  • Pier 60 – Clearwater Bay, Florida

Pier 60 – Clearwater Bay, Florida

I’m excited to share my unforgettable day at this unique destination. A great blend of stunning sunsets, delightful entertainment, and a sprinkle of adventure.

The actual pier was a no-go zone on my visit—repair work from the hurricane season. It meant I couldn’t get my float there.  But no worries, the beach still had plenty to offer!

Waddling on the golden shore, I felt the fine grains hugging me like a cozy nest, perfect for a duck just lazing around!

I couldn’t help but squeak with delight as I watched kids enjoying the weather. They were building towering sandcastles that looked like royal duck palaces!

As the evening approached, I found a cozy spot on the sandy shore. I eagerly awaited the breathtaking transformation of the sky.

The sun gracefully descended, casting a warm golden light across the water. It turned the water into a shimmering sea of jewels.  It was a sight that inspired awe and wonder, leaving me quackless!

When I thought it couldn’t get any better, the sky erupted into a vibrant palette of purples and pinks. These colours reflected beautifully off the water’s surface.

I quacked with joy as I saw some folks embarking on sunset tours. Their boats created ripples that danced in the golden light. What a perfect way to soak in the breathtaking view!

As twilight settled in, Pier 60 came alive with a vibrant energy.  Street performers gathered, and the first stars began to twinkle overhead.  Jugglers, magicians, and dancers filled the air with laughter and excitement.  I happily bobbed along with the beat, feeling the electric energy of the crowd.

It was a celebration that perfectly complemented the beauty of the setting sun, keeping everyone entertained and excited!

My human was tired, so we did not engage in the merriment following the sunset. But there was certainly no shortage of smiles and laughter!

The pier was lined with mouthwatering food stands, filling the air with delicious aromas.  Although I may not enjoy funnel cakes or fresh seafood, I could imagine how tasty they were while watching the sun slip away behind the horizon.

In a nutshell, Pier 60 in Clearwater Bay is a must-visit for anyone who adores stunning sunsets, delightful entertainment, and a sprinkle of adventure. Whether you’re a friendly rubber duck or a human sunseeker!

With unparalleled views, playful sailboats, and a lively festival atmosphere, it’s genuinely the quackiest place to make cherished memories!

  • José Marti Park – Ybor City, Florida

José Marti Park – Ybor City, Florida

It feels as if I’ve been transported straight to Cuba. The lively atmosphere and rich culture embrace me like a warm hug.  Moreover, the park serves as a living tribute to the enduring legacy of José Marti.

It is a tribute to José Martí, a legendary Cuban poet and revolutionary who dedicated his life to Cuban independence.  As I drift by the majestic statue of Martí, I can almost feel his spirit inspiring me.

Born on January 28, 1853, in Havana, he became a prominent figure in Latin American literature. In addition, he earned a revered place in Cuban history.

Martí believed in justice, education, and cultural identity.  He sought independence and unity among different factions in the struggle against colonialism.

In 1895, he co-founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party and became a guiding force in the Cuban War of Independence.

Although he tragically lost his life in battle on May 19, 1895, his legacy continues to spark movements for freedom and social justice across Latin America.

Born on June 14, 1845, he was a fearless leader in the independence movement known for his strategic guerrilla warfare. With courage and a dream of liberty, he rallied countless souls. Many joined his fight against Spanish forces.

Maceo’s advocacy for racial equality and the abolition of slavery made him a beacon of hope for many, especially among Afro-Cubans.

One of his legendary campaigns, the “Invasion of the West” in 1895, saw him travel across Cuba. Along the way, he ignited the flames of rebellion wherever he went.

Tragically, his journey ended too soon when he fell in battle on December 7, 1896. Yet, his spirit continues to inspire generations of Cubans.

Their struggle for justice and freedom is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. This sentiment resonates even with a little rubber duck like me!

This park is more than just a grassy spot; it’s a bubbling celebration of history, culture, and community spirit!

They converged here, creating a lively, diverse family and making the area a cigar-making paradise.

Let me tell you about Perry Harvey, Sr. He wasn’t just any leader—he was a true trailblazer for dock workers.  As the president of Longshoreman’s Union Local #1402, he advocated for fair wages and better working conditions.

