Oh boy, let me tell you about the splashtastic adventure I had at Myrtie Mae’s Diner in Eureka Springs, Arkansas! I was positively bubbling with excitement as we paddled our way to this local treasure. We were on a delicious quest to try the infamous possum pie! We had heard whispers about this decadent Arkansas dessert, and I was eager to finally try it out.

Now, the tale of Myrtie Mae’s Diner is as rich as the meals it serves! During the roaring 1920s, summer visitors were hitting the dusty Ozark roads in their shiny automobiles. Myrtie Mae, a savvy widow with culinary skills as sharp as a chef’s knife, saw a great opportunity to provide hearty meals to hungry campers.

Can you believe it? She was whipping up fried chicken, creamy mashed potatoes, and fresh-baked bread faster than a duck on a water slide: within just 30 minutes! This humble beginning is the foundation of the rich history that still breathes life into every corner of the diner today.
With a simple sign boasting “Home-style Chicken Dinners,” she transformed her tent into a bustling eatery. She put her skills and spirit to work to raise her six children.
As the campground evolved into cozy cabins, Myrtie also upgraded to a cabin and continued her cooking for over two decades. But it wasn’t just about the food; she filled the air with laughter, sharing stories that would make even the grumpiest traveller chuckle. Her kitchen became a beloved gathering spot in the Ozarks. Each plate served carried the warmth of her hospitality.

Fast forward to today: Myrtie Mae’s has transformed from a quaint cabin into a lively diner, all while retaining that heartwarming charm! The walls are decorated with nostalgic photographs and memorabilia. Each tells a tale of travellers’ past. As we stepped inside, the delightful aromas of comfort food enveloped me like a warm, delightful hug. I knew we were in for a real treat!

Now, let’s waddle our way to the culinary wonders!
One of the first things that caught my eye was the salad bar, an absolute feast for the senses! Fresh greens, vibrant veggies, creamy dressings, and crunchy toppings made my heart flutter with joy.

Who knew a salad could look so fun? I almost considered diving right into the lettuce myself, a salad bar designed for both humans and ducks!

Frankly, we should have stopped after the salad because that was more than enough food for any duck…. BUT the main courses were on their way.
One of my humans opted for the fish and chips, which arrived looking perfectly crispy and golden. It was served with a generous side of homemade tartar sauce. The fish was delicious and fresh, I half-expected it to start swimming right back to the sea!

My other human chose the chicken-fried steak, an absolute showstopper! Tender, juicy, and covered in rich, creamy gravy, it was served with a massive mound of fluffy mashed potatoes that practically made my eyes pop! Every bite was like a warm hug from Myrtie Mae herself.
Again, there was absolutely no reason to move on from here with more food. However, we were determined to taste Arkansas’ infamous possum pie. Now, before you get any ideas, let me clarify: there are no possums involved in this pie. The name comes from the fact that the ingredients, a rich chocolate filling and a smooth cream cheese layer, are ‘playing possum’ under a thick, decadent layer of whipped cream.

It’s a playful name for a delicious dessert, and I can assure you, no possum meat is involved. This dessert was a fabulous fusion of creamy chocolate and smooth cream cheese. Let me tell you, it was just as delightful as the legend promised! Each forkful was a sweet serenade, a perfect ending to a perfect meal. It left everyone with grins wider than the Arkansas River.

With friendly faces at the helm, a rich history breathing life into every corner, and dishes that tug at your taste buds, Myrtie Mae’s Diner is a genuine gem in Eureka Springs. If you ever find yourself in the area, do yourself a favour and stop by. Here, you’ll not only fill your belly but also soak in the warm local culture that quacks with charm.

Trust me, after a visit, you’ll leave with a satisfied belly and delightful memories that’ll make you smile for days!
