This family treasure has been spreading sugary happiness through its handcrafted treats for decades, and let me tell you, it’s a story that’ll make your beak twitch with joy!
It all started with Sandy Ostlund, who, inspired by his wonderful mother, whipped up donut magic using a classic buttermilk recipe and a trusty cast-iron pan on a coal-burning stove.
Just imagine the aroma wafting through the air. My feathers are fluffing up just thinking about it!
Picture Sandy on his 52nd birthday, pondering his life’s next big leap.
A good friend suggests opening a donut shop. With dreams of fluffy confections dancing like jellyfish in his mind, Sandy found a quaint bakery that was waiting for a sprinkle of magic.
On September 13, 1983, Sandy and his delightful wife, Donna, opened their doors to a sugary wonderland. They were so busy that they even took naps in sleeping bags in the back room, now that’s dedication!
Fast forward to 2002, when their son Mark dove into the delicious world of donuts.
Together, they blended love and laughter into every batch, ensuring that each donut was crafted with a dollop of joy.
In 2008, Sandy’s health took a little dip, but his legacy didn’t sink, it soared!
In 2014, Sandy’s expanded to Downtown Fargo, and in 2019, the Osgood area got its own dose of donut magic.
Mark kept the sprinkles flying and the dream alive!
In 2022, the baton was passed to Jeff (Mark’s son).
A true testament to family values to have a third generation stepping in to carry on the family legacy!
He now leads the charge, ensuring every bite is filled with love and a sense of nostalgia!
Today, Sandy’s Donuts brings smiles as far as Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes.

The team helped my humans choose from the remaining flavours, cheerfully apologizing for the limited selection so late in the day!
Sandy’s has splashed from its humble beginnings into a donut powerhouse, with multiple locations and a whole fleet of delivery vehicles spreading sugary joy far and wide.
It’s absolutely inspiring to see how, from a little idea sparked by Sandy’s job loss, there are now over 100 smiling faces serving up more than 10,000 donuts each day!