His hard work created a robust black middle class, opening doors to job opportunities and encouraging families to save for their future.

Perry was also instrumental in constructing the first black-owned apartment complex and plaza, a bustling business hub, including a bank and a supermarket.

A visionary in the Civil Rights movement, he fought to desegregate schools and championed educational opportunities for all children.

His dedication resulted in the formation of the Head Start Program, demonstrating how one person’s commitment can uplift an entire community.  What a ripple effect he created!

These trails wind through lush coastal habitats, offering scenic bay views at every turn.

Aquatica Water Park – Orlando, Florida

Bob, here to give you the scoop on my recent splashing adventure at Aquatica Water Park in sunny Orlando, Florida!  This water wonderland has made quite an impression on my rubbery heart.

  • The Giraffe Ranch – Dade City, Florida

The Giraffe Ranch – Dade City, Florida

Hey there, fellow water lovers!  It’s me, Bob, to tell you about my exciting trip to Giraffe Ranch in Dade City, Florida!  Get ready for a splash of wildlife fun!

Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Dade City, Giraffe Ranch is a wonderland where you can get up close and personal with some of the most majestic creatures on the planet.  Owned by a passionate husband-and-wife duo who genuinely love their furry friends, this place is like a cozy animal home and a playground for conservation enthusiasts!  It’s a unique experience that will leave you in awe.

Imagine rolling through 47 acres where habitats are specially designed to mimic the natural homes of all the fabulous animals living there.

And guess what?  It’s not just giraffes that make this place awesome!  You’ll also meet many other fascinating animals like zebras, ostriches, and all sorts of antelope, to name a few.  Each area is built to allow the animals to roam, thrive, and show off their playful personalities.

But Giraffe Ranch isn’t merely a showcase of incredible wildlife; it’s on a mission!  With a heart full of love, the ranch actively participates in breeding programs for endangered species and works with other organizations to help protect those fantastic animals in the wild.

Our tour guide, Chris, was a true animal expert!  I thought he was one of the owners because of his enthusiasm and deep knowledge.  He led us through the ranch and called many furry friends by name, sharing sweet stories about unique animals he raised by hand.  Did you know some of the residents were rescued?  That’s right!  They’re all part of a big, happy family, and the ranch is working to help some of the nearly extinct animals out in the wild.

Chris guided us through the ranch, answering all questions and imparting his knowledge of the various species.

Did you know that ostrich eggs are so durable that you can stand on them?  That is nature’s way of assuring you they won’t break when the 400-pound father helps with the incubation.

I tried sitting on an older egg, but it was a little big.  A friendly piece of duck knowledge for you – do not break open one of these eggs unless you are prepared for a week-long smelly surprise!

Another highlight came from the zebras group.  I had no idea flies won’t land on zebras because the stripes confuse their eyesight!  It makes me wish this duck was black and white.  There were two unique zebras on the ranch: a zebra whose stripes were not all stripes, some were almost like zig-zags, which Chris explained was one in a million and a zebra that was an offspring that resulted from an adventure when a donkey and a zebra went on a date creating a Donkra?  Or Zebkey?  I am not sure which, but it was interesting, to say the least.

Now, let’s get to the show’s stars—Neal and Phil, two of the fabulous giraffes!  These gentle giants stole my heart (as much as a rubber duck’s heart can be stolen).

Visiting Giraffe Ranch isn’t just another outing; it’s like a thrilling educational deep dive into wildlife conservation!  With gorgeous scenery, passionate caretakers, and the charming antics of Phil and Neal, it’s the perfect blend of adventure and learning.  You’ll leave feeling informed and enlightened about the world of wildlife conservation.

In the meantime, here are a few more pictures of new friends I made at the ranch.

So, what are you waiting for?  Don’t duck out on this adventure!  Grab your explorer hat and prepare for an experience you won’t forget!  Neal is watching for you!

  • The Ritz Theatre – Winterhaven, Florida

The Ritz Theatre – Winterhaven, Florida

Hey there, fabulous feathered friends and fellow theatre lovers!  It’s your favourite quacking companion, Bob, here to spread the word about one of Winter Haven’s brightest treasures—the dazzling Ritz Theatre!

