Waffle House – Key Largo and Sarasota, Florida

As BOB the rubber duck, I’ve had my share of adventures, but one of the most memorable was when my humans decided to take a road trip through the sunny Florida Keys.

One morning, we got an early start to head from Florida City to Key West.

My humans were getting a bit grumpy due to hunger, and the rain had started to sprinkle down.

That’s when they spotted a Waffle House in Key Largo!

Now, I’ve heard whispers in the bubble bath about Waffle House being a magical place with incredible breakfasts, so I was thrilled for my first visit!

As we waddled in, we were greeted by the warm aroma of coffee and sizzling food.

My humans settled in, and I perched proudly on the table, ready for the feast to begin.

First came the piping hot coffee and tea to warm our souls.

Then fluffy, golden, and oh-so-delicious waffles, my human couldn’t stop raving about them. The sausages made the perfect sidekick, adding a delightful crunch to the meal.

Meanwhile, my other human was enjoying a BLT sandwich stuffed with crispy bacon that seemed to sizzle with joy. With the sides of hash browns and mushrooms, a true breakfast treat!

But the real highlight? The staff at Waffle House!

They were like a family, buzzing around with huge smiles and an infectious energy that made everyone feel right at home.

Their friendliness and teamwork were something special; it was a joy to watch them serve with such enthusiasm!

With our bellies full and hearts happy, we left with a glimmering positive image of this franchise, feeling as if we were part of their warm and welcoming family.

Fast forward two weeks, and the journey carried us from Fort Myers, Florida, all the way to Ontario, Canada.

After an hour on the road, my humans were on the lookout for another breakfast stop. Lo and behold, another Waffle House sign appeared!

The excitement bubbled up inside me!

We followed the signs to the Sarasota location, eager for round two.

The place was buzzing with activity!

It was clear this crew knew how to get things done.

Customers were greeted warmly, many by name – talk about impressive!

The staff was synchronized like a well-oiled machine, and I couldn’t help but bob along as they shouted orders and expertly delivered meals at warp speed.

Just like at the Key Largo location, the food was fantastic, and the experience was even better.

My humans and I felt right at home, soaking in the lively atmosphere.

Once again, leaving with smiles on our faces, ready for more Waffle House adventures on future travels.

Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Bob here, ready to share the exciting story of the Cape Florida Lighthouse, tucked away in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.

From my cozy spot bobbing in the waves, I’ve discovered the towering lighthouse’s fascinating journey through history, and it’s a tale filled with adventure!

The Cape Florida Lighthouse, completed in 1825, is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County.

It’s a testament to resilience, having weathered countless storms and illuminated myriad journeys.

Imagine the sight of ships sailing through the shimmering waters of Biscayne Bay, guided safely home by the warm glow of this iconic beacon!

In 1860, the lighthouse underwent a remarkable transformation, rising to a towering 95 feet and adorned with a new brick facade and a shiny Fresnel lens, making its light visible from miles away.

Throughout the years, the lighthouse faced the wear and tear of both nature and time, leading to periods of neglect.

However, some dedicated folks stepped in during the 1970s to restore this historical gem, ensuring it could continue shining brightly for generations.

The restoration did not stop there.

The final restoration was completed in 1996, bringing the structure as close to the 1855 standards as possible.

Today, it’s a stunning sight within the state park, drawing visitors eager to walk in the footsteps of history.

Can you picture the keeper climbing the narrow, winding stairs to light the lantern each night?

The astute lighthouse attendant caught me trying to sneak in…

…noticing that I did not meet the height requirement.

No climbing for me!

However, the wonderful man did allow me to peek inside to look up the stairs and imagine the keepers climb.

Adjacent to the lighthouse is the charming cottage of the lighthouse keeper.

This quaint building is a treasure trove of stories, preserving the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to keeping the lighthouse aglow.

The keeper likely shared unbelievable stories over dinner with friends who would occasionally make the arduous journey to visit!

