Magnolia Soup Company – Sturgis, South Dakota

We were passing through Sturgis on our way back from Arizona.

With the infamous motorcycle rally months away, the town was blissfully quiet, making it a perfect time to explore all the hidden gems Sturgis has to offer.

Now, you might think a place called Magnolia Soup Company would be about soup, but hold onto your feathers because they have a whole lot more to offer!

The menu is bursting with delicious options, everything from hearty soups and fresh salads to tantalizing rice bowls and mouthwatering sandwiches.

And, of course, there is a never-ending selection of daily specials on the menu.

There’s even a delightful selection of wines for those looking to add a little cheer to their meal.

It felt like a one-stop shop for anyone hungry for a taste of local flavour!

Our server was the friendliest lady, who used to own a local taco shop, so she certainly knew how to make us feel welcome.

Locals were chatting and laughing, creating a warm and welcoming vibe that made it feel like we were part of something special.

Do yourself a favour and swing by the Magnolia Soup Company whenever you are in Sturgis.

Black Hills Bagels – Rapid City, South Dakota

While spending time in the Sturgis area, my humans were determined to make the drive to Black Hills Bagels.

My humans couldn’t resist the “birthday cake” tea, which turned out to be a delightful Earl Grey.

In fact, the love for this brew was so strong that one of them snagged a bag to take home.

    Now that’s what I call a win-win!

They are like a well-oiled bagel-making machine, always there to assist with a friendly face and helpful attitude.

They took the time to explain menu choices, helping my humans land on the perfect choices for them.

Even though they were quite busy with many order pickup customers and in-store patrons, they made us feel that our satisfaction was very important to them.

I got to see the entire bagel-making process, from kneading the dough to those aromatic circles of goodness baking in the oven.

For all you BOBBERS out there…when you are near Rapid City, South Dakota, make sure you stop by Black Hills Bagels.

Rosie’s Café- Sioux Falls, South Dakota

In a search for local breakfast spots, Rosie’s Café popped up at the top of the list, boasting the holy grail of Home Cookin’.

Rosie’s Café is a tad off the interstate, but it was well worth the extra 10 minutes!

She chuckled and explained that the original Rosie had run the café for nearly 40 years but had to move closer to her daughter for health reasons.

A feast so grand it takes two plates!

Think eggs, sausages, breakfast potatoes, biscuits swimming in gravy, and a tower of fluffy pancakes on the side.

It was delicious, and he certainly did not leave hungry!

    • Perfectly baked cheddar-and-rosemary biscuit,
    • Freshly shredded hash browns,
    • Thick-cut bacon
    • Toasted croissant loaf.

Exactly how it sounds, croissants pressed into a loaf, sliced and toasted.

With a steaming cup of tea tucked beside her, it was the perfect way to kick off the day.

Everyone from the welcoming ladies to the chefs shaping the delicious magic in the kitchen, and even the owners themselves, was on hand to make us feel like lifelong regulars.

Their care and attention lit up our breakfast experience, leaving my humans grinning from ear to ear.

My photo now proudly hangs in Rosie’s Café, proving that even a rubber duck can be part of breakfast history!

And my humans had some fun with a quirky ashtray!

  • Saloon 10 – Deadwood, South Dakota

Saloon 10 – Deadwood, South Dakota

Now, let’s splash around in the juicy backstory! Saloon No. 10 was born in the roaring 1930s. Its creation was thanks to a fellow named Stu Donavitz, who knew how to play the speakeasy game like a pro.

But what really makes this saloon sparkle is the teamwork between Stu and a creative cartoonist from Chicago, Elmer Kellogg. Inspired by the legendary Wild Bill, these two crafted a unique slice of the past. They included handcrafted doors and cozy barstools!

Zoom forward to December 1963, when the Keehn family took over this historical joint. Without needing a time machine, it’s clear that the Keehn family has been pouring their heart and soul into Saloon No. 10. For four generations, family members hustle every day to keep the good vibes flowing, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their dedication.

Live music fills the air with fantastic tunes, courtesy of local legends like Vern Sympsy. I even caught an impromptu jam with Good Ol’ Keehn Dad on the “gut bucket.”

Plus, there are unforgettable grill sessions by the fireplace, where friends and strangers bond over sizzling steaks. Nothing like that camaraderie to make a rubber duck feel right at home!

When the fabulous 1980s rolled in, the Keehn family had an epiphany: why not add food to the fun? Enter Aunt Sally’s Fried Chicken! They whipped up a drool-worthy menu that hooked patrons faster than I can do a backstroke!

This culinary adventure led to the birth of the Deadwood Social Club in 1995. They broadened their tasty horizons while keeping that iconic Saloon No. 10 spirit alive.

And there’s more! The Keehn family is all about community. They’ve turned fundraising into a lively tradition, mixing a little quirky fun with heartfelt purpose, like their weekly Sexy Bingo, where every cent goes toward fighting cancer!

Their guiding mantras, such as “Keep the faith” and “Life is short,” float through the saloon. They remind everyone that laughter is the best medicine!

So, if you find yourself anywhere near Deadwood, make the hasty float over to experience Saloon No. 10. It’s a place that embodies the vibrant history of the Wild West while serving up heartfelt hospitality.

With a family that keeps the spirit of togetherness alive, it’s where legends come to life. Memories are made one clink of the glass at a time!
