Today, I embarked on a delightful adventure in the charming streets of St. Augustine, Florida! From my cozy perch in my human backpack, I was excited to explore the oldest city in the United States.
As we arrived, I was immediately captivated by the stunning Spanish architecture surrounding us.
The historic Castillo de San Marcos, with its formidable walls and scenic views of Matanzas Bay, was a highlight! My human even let me sit on the parapets for a photo—talk about a quack-tastic view!
Next, we waddled down the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, where I admired the quaint shops and vibrant colours of the buildings. The smell of fresh fudge wafted through the air, and I wished I could indulge. But what I did get to do was become a pirate! Even if just for a quick picture.
We stumbled upon the famous Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. My human tossed a penny in for good luck, and I couldn’t help but wonder if a splash of water might grant me eternal youth (or at least a good scrub!). We explored the lush gardens and even learned about the indigenous Timucua people—what a rich history!
With its rich history and charming atmosphere, St. Augustine has undoubtedly earned a spot in my rubber heart. I can’t wait to tell all my bath-time friends about my quacking good time here! Until next time, St. Augustine!
Today was splashtastic as I paddled my way to St. Augustine, Florida! Can you believe I got to see the historic Castillo de San Marcos? Just imagine me bobbing about on the gentle waves of the Matanzas River, gazing at that massive fortress standing proud against the bright blue sky. Those coquina walls looked so inviting; they practically called my name!
Let me tell you, Castillo San Marcos is not just any old fort; it’s one of the most incredible national parks in the Sunshine State! This magnificent structure was built way back in the 17th century, starting in 1672, by the clever Spanish to keep their empire safe from nosy neighbours. They had to deal with the British, pirates, and who knows what else!
The fort has a remarkable history of resilience. In 1702, the British attempted to attack, but to no avail. They couldn’t breach those impenetrable walls, not even when they set the city ablaze! This is a fort with some serious street cred! Subsequent attacks in 1728 and 1740 were just as fruitless—those Brits must’ve been so frustrated!
After a whirlwind of history, Florida became a British colony in 1763. This place has seen many changes; it’s like a soap opera! During the Revolutionary War, the Castillo transformed into a military prison and held three signers of the Declaration of Independence within its walls. Can you imagine the stories they must have shared?
I felt a bit awestruck by the impressive row of cannons and the fascinating history of weaponry that played a vital role in protecting this significant piece of land.
When Florida returned to Spain in 1784, the Castillo was renamed Fort Marion in honour of a revolutionary hero. By 1822, Florida had permanently become under the domain of the United States, and in a heartwarming twist, it returned to its original name, Castillo de San Marcos, in 1942!
Now, let’s talk about the vibes! The fort was buzzing with families snapping photos, and I couldn’t help but chuckle as little ones posed with their rubber duckies! I, of course, had the best view! Peeking through those narrow windows, I imagined the brave soldiers who once stood sentinel, watching the glimmering waters. The ramparts offered stunning views of the coastline and sailboats gliding along, and oh, how I wished for a ride! But alas, I’m just a duck!
This stronghold has seen over 315 years of history, and here I was—a little rubber duck soaking it all in.
When I returned to my cozy little pond, I couldn’t wait to regale my bath toy buddies with tales of my day at Castillo de San Marcos! I might be a quacking duck, but now I’m carrying a treasure trove of history. Quack-tastic, right?
Hey there, adventure seekers! It’s Bob here, paddling through the magical waters of St. Augustine, Florida—where the past dances with the present like the waves doing the cha-cha all around me! Today, I’m right by the iconic Bridge of Lions, this fantastic drawbridge that whisks visitors from the city’s lively streets to the sun-kissed shores of Anastasia Island, all while crossing the sparkling Matanzas Bay.
Now, let me set the scene! Picture this: a duo of majestic marble lion statues stand guard over the bridge, looking like they’ve just stepped out of an Italian Renaissance painting! These royal guardians, replicas of Florence’s famous Medici lions, have been watching since the bridge opened its doors in 1927. They’ve had their share of adventures, too—after a bit of a makeover and some relocation drama, they roared back to their posts in March 2011, ready to oversee one of the most picturesque spots in the nation’s oldest city, famously known as “The Most Beautiful Bridge in Dixie.” Talk about a lion’s share of the glory!
What I love most about this bridge is how it fuses beauty and functions like a finely tuned ukulele. It’s a hotspot for duck-hoppers like me, with lush palm trees, charming gazebos, and a cool new dock extending into the bay, perfect for catching a sunset or just soaking up the vibes. And here’s the kicker—every hour and half hour, from 7 AM to 6 PM, the bridge raises its arms in a grand theatrical display for passing boats. Just picture it—a pirate ship gliding through as the lions look on with their stoic gaze!
