes while navigating family antics is as thrilling as a joyride down the coast!

AT OCC Roadhouse, you’ll find a kaleidoscope of memorabilia and the legendary bikes that have graced the OCC family.

Let’s pivot to the real stars of the show: the bikes!

Oh, how my little rubber heart races as I float around the polished showroom! These bikes are not merely machines; they’re rolling works of art!

Each one is a testament to creativity and engineering brilliance, infused with the true spirit of the open road.

These magnificent machines pay homage to fallen heroes, military veterans, and even the iconic Space Shuttle Challenger.

Pier 60 – Clearwater Bay, Florida

Get ready for a one-of-a-kind adventure at the enchanting Pier 60 in Clearwater Bay, Florida!

I’m excited to share my unforgettable day at this unique destination. A great blend of stunning sunsets, delightful entertainment, and a sprinkle of adventure.

The beach stretches for miles, sunbathers soaking up those glorious rays while families laugh and play.

The actual pier was a no-go zone on my visit—repair work from the hurricane season. It meant I couldn’t get my float there. But no worries, the beach still had plenty to offer!

The sand here is like a fluffy cloud under my little webbed feet!

Waddling on the golden shore, I felt the fine grains hugging me like a cozy nest, perfect for a duck just lazing around!

I couldn’t help but squeak with delight as I watched kids enjoying the weather. They were building towering sandcastles that looked like royal duck palaces!

And guess what? The beach is as clean as a whistle! I paddled about, proud to splash around in such a pristine paradise!

But the magic didn’t end with the sunset.

As twilight settled in, Pier 60 came alive with a vibrant energy. Street performers gathered, and the first stars began to twinkle overhead. Jugglers, magicians, and dancers filled the air with laughter and excitement. I happily bobbed along with the beat, feeling the electric energy of the crowd.

It was a celebration that perfectly complemented the beauty of the setting sun, keeping everyone entertained and excited!

My human was tired, so we did not engage in the merriment following the sunset. But there was certainly no shortage of smiles and laughter!

He set up shop in Ybor City, a bustling enclave known for its cigar-making heritage and rich cultural tapestry.

At that time, Ybor City was a melting pot of cultures. Cuban, Italian, and Spanish influences were weaving together to create a unique community.

What makes this park unique to me is its profound cultural significance.

It is a tribute to José Martí, a legendary Cuban poet and revolutionary who dedicated his life to Cuban independence. As I drift by the majestic statue of Martí, I can almost feel his spirit inspiring me.

José Martí was more than just a national symbol; he was a passionate journalist and writer who played a crucial role in Cuba’s fight for independence from Spanish rule.

Born on January 28, 1853, in Havana, he became a prominent figure in Latin American literature. In addition, he earned a revered place in Cuban history.

Martí believed in justice, education, and cultural identity. He sought independence and unity among different factions in the struggle against colonialism.

The unique Manatee Viewing Center in sunny Tampa Bay, Florida, is dedicated to the gentle giants of the ocean, the manatees!

They gather in the waters, and you could have the unique opportunity to witness their underwater ballet from the front row!

Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, the weather was too hot for the manatees to come out and play.

Manatees are not all you can see…not even close.

There are many fish species and, of course, air-borne feathered friends.

The expansive center boasts a network of trails perfect for a stroll.

These trails wind through lush coastal habitats, offering scenic bay views at every turn.

They are ideal for a duck like me to float around on, but also super easy for everyone to explore, whether you’re a curious kid or a wise grandparent.

Now, let’s quack about the educational center!

This place is a treasure trove of fun facts about my big, blubbery buddies.

With interactive exhibits and colourful displays, it’s like a splash party with knowledge!

The always smiling, knowledgeable staff lead guided tours that make learning a blast.

Bob, here to give you the scoop on my recent splashing adventure at Aquatica Water Park in sunny Orlando, Florida! This water wonderland has made quite an impression on my rubbery heart.

Here’s my ducky take on the park’s attractions, dining options, and those oh-so-comfy cabanas!

Let me start with the cabanas—oh, how I loved them! As a duck always on the go (or float), having a private cabana was like having my little pond-side paradise.

These cabanas come with comfy lounge chairs, a shaded retreat from the blazing sun, a safe for your valuables, a fridge stocked with water and even an attendant to ensure you have everything you need.

I felt like royalty as I lounged in my rubbery glory, sipping a refreshing drink.

The cabana area is perfect for families looking to break from the excitement while still being close to the action. I highly recommend reserving one to add a touch of luxury to your Aquatica experience!