Just imagine them gathered around in the cozy keeper’s cottage, sharing laughter and tales of the sea while the delicious smells wafted through the air.

You can also realize the moments of solitude as the keeper and his family sat around the fire playing games and crafting before retiring in the evenings.

And, let’s not forget the most essential building near the cottage!

Even lighthouse keepers need a place to read the newspaper!

Today, families and adventurers flock to the Cape Florida Lighthouse, marveling at the picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean.

They joyfully climb the narrow stairs of the lighthouse, feeling the thrill of reaching the top!

It is well worth the detour when exploring Southern Florida to visit the Cape Florida Lighthouse.

A true beacon of history, hope, and adventure.

Willie T’s Bar – Key West, Florida

Today I am writing about my visit to Key West, Florida, where the sunshine is warm, the streets are colourful, and humans are having a blast!

One of the most memorable stops on my adventure is Willie T’s, a lively open-air bar on Duval Street.

Known for live music, cold drinks, and walls covered with signed dollar bills, Willie T’s is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors.

From the moment I arrived, guitars were strumming, glasses were clinking, and there was a hum from people swapping stories.

It is the kind of place where everyone seemed ready to relax, sing along, and enjoy Key West’s easygoing atmosphere.

Of course, I immediately noticed the dollar bills.

Visitors sign and decorate the bills before adding them to the collection.

What a colourful display of names, messages, and memories from around the world!

I settled into the lively scene, surrounded by tourists and locals.

I overheard chatter about fishing trips, sunset cruises, and the famous green flash that can sometimes appear just after the sun slips below the horizon.

Nearby, colourful tropical drinks added to the island mood.

The Rum Runner, traditionally made with rum, fruit flavours, and grenadine, looked especially festive.

Before I knew it, it was time to continue our Key West expedition.

One day, I hope to return to Willie T’s, enjoy more live music, and leave my own dollar-bill message among the thousands already decorating the bar.

Until then, I will remember the sunshine, the music, and the friendly crowd at Willie T’s.

Davenport Diner – Davenport, Florida

Bob is reporting live from the fabulous Davenport Diner.

As a duck who knows something about comfort and coziness, I decided to waddle over and check out Davenport Diner.

Spoiler alert: Amazing!

First off, let’s talk about the decor.

Waddling through the door, I am greeted by a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like a big hug.

The walls are adorned with heartfelt tributes to the military.

A feature wall of photos and memorabilia that genuinely honour those who have served.

It’s a unique touch, adding a sense of respect and patriotism that warms even my rubbery heart.

The diner perfectly balances nostalgia and comfort, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal.

Now, let’s talk about the service.

Angie’s friendly demeanour and quick service create a special dining experience.

She knows how to make a rubber duck feel at home, and her exceptional service is a testament to the diner’s commitment to customer satisfaction.

Bring on the food!

One of my humans dug into the biscuits, gravy, eggs, and sausage links. Oh boy!

Light and fluffy biscuits, rich and savoury gravy, eggs, a perfect over easy, and finished off with juicy and flavourful sausage links.

Certainly a breakfast of champions!

My other human fancied the French toast with hash browns.

The French toast was golden-brown, thick, and fluffy with a drizzle of syrup finishing it off. The hash browns were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and seasoned just right!

My humans had to waddle home after this meal!

A special shout-out goes to Betsy, the lovely lady who recommended this gem of a diner to me.

Thanks to Betsy, I will not soon forget my delightful dining experience.

I’m genuinely grateful for her recommendation.

Davenport Diner definitely earns a top-notch rating for its charming decor, delicious dishes, and Angie’s noteworthy service.

We returned the next day and learned that the locals know how great it is, too!

This place is bursting with a rich cultural tapestry and a lively arts scene.

With its warm, sunny weather, Ybor City is a perfect cultural and historical adventure destination.

Let me take you back to 1885, when Vicente Martinez-Ybor, a cigar enthusiast, decided to create a haven for cigar makers.

Picture a bustling community filled with immigrants from Cuba, Spain, and Italy, all working tirelessly to produce millions of cigars.