I discovered the theatre while biking through central Florida and noticed the Blues Brothers in the windows.  I stopped and chatted with the locals to find out about this place.  This spot is where land-dwelling buddies and water-loving pals can unite in joy and laughter!

Let’s take a whimsical dive back in time, shall we?  The Ritz Theatre first swung open its doors in 1926, back when flapper dresses were flapping, and jazz music was the talk of the town.  This glamorous venue started as a silent movie house and a stage for vaudeville shenanigans, bringing together folks to indulge in the latest flicks and performances.  Picture families flocking in, eager for a night of delight and merriment!

But, oh boy, the ride wasn’t all fun and games!  As the years danced by, the Ritz faced some serious plot twists.  By the mid-20th century, shiny multiplex cinemas started popping up, and the beloved theatre began to fade into the background.  It closed its doors in the late 1970s, leaving behind a ghostly shell bedecked with creeping vines and a marquee that hardly shone anymore.

But just when you thought all was lost, a group of local heroes appeared like the best plot twist ever!  In the early 2000s, these passionate art lovers banded together, fueled by a vision to revive their treasure.  With some elbow grease and a sprinkle of enthusiasm, renovations began in 2005, marking a new chapter in the Ritz Theatre’s history and a beacon of hope for the arts in Winter Haven!

After a loving restoration that kept the historic charm while adding a dash of modern flair, the Ritz had its grand reopening in 2009—what a spectacle that must have been!  I can almost picture the townsfolk donning their snazziest attire, excitedly filling the seats and buzzing about the reimagined theatre.  Now, the Ritz has transformed into a sensational performing arts center, bursting at the seams with a diverse range of live theatre, lively concerts, and fabulous film festivals! There’s something for everyone, and it’s all here at the Ritz!

Today, the Ritz Theatre stands proudly, humming with creativity and culture in Winter Haven! It’s not just a venue, it’s the heartbeat of the community, a magical space where young and old alike can come together to revel in the joy of creativity.  Everyone’s chatting about the latest and greatest performances, eagerly counting the days until the next big event. It’s a place where everyone belongs, and where the Winter Haven community comes alive!

And let’s not forget the community shindigs and festivals that make the Ritz a true centrepiece of Winter Haven’s cultural tapestry!  Feathered friends and non-feathered folk flock here—it’s a blast sharing experiences with others, and the Ritz is the ultimate playground!

As each season glides by, the Ritz Theatre continues to weave its enchanting story.  It’s become integral to the town’s identity, offering everything from timeless classics to contemporary masterpieces.  I may be just a buoyant rubber duck, but I can feel it in my feathers—the heart of Winter Haven beats loudest at the Ritz, where history and artistry dance together in perfect harmony!

So, if you are waddling through Winter Haven, don’t even think about missing this phenomenal establishment.  The Ritz Theatre isn’t just a building; it’s a sparkling symbol of resilience, community spirit, and the arts!  Whether you’re a duck, a human, or any other incredible creature, there’s something here for everyone!

Grab your tickets, nestle into those comfy seats, and prepare for a quack-tastic time!

Quack on and enjoy the show!

Ridge Island Groves – Haines City, Florida

Today, I stumbled upon one of Florida’s most unique and captivating destinations: Ridge Island Groves!  Imagine a sunny paradise with citrus trees stretching as far as the eye can see – where you’ll find me immersed in the vibrant hues of fresh oranges and grapefruits.

This charming spot, owned and operated by the wonderful Ritch family, is a paradise for those who love to explore new flavours!  Their promise of “Fresh Florida Citrus” was evident in every corner.  As I stroll by the orchards, the sweetest Navel oranges surround me.  The aroma of these ripe fruits is so enticing that it makes me want to break into a bit of a rubber duck dance!

Step into their adorable farm store and an explosion of citrusy aromas will greet you.

The shelves are stacked with colourful jars of homemade jams and jellies that would make anyone’s taste buds leap for joy.  My faves?  The sweet orange marmalade and the tangy grapefruit jelly – are perfect for spreading on breakfast toast.