Now, onto the food! Aquatica has various dining options that will satisfy even the pickiest of ducklings.

I waddled over to the “Riptide Pizza,” where I was delighted to see the delicious aroma of fresh pizza wafting through the air. Watching the kids enjoy cheesy slices made my beak water!

I even spotted some tasty treats for the sweet-toothed, like refreshing fruity popsicles—perfect for cooling down after a day of splashing!

There are also options like “Banana Beach Cookout” and “Waterstone Grill,” offering everything from burgers to salads.

I chose street tacos with a side of Mexican rice and a pickle for extra zing. YUM!

The main attraction, of course, is the rides!

Aquatica is home to some thrilling attractions, and I couldn’t resist hopping on a few! The “Walhalla Wave” is an absolute must-try. It’s an exhilarating and unique waterslide you maneuver in a tube. Not only do you waddle your way up through six stories of waves but you also experience a zero gravity wall!

For those seeking a more leisurely float, the “Lazy River” provides the perfect opportunity to relax and soak up the sun. I took my time drifting along, letting the gentle current carry me through lush landscapes and past beautiful waterfalls. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of gliding through crystal-clear water!

Let’s not forget the “Riptide Race,” where I witnessed some serious competitive spirit among the riders. Racing down the slide, the excitement was palpable, and I couldn’t help but cheer on my fellow water adventurers from my cozy spot by the pool!

What a great experience I had at Boggy Creek Adventures in Kissimmee, Florida.

As a seasoned adventurer (and a duck with a taste for fun), I waddled through an unforgettable day filled with excitement, exploration, and a few tasty bites!

My adventure kicked off with gem mining!

There’s nothing like splashing around in the water while searching for shiny treasures.

The staff provided us with a bucket of dirt and rocks, and with a bit of elbow grease, my cousins and I uncovered some dazzling gems!

It was a feast for the eyes, from sparkling quartz to shimmering garnets.

I even found a few pieces I proudly displayed on my nest at the pond.

This activity is a must for any feathered friends or kids looking to channel their inner treasure hunters!

Next, I flapped to the butterfly garden, where I enjoyed feeding the most beautiful butterflies.

With colourful wings fluttering around, I felt like I was in a magical world!

The staff provided me with nectar-filled feeding pods, and I was delighted to see butterflies land gently on my beak.

Watching them dance from flower to flower was a sight, even though they were camera-shy.

It was a serene experience that made my heart flutter just as much as the butterflies.

Of course, I fluttered joyfully to some feathered friends, who did not escape my camera lens.

Now, let’s talk about the boat tour, what an adventure!

I hopped on board with my fellow adventurers, and we cruised through the scenic waters of Boggy Creek. The captain, Tanner, shared fascinating stories about the local wildlife.

I was thrilled to see all sorts of critters, from alligators lounging in the sun to herons gracefully gliding above and stopping for a quick picture.
The lush surroundings made for a picturesque experience, and I even quacked a few tunes to entertain my boatmates!

After all that fun, I was ready for a snack!

The Giraffe Ranch – Dade City, Florida
Hey there, fellow water lovers! It’s me, Bob, to tell you about my exciting trip to Giraffe Ranch in Dade City, Florida! Get ready for a splash of wildlife fun!

Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Dade City, Giraffe Ranch is a wonderland where you can get up close and personal with some of the most majestic creatures on the planet. Owned by a passionate husband-and-wife duo who genuinely love their furry friends, this place is like a cozy animal home and a playground for conservation enthusiasts! It’s a unique experience that will leave you in awe.

Imagine rolling through 47 acres where habitats are specially designed to mimic the natural homes of all the fabulous animals living there.

And guess what? It’s not just giraffes that make this place awesome! You’ll also meet many other fascinating animals like zebras, ostriches, and all sorts of antelope, to name a few. Each area is built to allow the animals to roam, thrive, and show off their playful personalities.

But Giraffe Ranch isn’t merely a showcase of incredible wildlife; it’s on a mission! With a heart full of love, the ranch actively participates in breeding programs for endangered species and works with other organizations to help protect those fantastic animals in the wild.

Our tour guide, Chris, was a true animal expert! I thought he was one of the owners because of his enthusiasm and deep knowledge. He led us through the ranch and called many furry friends by name, sharing sweet stories about unique animals he raised by hand. Did you know some of the residents were rescued? That’s right! They’re all part of a big, happy family, and the ranch is working to help some of the nearly extinct animals out in the wild.

Chris guided us through the ranch, answering all questions and imparting his knowledge of the various species.