The air was thick with the smell of tobacco and the sounds of laughter, music, and dance.

But as the cigar industry began to wane in the mid-20th century, our beloved Ybor City fell on hard times.

Founded in 1999 by the dynamic duo Paul Teutul Sr. and his creative whiz son, Paul Jr.

Watching them build custom bikes while navigating family antics is as thrilling as a joyride down the coast!

AT OCC Roadhouse, you’ll find a kaleidoscope of memorabilia and the legendary bikes that have graced the OCC family.

Oh, how my little rubber heart races as I float around the polished showroom! These bikes are not merely machines; they’re rolling works of art!

Today, I’m diving into the delightful and vibrant experience of the Columbia Restaurant, a dazzling gem nestled in the heart of Ybor City.

This restaurant is a culinary landmark serving smiles and savoury delights since 1905!

What makes it even more remarkable is that it’s still in the loving hands of the fourth generation of the Hernandez family!

Picture a sprawling 52,000 square feet of enchanting dining space where you can cozy up with 1,700 fellow food lovers.

Break out the confetti because Columbia holds the title of Florida’s longest-standing restaurant: a true testament to dedication and community!

Walking into the Columbia is like stepping into a vibrant time machine.

The restaurant drips with culture and charm, celebrated for its stunning tile work and lively decor that whisper stories of a rich Cuban and Spanish heritage.

You can almost hear the echoes of the past as you stroll through its bustling halls!

Let’s chat about the incredible staff, especially the superstar Aaron!

His service was smooth, like a gentle stream, and his menu knowledge was impressive.

He made sure my visit was an unforgettable experience!

My journey began with a sizeable slice of Cuban bread.

Wow, was that a treat!

And then came the legendary 1905 Salad: if you think salads are boring, think again!

This salad is a legendary blend of fresh iceberg lettuce, zesty dressing, and flavorful olives, crafting a perfect harmony of taste and texture.

It has stood the test of time, remaining a beloved classic since day one!

For the main event, the management team recommended the lobster cannelloni; let me tell you, it was pure magic on a plate!

These tender cannelloni were filled with succulent lobster and drizzled with a rich sauce that danced playfully on my taste buds.

Absolute bliss!

If comfort food calls your name, the Pollo Manchego is your answer.

Juicy, perfectly seasoned chicken topped with luscious melted Manchego cheese is like receiving a warm hug from the inside out!

Satisfying and utterly delightful.

Aaron expertly guided me through the wine selection, helping me choose the Purgatori Red Blend Wine.

This full-bodied blend is an absolute must-try for wine enthusiasts! Bursting with bold, dark-fruit flavours, it perfectly complemented my food choices.

To wrap up my fantastic meal, I was treated to a lively Flamenco show right in the heart of the restaurant.

The dancers were a whirlwind of energy and elegance, their vibrant costumes lighting up the room with every twirl and stomp.

I may have no feet to dance with as a rubber duck, but you best believe I couldn’t resist bobbing along to the infectious rhythm!

Pier 60 – Clearwater Bay, Florida

Get ready for a one-of-a-kind adventure at the enchanting Pier 60 in Clearwater Bay, Florida!

I’m excited to share my unforgettable day at this unique destination. A great blend of stunning sunsets, delightful entertainment, and a sprinkle of adventure.

The beach stretches for miles, sunbathers soaking up those glorious rays while families laugh and play.

The actual pier was a no-go zone on my visit—repair work from the hurricane season. It meant I couldn’t get my float there. But no worries, the beach still had plenty to offer!

The sand here is like a fluffy cloud under my little webbed feet!

Waddling on the golden shore, I felt the fine grains hugging me like a cozy nest, perfect for a duck just lazing around!

I couldn’t help but squeak with delight as I watched kids enjoying the weather. They were building towering sandcastles that looked like royal duck palaces!

And guess what? The beach is as clean as a whistle! I paddled about, proud to splash around in such a pristine paradise!