Speaking of pirates, I had a moment of panic when I saw one coming through! My little heart raced and I nearly quacked my pants, thinking, “Oh no! The pirates are taking over!” But fear not! The Black Raven is a pirate ship designed for live performances. Phew! I dodged a close one there.
As I drift along, the air is filled with laughter and the magical sounds of storytelling. Families come together, sharing moments as precious as gold, all while surrounded by the charm of this historic site. There’s something heartwarming about the way people connect here, turning the Bridge of Lions into not just a crossing but a symbol of unity echoing the rich heritage of St. Augustine.
As the sun dips low, painting the sky in glorious shades of gold and rose, I can’t help but feel thankful. This isn’t just a stunning bridge; it’s a treasured icon of St. Augustine, woven into the vibrant tapestry of the city’s story. I feel beyond lucky to soak it all in!
Hey there, fellow adventurers! Bobber Duck here, floating your way from Fernandina Beach, Florida, where I’ve just paddled past the magnificent Fort Clinch! This historic gem is perched on the island’s North End, and let me tell you, it’s a quacker of a place!
Imagine this: a pre-Civil War fortress, built in the 19th century, standing tall and proud amidst 1121 acres of breathtaking nature. With sandy beaches stretching over a mile, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing day in the sun, with eagles and ospreys soaring above. Keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife.
Now, what’s remarkable is the backstory of this fort. It all began in 1736 when the first fortifications were set down, but the real magic happened in 1847 when construction on Fort Clinch kicked off. It was like a giant sandcastle, but made of stone and brick! Sadly, the fort wasn’t finished when the Civil War rolled around, and they hadn’t even put cannons in place. Just imagine—a fort ready for action but still a little shy!
Fast forward to 1898, when the Spanish-American War turned Fort Clinch into a bustling barracks and ammo depot. With some fortifications added, it was all hands on deck! But wouldn’t you know it, the action fizzled out, and poor ol’ Fort Clinch was left cooling its heels (or walls) once again.
But that’s not all! In 1935, some visionary individuals recognized the significance of this place and transformed it into one of Florida’s first state parks. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, the fort received a much-needed makeover, preserving its historical charm for future generations to enjoy!
Today, it’s a delightful place for visitors to explore. From bastions and guard rooms to kitchens and a blacksmith shop, every nook and cranny of this fort echoes with history. The fort has been meticulously restored, with period furnishings and interactive exhibits that bring the past to life. And the best part? Friendly volunteers and rangers are ready to share all the juicy tales of bravery and battles within these walls!

Bob here, reporting from my egg-citing adventure at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky!
I couldn’t resist paddling over to dive into the dazzling world of America’s favourite sports car!
Whistles and cheerful honking of horns greeted me in the lobby!
It was a celebration fit for a Corvette superstar.
A lucky new owner was picking up their sparkling blue ride right in the museum, not at the factory across the street.
What a grand entrance!
Everyone gathered around, clapping and cheering as the thrilled owner cruised off in their shiny pride and joy.
Once I float into the main halls of the museum, my rubbery eyes widen with joy.
Corvettes galore glimmer like jewels from every decade!
Car enthusiasts buzz around like bees in a flower patch, and their excitement is utterly contagious!
The museum takes visitors on a thrilling ride through Corvette history.
Showcasing incredible design prototypes all the way to legendary models.
And boy, did I find a couple of faves that made my feathers ruffle joyfully!
Let’s dive right into the star of my show: the infamous ‘Ugly Duckling’ Corvette (officially known as the Corvette XP819 from 1964).
Talk about a unique design!
This beauty didn’t make it to the production line. Perhaps its tail was too long or its nose too pointy!
The ‘Ugly Duckling’ is a proud symbol of the Corvette’s history of daring to be different!
This quirky gem influenced the striking 1968 Corvette. If you squint just right, you might see some family resemblance between us: both champions of individuality!
Then there is the show-stopper: a bright red 1961 Corvette from country superstar Brad Paisley’s collection!
Impeccably restored, it showcases the rich history and iconic design of the Corvette!
The chrome accents shine under the lights and the interior – simply stunning with luxurious leather seats.
Brad loves that car so much that even his tour bus is painted to match!
Through interactive exhibits that brought Corvette history to life, I discovered the rich racing legacy and groundbreaking innovations behind the Corvette.
Did you know Corvettes are affectionately dubbed America’s sports car?
After spending time at the Corvette Museum, I have to agree!
And let’s not forget about the gift shop, what a treasure trove!
After looking high and low for rubber duckies without any luck, I snagged a Matchbox Corvette to cuddle in my wings!