Now, let’s splash into the juicy side of things!  Ridge Island Groves has a wide range of fresh-squeezed juices that are the real deal.  From classic orange juice to a refreshing citrus medley, every gulp is like a ray of sunshine!  These juices are delicious and packed with essential nutrients and surely complete a quacking great breakfast!

Remember to grab a bag of citrus goodies on your way out—your taste buds and health will thank you.  Many choices make it challenging to narrow down, but a duck can only carry so much.

I chose a variety to stage a little taste test at home with my humans: Honeybell orange, Navel orange, Red Navel orange, Honey tangerine, white grapefruit, and pomelo.  My humans were mixed on their favourite, but everyone loved the flavour of the pomelo and ate it so fast that I did not get time to add to the picture.

But wait, the most exciting treat of all is their homemade ice cream!  Picture this: creamy scoops infused with fresh fruit flavours served as sweet summer nostalgia.  The orange creamsicle flavour?  It takes me back to sunny afternoons with my duck pals, quacking happily on the porch.  Families gather, laughter ringing in the air as each scoop brings smiles.

Let’s not overlook the exceptional staff at Ridge Island Groves!  They’re more than just employees; they’re a family, welcoming every guest with open arms and genuine joy.  Whether picking the juiciest fruits, serving delicious ice cream, or sharing the farm’s rich history, they ensure everyone feels like they belong to this unique community.

Ridge Island Groves isn’t just a farm; it’s a lively gathering place for friends, families, and, of course, rubber ducks like me!  With every season that passes, this enchanting spot continues to grow, showcasing the very best of Florida’s agricultural wonder and fostering a sense of community that makes everyone feel included and part of something special.

So head down and experience the richness of this citrus paradise—I guarantee it’ll make your heart sing and your taste buds dance!  Quack-tastic memories await!

  • Historic District – St. Augustine, Florida

Historic District – St. Augustine, Florida

Today, I embarked on a delightful adventure in the charming streets of St. Augustine, Florida!  From my cozy perch in my human backpack, I was excited to explore the oldest city in the United States.

As we arrived, I was immediately captivated by the stunning Spanish architecture surrounding us.

The historic Castillo de San Marcos, with its formidable walls and scenic views of Matanzas Bay, was a highlight!  My human even let me sit on the parapets for a photo—talk about a quack-tastic view!

Next, we waddled down the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, where I admired the quaint shops and vibrant colours of the buildings.  The smell of fresh fudge wafted through the air, and I wished I could indulge.  But what I did get to do was become a pirate!  Even if just for a quick picture.

We stumbled upon the famous Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park.  My human tossed a penny in for good luck, and I couldn’t help but wonder if a splash of water might grant me eternal youth (or at least a good scrub!).  We explored the lush gardens and even learned about the indigenous Timucua people—what a rich history!

With its rich history and charming atmosphere, St. Augustine has undoubtedly earned a spot in my rubber heart.  I can’t wait to tell all my bath-time friends about my quacking good time here!  Until next time, St. Augustine!

  • Castillo de Sans Marcos – St. Augustine, Florida

Castillo de Sans Marcos – St. Augustine, Florida

Today was splashtastic as I paddled my way to St. Augustine, Florida!  Can you believe I got to see the historic Castillo de San Marcos?  Just imagine me bobbing about on the gentle waves of the Matanzas River, gazing at that massive fortress standing proud against the bright blue sky.  Those coquina walls looked so inviting; they practically called my name!

Let me tell you, Castillo San Marcos is not just any old fort; it’s one of the most incredible national parks in the Sunshine State!  This magnificent structure was built way back in the 17th century, starting in 1672, by the clever Spanish to keep their empire safe from nosy neighbours.  They had to deal with the British, pirates, and who knows what else!

The fort has a remarkable history of resilience.  In 1702, the British attempted to attack, but to no avail.  They couldn’t breach those impenetrable walls, not even when they set the city ablaze!  This is a fort with some serious street cred!  Subsequent attacks in 1728 and 1740 were just as fruitless—those Brits must’ve been so frustrated!