As the evening approached, I found a cozy spot on the sandy shore. I eagerly awaited the breathtaking transformation of the sky.

The sun gracefully descended, casting a warm golden light across the water. It turned the water into a shimmering sea of jewels. It was a sight that inspired awe and wonder, leaving me quackless!

The sunsets at Pier 60 beach are the absolute star of the show!

When I thought it couldn’t get any better, the sky erupted into a vibrant palette of purples and pinks. These colours reflected beautifully off the water’s surface.

It felt like I was witnessing nature’s fireworks display, and I couldn’t contain my excitement!

I quacked with joy as I saw some folks embarking on sunset tours. Their boats created ripples that danced in the golden light. What a perfect way to soak in the breathtaking view!

But the magic didn’t end with the sunset.

As twilight settled in, Pier 60 came alive with a vibrant energy. Street performers gathered, and the first stars began to twinkle overhead. Jugglers, magicians, and dancers filled the air with laughter and excitement. I happily bobbed along with the beat, feeling the electric energy of the crowd.

It was a celebration that perfectly complemented the beauty of the setting sun, keeping everyone entertained and excited!

My human was tired, so we did not engage in the merriment following the sunset. But there was certainly no shortage of smiles and laughter!

What makes this park unique to me is its profound cultural significance.

It is a tribute to José Martí, a legendary Cuban poet and revolutionary who dedicated his life to Cuban independence. As I drift by the majestic statue of Martí, I can almost feel his spirit inspiring me.

The unique Manatee Viewing Center in sunny Tampa Bay, Florida, is dedicated to the gentle giants of the ocean, the manatees!

They gather in the waters, and you could have the unique opportunity to witness their underwater ballet from the front row!

Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, the weather was too hot for the manatees to come out and play.

Manatees are not all you can see…not even close.

There are many fish species and, of course, air-borne feathered friends.

The expansive center boasts a network of trails perfect for a stroll.

These trails wind through lush coastal habitats, offering scenic bay views at every turn.

They are ideal for a duck like me to float around on, but also super easy for everyone to explore, whether you’re a curious kid or a wise grandparent.

Now, let’s quack about the educational center!

This place is a treasure trove of fun facts about my big, blubbery buddies.

With interactive exhibits and colourful displays, it’s like a splash party with knowledge!

The always smiling, knowledgeable staff lead guided tours that make learning a blast.

I even spotted some tasty treats for the sweet-toothed, like refreshing fruity popsicles—perfect for cooling down after a day of splashing!

There are also options like “Banana Beach Cookout” and “Waterstone Grill,” offering everything from burgers to salads.

I chose street tacos with a side of Mexican rice and a pickle for extra zing. YUM!

The main attraction, of course, is the rides!

Aquatica is home to some thrilling attractions, and I couldn’t resist hopping on a few! The “Walhalla Wave” is an absolute must-try. It’s an exhilarating and unique waterslide you maneuver in a tube. Not only do you waddle your way up through six stories of waves but you also experience a zero gravity wall!

For those seeking a more leisurely float, the “Lazy River” provides the perfect opportunity to relax and soak up the sun. I took my time drifting along, letting the gentle current carry me through lush landscapes and past beautiful waterfalls. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of gliding through crystal-clear water!

Let’s not forget the “Riptide Race,” where I witnessed some serious competitive spirit among the riders. Racing down the slide, the excitement was palpable, and I couldn’t help but cheer on my fellow water adventurers from my cozy spot by the pool!

Let me take you on a culinary journey to Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill in Clearwater Beach.

A unique beachside paradise where the sun, sand, and flavours come together in a symphony of delight.

As soon as I waddled in, I was greeted with a view that could make any duck’s heart flutter, a stunning beach before my eyes!

The warm sunshine felt terrific, and the sand tickled my webbed feet as we ate. Talk about dining al fresco!

We started our feast with the legendary key lime margarita and a tropical mango margarita.

Quack-tastic! WIth just the right amount of zing, tart and refreshing, as if sipping on sunshine itself.