The perfect souvenir to remember my quack-tastic time!
If you’re a car lover, a history buff, or love unique attractions, the National Corvette Museum is an absolute must-see!
Don’t forget to show some love to the Ugly Duckling – it’s bursting with character and charm!

With frosty air and snow piled high, I spend most days snuggled up indoors.
But today I’m revved up and ready at the legendary Speed World – where the rubber meets the track, and the excitement is off the charts!
You might be scratching your head, wondering how a cheerful little rubber duck like me ended up at a high-speed go-kart racetrack.
It all began with my buddy Rick and his adrenaline-hungry motorcycle pals.
They refuse to let winter slow them down!
When the snow blankets the roads, they crank up the fun with meet-ups, sparking camaraderie and keeping the excitement brewing until spring.
And this time? Oh, it was a Go-Kart racing BOBortunity at Speed World – an adrenaline explosion just waiting to happen!

Rick’s excitement was contagious as he paced back and forth, dreaming up plans. “BOB,” he declared with a twinkle in his eye, “tomorrow we’re blasting off to Speed World for indoor racing! Winter can’t hold us back!”
I quacked and bobbed with glee, my bright yellow self practically glowing under the garage lights. The anticipation had my tiny rubber heart racing – I couldn’t wait to dive into the action!
Stepping into Speed World was like entering a wonderland of speed!

In fact, they were transforming into fierce competitors. I was practically bouncing off the walls with excitement!
The first race was about to launch, and I was lined up, ready to zoom alongside Rick. But – oh no!
I discovered I didn’t meet the height requirements. WHAT?! My rubbery little dreams of racing had to take a backseat.
But I wasn’t going to let that dampen my spirits! I cheered like a wild fan on the sidelines.
WHOOSH! Off they went, engines roaring, adrenaline pumping as they took off like rockets through turns and straightaway zips.

Soft chatter of happy customers and the clinking of coffee cups
It is the perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon.
And then there is the menu! Le Croissant offers a range of scrumptious options.
The cheese and potato soup was an absolute standout. Creamy and rich, with melted cheese swirling through every spoonful.
It was like a warm hug on a chilly day.
The tomato soup was equally enchanting—bright and flavourful. It perfectly complemented the fresh focaccia bread accompanying my meal.

Bob here for a thrilling winter escapade in the lively St. Boniface, Winnipeg’s hidden gem!
Did you know that long before Winnipeg became the winter playground we cherish today, Indigenous peoples lived on this land along the beautiful Red River?
Fast-forward to the early 1800s. At that time, French settlers arrived, seeking adventure and delicious pastries!
The first settlement here in 1818 was like a delightful surprise snowflake, paving the way for the vibrant community of St. Boniface.
Waddling through the frosty streets, I could feel the excitement of those early pioneers bustling around!
Just picture it – houses, farms, and trading posts springing up. These features created a lively hub of French culture filled with colourful festivals, delightful music, and oh-so-scrumptious feasts!
I can almost taste the mouthwatering tourtière and fresh baguettes wafting through the crisp winter air!
In 1901, St. Boniface celebrated its official city status, ready to welcome everyone with open flippers!
The arrival of the railway added an extra zing, connecting locals to a world of adventure.
As I waddled through, I spotted charming historical buildings and lively streets.
Each of these held whispers of days gone by.
But wait – every good story has a twist!
As Winnipeg grew in the mid-20th century, St. Boniface embraced change and was officially incorporated into the City of Winnipeg in 1972.
Yet fear not! This neighbourhood’s spirit is as strong as a duck on a mission!
St. Boniface continues to charm visitors with its distinct culture. It is the largest Francophone community in Western Canada.
Upon entering St. Boniface, my little rubber heart danced joyfully!
The crisp air was filled with the delightful aroma of baked goods from local bakeries, luring me like a shiny object.
I couldn’t resist stopping at Le Croissant, where I enjoyed a steaming cup of hot chocolate and a delightfully flaky croissant – heavenly!
A must-visit in the area is the stunning St. Boniface Cathedral.
Although the site has been home to missions for over 200 years, the iconic structure was built in 1908.
The magnificent façade still stands despite a catastrophic fire in 1968.
It is a symbol of the St. Boniface community’s resilience.
Meanwhile, a new cathedral has been erected immediately behind
This architectural wonder sparkled against the snowy backdrop even in the winter chill, inviting awe and admiration!
Just outside the cathedral lies the burial site of Louis Riel, a key figure in Manitoba’s history. Once viewed as controversial, he is now celebrated for his contributions, remembered every year during a provincial holiday. His legacy is a testament to Manitoba’s rich and complex history.