After a whirlwind of history, Florida became a British colony in 1763.  This place has seen many changes; it’s like a soap opera!  During the Revolutionary War, the Castillo transformed into a military prison and held three signers of the Declaration of Independence within its walls.  Can you imagine the stories they must have shared?

I felt a bit awestruck by the impressive row of cannons and the fascinating history of weaponry that played a vital role in protecting this significant piece of land.

When Florida returned to Spain in 1784, the Castillo was renamed Fort Marion in honour of a revolutionary hero.  By 1822, Florida had permanently become under the domain of the United States, and in a heartwarming twist, it returned to its original name, Castillo de San Marcos, in 1942!

Now, let’s talk about the vibes!  The fort was buzzing with families snapping photos, and I couldn’t help but chuckle as little ones posed with their rubber duckies!  I, of course, had the best view!  Peeking through those narrow windows, I imagined the brave soldiers who once stood sentinel, watching the glimmering waters.  The ramparts offered stunning views of the coastline and sailboats gliding along, and oh, how I wished for a ride!  But alas, I’m just a duck!

This stronghold has seen over 315 years of history, and here I was—a little rubber duck soaking it all in.

When I returned to my cozy little pond, I couldn’t wait to regale my bath toy buddies with tales of my day at Castillo de San Marcos!  I might be a quacking duck, but now I’m carrying a treasure trove of history.  Quack-tastic, right?

  • Bridge of Lions – St. Augustine, Florida

Bridge of Lions – St. Augustine, Florida

Hey there, adventure seekers!  It’s Bob here, paddling through the magical waters of St. Augustine, Florida—where the past dances with the present like the waves doing the cha-cha all around me!  Today, I’m right by the iconic Bridge of Lions, this fantastic drawbridge that whisks visitors from the city’s lively streets to the sun-kissed shores of Anastasia Island, all while crossing the sparkling Matanzas Bay.

Now, let me set the scene!  Picture this: a duo of majestic marble lion statues stand guard over the bridge, looking like they’ve just stepped out of an Italian Renaissance painting!  These royal guardians, replicas of Florence’s famous Medici lions, have been watching since the bridge opened its doors in 1927.  They’ve had their share of adventures, too—after a bit of a makeover and some relocation drama, they roared back to their posts in March 2011, ready to oversee one of the most picturesque spots in the nation’s oldest city, famously known as “The Most Beautiful Bridge in Dixie.” Talk about a lion’s share of the glory!

What I love most about this bridge is how it fuses beauty and functions like a finely tuned ukulele.  It’s a hotspot for duck-hoppers like me, with lush palm trees, charming gazebos, and a cool new dock extending into the bay, perfect for catching a sunset or just soaking up the vibes.  And here’s the kicker—every hour and half hour, from 7 AM to 6 PM, the bridge raises its arms in a grand theatrical display for passing boats.  Just picture it—a pirate ship gliding through as the lions look on with their stoic gaze!

Speaking of pirates, I had a moment of panic when I saw one coming through!  My little heart raced and I nearly quacked my pants, thinking, “Oh no!  The pirates are taking over!” But fear not!  The Black Raven is a pirate ship designed for live performances.  Phew!  I dodged a close one there.

As I drift along, the air is filled with laughter and the magical sounds of storytelling.  Families come together, sharing moments as precious as gold, all while surrounded by the charm of this historic site.  There’s something heartwarming about the way people connect here, turning the Bridge of Lions into not just a crossing but a symbol of unity echoing the rich heritage of St. Augustine.

As the sun dips low, painting the sky in glorious shades of gold and rose, I can’t help but feel thankful.  This isn’t just a stunning bridge; it’s a treasured icon of St. Augustine, woven into the vibrant tapestry of the city’s story.  I feel beyond lucky to soak it all in!

Hey there, fellow adventurers!  Bobber Duck here, floating your way from Fernandina Beach, Florida, where I’ve just paddled past the magnificent Fort Clinch!  This historic gem is perched on the island’s North End, and let me tell you, it’s a quacker of a place!

Imagine this: a pre-Civil War fortress, built in the 19th century, standing tall and proud amidst 1121 acres of breathtaking nature.  With sandy beaches stretching over a mile, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing day in the sun, with eagles and ospreys soaring above.  Keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife.