Meanwhile, the mango margarita was like a mini vacation for my taste buds, bursting with sweet goodness that made me feel like I was floating on a cloud!

We coupled our drinks with a logo-inspired soft pretzel that tasted as great as it looked!

Our chosen main dishes were fantastic!

The Cajun Mahi Mahi dinner was a burst of flavour, perfectly seasoned with Cajun spices. The fresh veggies and fluffy rice were the perfect partners in this culinary journey. It was a taste sensation that will leave you craving for more!

Then came the garlic pasta with shrimp. Oh, my plucky little duck feet. The shrimp were succulent, and the garlic sauce was so dreamy that I could honestly say I was floating on clouds of happiness! It paired well with the sandy beach vibes, like a match made in foodie paradise.

But hold your feathers, there’s more! I couldn’t resist trying the burger platter, which was a juicy masterpiece. With all those fresh toppings, each bite was like a festival of flavours dancing on my taste buds. If I could clap my flippers, I would!

What a great experience I had at Boggy Creek Adventures in Kissimmee, Florida.

As a seasoned adventurer (and a duck with a taste for fun), I waddled through an unforgettable day filled with excitement, exploration, and a few tasty bites!

My adventure kicked off with gem mining!

There’s nothing like splashing around in the water while searching for shiny treasures.

The staff provided us with a bucket of dirt and rocks, and with a bit of elbow grease, my cousins and I uncovered some dazzling gems!

It was a feast for the eyes, from sparkling quartz to shimmering garnets.

I even found a few pieces I proudly displayed on my nest at the pond.

This activity is a must for any feathered friends or kids looking to channel their inner treasure hunters!

Next, I flapped to the butterfly garden, where I enjoyed feeding the most beautiful butterflies.

With colourful wings fluttering around, I felt like I was in a magical world!

I discovered the theatre while biking through central Florida and noticed the Blues Brothers in the windows.

The Ritz Theatre swung open its doors in 1926, when flapper dresses were flapping, and jazz music was the talk of the town.

This glamorous venue began as a silent movie house and a stage for vaudeville shenanigans, bringing folks together to indulge in the latest flicks and performances.

Picture families flocking in, eager for a night of delight and merriment!

But, oh boy, the ride wasn’t all fun and games!

By the mid-20th century, shiny multiplex cinemas started popping up, and the beloved theatre began to fade into the background.

It closed its doors in the late 1970s, leaving behind a ghostly shell bedecked with creeping vines and a marquee that hardly shone anymore.

But just when you thought all was lost, a group of local heroes appeared like the best plot twist ever!

In the early 2000s, these passionate art lovers banded together, fueled by a vision to revive their treasure.

With some elbow grease and a sprinkle of enthusiasm, renovations began in 2005, marking a new chapter in the Ritz Theatre’s history!

After a loving restoration the Ritz had its grand reopening in 2009!

I can almost picture the townsfolk donning their snazziest attire, excitedly filling the seats and buzzing about the reimagined theatre.

Today, the Ritz Theatre stands proudly, humming with creativity and culture in Winter Haven!

I waddled around in sheer delight, feeling like I was among family.

It made my little rubber heart swell!

As I waddled up to the bar, I notice a detail I had missed: the bar stools are duck-themed!

Complete with webbed feet for their bases!

Imagine if they were more my size!

Now, let’s dive beak-first into the exciting drink menu, shall we?

One of my humans couldn’t resist the Dirty Shirley, an adult remake of the classic Shirley Temple! The Dirty Shirley takes it up a notch with a splash of vodka.

Fort Clinch – Fernandina Beach, Florida

This historic gem is perched on the island’s North End, and let me tell you, it’s a quacker of a place!

Fort Clinch is a pre-Civil War fortress, built in the 19th century. It stands tall and proud amidst 1121 acres of breathtaking nature.

The backstory of Fort Clinch is remarkable!

It all began in 1736 when the first fortifications were set down.