Did you know that ostrich eggs are so durable that you can stand on them? That is nature’s way of assuring you they won’t break when the 400-pound father helps with the incubation.

I tried sitting on an older egg, but it was a little big. A friendly piece of duck knowledge for you – do not break open one of these eggs unless you are prepared for a week-long smelly surprise!

Another highlight came from the zebras group. I had no idea flies won’t land on zebras because the stripes confuse their eyesight! It makes me wish this duck was black and white. There were two unique zebras on the ranch: a zebra whose stripes were not all stripes, some were almost like zig-zags, which Chris explained was one in a million and a zebra that was an offspring that resulted from an adventure when a donkey and a zebra went on a date creating a Donkra? Or Zebkey? I am not sure which, but it was interesting, to say the least.

Now, let’s get to the show’s stars—Neal and Phil, two of the fabulous giraffes! These gentle giants stole my heart (as much as a rubber duck’s heart can be stolen).

As I stroll by the orchards, the sweetest Navel oranges surround me. The aroma of these ripe fruits is so enticing that it makes me want to break into a bit of a rubber duck dance!

I chose a variety to stage a little taste test at home with my humans: Honeybell orange, Navel orange, Red Navel orange, Honey tangerine, white grapefruit, and pomelo. My humans were mixed on their favourite, but everyone loved the flavour of the pomelo and ate it so fast that I did not get time to add to the picture.

But wait, the most exciting treat of all is their homemade ice cream! Picture this: creamy scoops infused with fresh fruit flavours served as sweet summer nostalgia. The orange creamsicle flavour? It takes me back to sunny afternoons with my duck pals, quacking happily on the porch. Families gather, laughter ringing in the air as each scoop brings smiles.

Historic District – St. Augustine, Florida

Today, I embarked on a delightful adventure in the charming streets of St. Augustine, Florida! From my cozy perch in my human backpack, I was excited to explore the oldest city in the United States.

As we arrived, I was immediately captivated by the stunning Spanish architecture surrounding us.

The historic Castillo de San Marcos, with its formidable walls and scenic views of Matanzas Bay, was a highlight! My human even let me sit on the parapets for a photo—talk about a quack-tastic view!

Next, we waddled down the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, where I admired the quaint shops and vibrant colours of the buildings. The smell of fresh fudge wafted through the air, and I wished I could indulge. But what I did get to do was become a pirate! Even if just for a quick picture.

We stumbled upon the famous Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. My human tossed a penny in for good luck, and I couldn’t help but wonder if a splash of water might grant me eternal youth (or at least a good scrub!). We explored the lush gardens and even learned about the indigenous Timucua people—what a rich history!

Castillo de Sans Marcos – St. Augustine, Florida

Today was splashtastic as I paddled my way to St. Augustine, Florida! Can you believe I got to see the historic Castillo de San Marcos? Just imagine me bobbing about on the gentle waves of the Matanzas River, gazing at that massive fortress standing proud against the bright blue sky. Those coquina walls looked so inviting; they practically called my name!

Let me tell you, Castillo San Marcos is not just any old fort; it’s one of the most incredible national parks in the Sunshine State! This magnificent structure was built way back in the 17th century, starting in 1672, by the clever Spanish to keep their empire safe from nosy neighbours. They had to deal with the British, pirates, and who knows what else!

The fort has a remarkable history of resilience. In 1702, the British attempted to attack, but to no avail. They couldn’t breach those impenetrable walls, not even when they set the city ablaze! This is a fort with some serious street cred! Subsequent attacks in 1728 and 1740 were just as fruitless—those Brits must’ve been so frustrated!

After a whirlwind of history, Florida became a British colony in 1763. This place has seen many changes; it’s like a soap opera! During the Revolutionary War, the Castillo transformed into a military prison and held three signers of the Declaration of Independence within its walls. Can you imagine the stories they must have shared?

I felt a bit awestruck by the impressive row of cannons and the fascinating history of weaponry that played a vital role in protecting this significant piece of land.

When Florida returned to Spain in 1784, the Castillo was renamed Fort Marion in honour of a revolutionary hero. By 1822, Florida had permanently become under the domain of the United States, and in a heartwarming twist, it returned to its original name, Castillo de San Marcos, in 1942!

Now, let’s talk about the vibes! The fort was buzzing with families snapping photos, and I couldn’t help but chuckle as little ones posed with their rubber duckies! I, of course, had the best view! Peeking through those narrow windows, I imagined the brave soldiers who once stood sentinel, watching the glimmering waters.