Now, what’s remarkable is the backstory of this fort.  It all began in 1736 when the first fortifications were set down, but the real magic happened in 1847 when construction on Fort Clinch kicked off.  It was like a giant sandcastle, but made of stone and brick!  Sadly, the fort wasn’t finished when the Civil War rolled around, and they hadn’t even put cannons in place.  Just imagine—a fort ready for action but still a little shy!

Fast forward to 1898, when the Spanish-American War turned Fort Clinch into a bustling barracks and ammo depot.  With some fortifications added, it was all hands on deck!  But wouldn’t you know it, the action fizzled out, and poor ol’ Fort Clinch was left cooling its heels (or walls) once again.

But that’s not all!  In 1935, some visionary individuals recognized the significance of this place and transformed it into one of Florida’s first state parks.  Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, the fort received a much-needed makeover, preserving its historical charm for future generations to enjoy!

Today, it’s a delightful place for visitors to explore.  From bastions and guard rooms to kitchens and a blacksmith shop, every nook and cranny of this fort echoes with history.  The fort has been meticulously restored, with period furnishings and interactive exhibits that bring the past to life.  And the best part?  Friendly volunteers and rangers are ready to share all the juicy tales of bravery and battles within these walls!

I couldn’t resist paddling over to dive into the dazzling world of America’s favourite sports car!

A lucky new owner was picking up their sparkling blue ride right in the museum, not at the factory across the street.

Everyone gathered around, clapping and cheering as the thrilled owner cruised off in their shiny pride and joy.

Corvettes galore glimmer like jewels from every decade!

On The Way – Bowling Green, Kentucky National Corvette Museum

This beauty didn’t make it to the production line. Perhaps its tail was too long or its nose too pointy!

This quirky gem influenced the striking 1968 Corvette.  If you squint just right, you might see some family resemblance between us: both champions of individuality!

After spending time at the Corvette Museum, I have to agree!

If you’re a car lover, a history buff, or love unique attractions, the National Corvette Museum is an absolute must-see!

Speedworld Indoor Kart Track – Winnipeg, Manitoba

With frosty air and snow piled high, I spend most days snuggled up indoors.

But today I’m revved up and ready at the legendary Speed World – where the rubber meets the track, and the excitement is off the charts!

It all began with my buddy Rick and his adrenaline-hungry motorcycle pals.

When the snow blankets the roads, they crank up the fun with meet-ups, sparking camaraderie and keeping the excitement brewing until spring.

Speed World is the ultimate playground for speed demons!

Since opening its doors in 2004, it has become an electrifying hub for go-kart enthusiasts and thrill-seekers.

The place is alive with energy, hosting everything from heart-pounding races to high-stakes league events.

In addition, they even have futuristic simulated racing with their cutting-edge Simul8Racing platform!

The atmosphere crackled with electric energy as the smell of gasoline and popcorn filled the air.

Our motorcycle crew was mingling, ready to trade their bikes for go-karts.

The symphony of revving engines, squealing tires, and jubilant laughter surrounded me as the riders suited up.

In fact, they were transforming into fierce competitors.  I was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement!

The first race was about to launch, and I was lined up, ready to zoom alongside Rick.  But – oh no!

I discovered I didn’t meet the height requirements.  WHAT?!  My rubbery little dreams of racing had to take a backseat.

But I wasn’t going to let that dampen my spirits!  I cheered like a wild fan on the sidelines.

I was squeaking my quacks for Rick as he steered toward the front like a champion!

He may not have snagged a victory this time, but the thrill of the chase made him feel like a winner!

The air was thick with giggles, high-fives, and tales of glory as we shared our most thrilling moments.  Even with the icy grip of winter outside, the warmth of friendship lit up Speed World.

  • St. Bonafice Neighbourhood – Winnipeg, Manitoba

St. Bonafice Neighbourhood – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Did you know that long before Winnipeg became the winter playground we cherish today, Indigenous peoples lived on this land along the beautiful Red River?

Fast-forward to the early 1800s. At that time, French settlers arrived, seeking adventure and delicious pastries!