However, the real magic happened in 1847 when construction on Fort Clinch kicked off.

It was like a giant sandcastle, but made of stone and brick!

Fast forward to 1898, when the Spanish-American War turned Fort Clinch into a bustling barracks and ammo depot.

With some fortifications added, it was all hands on deck!

But wouldn’t you know it, the action fizzled out.

As a result, poor ol’ Fort Clinch was left cooling its heels (or walls) once again.

In 1935, some visionary individuals recognized the significance of this place and transformed it into one of Florida’s first state parks.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, the fort received a much-needed makeover.

As a result, its historical charm was preserved for future generations to enjoy!

Today, it’s an amazing place for visitors to explore.

From bastions and guard rooms to kitchens and a blacksmith shop, every nook and cranny of this fort echoes with history.

The fort has been meticulously restored, with period furnishings and interactive exhibits that bring the past to life.

And boy, did I find a couple of faves that made my feathers ruffle joyfully!

Let’s dive right into the star of my show: the infamous ‘Ugly Duckling’ Corvette (officially known as the Corvette XP819 from 1964).

This beauty didn’t make it to the production line. Perhaps its tail was too long or its nose too pointy!

The ‘Ugly Duckling’ is a proud symbol of the Corvette’s history of daring to be different!

This quirky gem influenced the striking 1968 Corvette. If you squint just right, you might see some family resemblance between us: both champions of individuality!

Then there is the show-stopper: a bright red 1961 Corvette from country superstar Brad Paisley’s collection!

Impeccably restored, it showcases the rich history and iconic design of the Corvette!

The chrome accents shine under the lights and the interior – simply stunning with luxurious leather seats.

Brad loves that car so much that even his tour bus is painted to match!

Through interactive exhibits that brought Corvette history to life, I discovered the rich racing legacy and groundbreaking innovations behind the Corvette.

Did you know Corvettes are affectionately dubbed America’s sports car?

After spending time at the Corvette Museum, I have to agree!

And let’s not forget about the gift shop, what a treasure trove!

After looking high and low for rubber duckies without any luck, I snagged a Matchbox Corvette to cuddle in my wings!

Buc-ee’s – Kentucky

Today was a special day. I took a giant leap into the bustling wonderland of Buc-ee’s!

Rumour has it that some Buc-ee’s locations boast upwards of 100 gas pumps.

Let me tell you, they weren’t kidding! The line of pumps stretched as far as my little duck eyes could see.

However, refuelling isn’t the only reason to stop at this rest area. Instead, buckle up for an adventure!

As soon as I waddled through the entrance, I was welcomed into a vibrant world filled with exciting colours, delightful scents, and friendly smiles.

The sheer vastness of Buc-ee’s felt like stepping into an amusement park designed for roadtrippers! It was a feast for the senses. I was ready to dive right in!

Everywhere I looked, there were quirky, fun merchandise displays.

The selection, from T-shirts to mugs, was as dazzling as a sunny afternoon on the pond.

I was delighted to find a selection of Buc-ee Ducks, which made me feel right at home.

Of course, if you prefer the furry little beaver pals, those are also available.

The variety of snacks and merchandise at Buc-ee’s is truly a sight to behold.

It’s like stepping into a treasure trove of delicious treats and unique souvenirs, each one more tempting than the last.

Now, let’s dive into the most delectable part – snacks! I’ve never seen such a cornucopia of tasty treats in one place.

From freshly made fudge to a drool-worthy selection of beef jerky, there was something for everyone.

And the signature Buc-ee’s Beaver Nuggets – sweet, crunchy puffs like tiny clouds of joy!

As a duck who values cleanliness, I was thrilled to discover that the restrooms at Buc-ee’s were pristine!

Spotlessly clean and playfully decorated with beaver-themed decor, they were a cut above the rest.

Even my furry friends have designated facilities complete with an exercise run for them to stretch their legs.

How considerate!

The staff was another highlight of my visit – friendly, welcoming, and enthusiastic.