Although the site has been home to missions for over 200 years, the iconic structure was built in 1908.

The magnificent façade still stands despite a catastrophic fire in 1968.

It is a symbol of the St. Boniface community’s resilience.

Meanwhile, a new cathedral has been erected immediately behind

Just outside the cathedral lies the burial site of Louis Riel, a key figure in Manitoba’s history. Once viewed as controversial, he is now celebrated for his contributions, remembered every year during a provincial holiday. His legacy is a testament to Manitoba’s rich and complex history.

A postmodern marvel designed by Étienne Gaboury in 1968.  Its unique shape, resembling a tipi, is a striking and fabulous addition to the St. Boniface skyline!

There, a beautiful trail stretches across from the Historic Forks.

During winter, the river transforms into a robust playground, allowing families to skate and stroll along the scenic path.

My rubber heart swelled with joy seeing the community embrace the winter magic of St. Boniface!

The Historic Forks – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Can you imagine?  Dancing beneath a canopy of twinkling lights!  My skating skills are limited, but that didn’t stop me from cheering on as humans twirled and laughed around me.

Sadly, my human pals deemed the ice too thin for our expedition.  This gorgeous stretch hugs the frozen rivers. It offers views that would dazzle even the grumpiest of ducks.  Perfect for those brisk winter strolls!

    Historical Forks Winnipeg, Manitoba

Inside, you’ll find boutiques, eateries, and cozy cafes, all buzzing with happy vibes.  I floated about, marvelling at the mix of old and new architecture. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the scents of cocoa and goodies from nearby vendors.

Speaking of which, the Children’s Museum!  It’s a land of playful wonders and interactive exhibits, but my visit was on Christmas Day. The doors were locked tight.  You win some, you lose some, right?  I consoled myself with the delightful sights outside.

If you’re looking for a cozy after-adventure spot, check out The Inn at The Forks – a luxurious oasis among the excitement.  Slip into relaxation mode after all the frosty fun!

  • Esplanade Riel Bridge – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Esplanade Riel Bridge – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Let me tell you, even with the clouds overhead, a balmy -1°C felt downright cozy. It was perfect for a bit of holiday adventure!

My adventure began in the charming St. Boniface area, where I floated downtown via the Provencher Bridge.

This pedestrian delight opened just a few months after Provencher, and let me tell you, it’s a swaying paradise.  I waddled along the suspended walkway, far from the honking cars and smoky fumes. In this space, I was revelling in the rich cultural vibes of Winnipeg.

The bridge was designed to unite Winnipeg’s Anglo and Franco communities, with its name paying homage to Louis Riel, the Métis co-founder of Manitoba.

In July 2005, The Salisbury House decided to dive in and turn it into a culinary hotspot.  Summer came, and foot traffic was as lively as a duck pond on a sunny day.

Once winter rolled in, the guests slipped away faster than I could quack.

By 2008, they decided to go seasonal.

By 2013, they floated off the bridge but remain a Manitoba icon throughout the city.

Chez Sophie sur le Pont tried in 2013 but folded by 2015.

Mon Ami Louis opened in July 2015, only to close its doors in 2020.  The restaurant on a bridge dream seems more burdensome to pull off than expected!

It’s a fabulous hangout spot for walkers and a paradise for photographers.  I mean, come on!  It offers breathtaking views of the river, the historic Forks, and the impressive Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

I watched the icy wind tussle my feathers and saw how a few hardy folks braved the weather.

I plan to return when the summer sun shines bright, bringing more folks down to the Esplanade Riel Bridge.

The souvenir kiosks will buzz with energy, and the bridge will be alive with laughter and joy.

  • Minuteman Missile Site – Cooperstown, North Dakota

Minuteman Missile Site – Cooperstown, North Dakota

Today, I am wading into the tales of history with my trusty human companions at the legendary Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Silos.

I was travelling with brave U.S. military veterans near Cooperstown, North Dakota, who made the visit even more meaningful.

The air was thick with curiosity, and I quacked in excitement as the stories began to unfold around me.

The Minuteman missiles, capable of being launched within minutes, were deeply buried beneath the surface. Hidden from sight and fortified to withstand a first strike.

The silos themselves were a marvel of engineering. Hardened concrete structures that housed the missiles ensured they remained safe and operational even in the direst of circumstances.

A pair of Air Force officers would be stationed in a command capsule, constantly on alert. Ready to respond at a moment’s notice. Just imagining all that technology beneath my little duck flippers sent shivers of awe through me!

Each missile silo was equipped with multiple safety measures to prevent unauthorized access. I must say, it was a little ominous but entirely necessary.

As history marched onward, the presence of these missile silos came to symbolize the shifting tides of global relations.

With the Cold War extending into the late 1980s, there was a sense of urgency, yet also a growing desire for peace.

In 1983, the Reagan administration chose to modernize the nuclear arsenal and missile systems.

Ironically, the very name “Reagan” set a new tone for discussions around nuclear arms, pushing nations towards disarmament rather than conflict.

While some silos were dismantled, others remain as poignant reminders of the past, standing like silent sentinels over the flat North Dakota landscape.

It was intriguing, yet a little eerie, to think about the fortifications and the measures put in place to protect the nation that existed right there in the heart of the Midwest.

I quacked in appreciation for the military veterans in our group, recognizing their contributions and the complex legacy of the very sites we visited.

So there I was, a humble rubber duck, floating alongside proud defenders of freedom.

Soaking up the stories of the Ronald Reagan Missileman Silos—truly a fascinating chapter in the ever-evolving tale of national security!

  • Birthplace of Captain Kirk – Riverside, Iowa

Birthplace of Captain Kirk – Riverside, Iowa

Hello there! Today I am reminiscing about bobbing along the delightful English River, imagining myself as Captain Kirk on a starship-like adventure!

You wouldn’t believe the wild tales I’ve encountered. Especially the one about Riverside, Iowa—a tiny town with dreams a-plenty. Not the least of which is shouting from the rooftops that it’s the future birthplace of none other than the iconic Captain Kirk!

Let me take you back to 1985. At that time, Steve Miller, who just so happens was a City Council member and a hardcore Star Trek fan, decided to “Boldly go where no man had gone before”.

Inspired by Gene Roddenberry’s legendary book, The Making of Star Trek, where Roddenberry reveals that James Tiberius Kirk is supposedly born in Iowa. Steve thought,

And guess what? His bold proposal passed through the City Council like a shuttlecraft through space! Talk about cosmic destiny! Indeed, one can say the spirit of Captain Kirk inspired him.

Riverside’s Kirk connection got a dazzling boost when, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, our fearless captain confirmed he hails from this very town!

To commemorate this epic story, Riverside erected a fabulous monument that boldly proclaims,

Fun fact: the plaque says Kirk popped into the universe on March 22, 2228—making it even more special because that’s also the birthday of the legendary actor, William Shatner! Now that’s what I call a cosmic coincidence!

Now, let me tell you about the cherry on top—The Voyage Home Riverside History Center, which locals affectionately call the “Star Trek Museum.”

It’s a haven filled to the brim with Star Trek-themed exhibits, including a time capsule and a Star Trek bathroom (yes, you heard that right!). There is also an awesome tribute to the fascinating women of Star Trek.

Imagine this: when it opened on June 27, 2008, the original Chekov himself, Walter Koenig, floated in to cut the ribbon! It was a momentous day for fans of Captain Kirk.

The center beautifully merges Riverside’s past with its spirited connection to the Star Trek universe. It showcases memorabilia, NASA displays, and even a tribute to William Shatner’s visit. Wowza!

Oh boy, oh boy—it’s like a universal party where Trekkies gather to revel in the magic of Star Trek! There’s parading and trivia games that really put your knowledge to the test. An irresistible charm fills the air as everyone gets decked out as their favourite characters.

You’ll find folks like Spock, Uhura, and even Klingons waddling around—nothing beats a gathering like this!

So here I float, soaking up the sun and the laughter, marvelling at the creativity and enthusiasm radiating from both locals and visitors. Much like Captain Kirk would have appreciated.

With each wave and ripple, I can’t help but quack with joy at the vibrant tapestry of history, fun, and community.

Who knew being a rubber duck could lead me on such a stellar adventure?