As I ventured further into St Boniface, I discovered another architectural treasure: the Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church.
A postmodern marvel designed by Étienne Gaboury in 1968. Its unique shape, resembling a tipi, is a striking and fabulous addition to the St. Boniface skyline!
Waddling on, I ventured down Boulevard Provencher, which led me to the river.
There, a beautiful trail stretches across from the Historic Forks.
During winter, the river transforms into a robust playground, allowing families to skate and stroll along the scenic path.
My rubber heart swelled with joy seeing the community embrace the winter magic of St. Boniface!
To all you winter wanderers out there, check out the enchanting St. Boniface!
With its rich history and vibrant culture, this charming neighbourhood is a wonderland waiting to be explored!
Bob here to embark on a dazzling winter escapade at The Forks in Winnipeg!
The Forks has been a legendary gathering spot for thousands of years!
Indigenous peoples first recognized this magical place, using its rivers for fishing, hunting, and trading. They established a deep connection to the land.
Fast forward to the late 17th century – cue the fur traders paddling in! The Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company turned The Forks into a bustling trade hub.
Fast forward again. Boom! The late 20th century transformed this lively space into the cultural playground we all adore today. It’s a sparkling gem of heritage and spirit!
As I waddled into The Forks, the magical winter wonderland greeted me!
One of my absolute favourite winter activities? Skating on the Canopy Rink!
Can you imagine? Dancing beneath a canopy of twinkling lights! My skating skills are limited, but that didn’t stop me from cheering on as humans twirled and laughed around me.
Next, I had my eyes set on the River Trail!
Sadly, my human pals deemed the ice too thin for our expedition. This gorgeous stretch hugs the frozen rivers. It offers views that would dazzle even the grumpiest of ducks. Perfect for those brisk winter strolls!
And then there’s The Forks Market—talk about a feast for the senses!
I was enveloped by the fantastic aromas of fresh-baked goodies, savoury cheeses, and local treats that made my rubbery mouth water.
The stalls overflow with handmade crafts and unique gifts.
And guess what? I even spotted some fellow rubber ducks hiding in adorable shops. They put a smile on my beak!
Let’s not forget about the Johnston Terminal, a charming historic gem!
Inside, you’ll find boutiques, eateries, and cozy cafes, all buzzing with happy vibes. I floated about, marvelling at the mix of old and new architecture. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the scents of cocoa and goodies from nearby vendors.
I overheard a group of kids plotting their next grand adventure at the Children’s Museum. How exciting!
Speaking of which, the Children’s Museum! It’s a land of playful wonders and interactive exhibits, but my visit was on Christmas Day. The doors were locked tight. You win some, you lose some, right? I consoled myself with the delightful sights outside.
If you’re looking for a cozy after-adventure spot, check out The Inn at The Forks – a luxurious oasis among the excitement. Slip into relaxation mode after all the frosty fun!
Today, The Forks is the heartbeat of Winnipeg!
In winter transforms into a festive wonderland with ice sculptures, winter markets, and twinkling holiday lights.
Families gather for outdoor shenanigans, and cozy fire pits beckon everyone to share stories under the stars.
It’s the perfect fusion of history, community, and merriment.
Whether you’re hunting for thrilling adventures, tasty treats, or a splash of history, The Forks is a must-visit when in Winnipeg.
What a festive day it was! On Christmas Day 2024, I found myself wandering the streets of Winnipeg.
Let me tell you, even with the clouds overhead, a balmy -1°C felt downright cozy. It was perfect for a bit of holiday adventure!
My adventure began in the charming St. Boniface area, where I floated downtown via the Provencher Bridge.
This isn’t just any old bridge; it’s a four-lane wonder that’s a rubber ducky’s dream!
It spans the Red River, connecting Winnipeg East to the city’s electrifying heart.
Built in 2003, it’s like the superhighway for adventurous ducks.
It took over from an old bridge that had seen a whopping 90 years of duck traffic. Isn’t that impressive?
But hold onto your feathers because the real star of my winter wonderland? The awe-inspiring Esplanade Riel Bridge!
This pedestrian delight opened just a few months after Provencher, and let me tell you, it’s a swaying paradise. I waddled along the suspended walkway, far from the honking cars and smoky fumes. In this space, I was revelling in the rich cultural vibes of Winnipeg.
The idea behind the Esplanade Riel Bridge was all about bridging gaps—literally!
The bridge was designed to unite Winnipeg’s Anglo and Franco communities, with its name paying homage to Louis Riel, the Métis co-founder of Manitoba.
It’s not just a crossing; it’s a symbol of togetherness!
Initially, the plan included a restaurant on the bridge for guests to enjoy a meal with a view – talk about dining with a backdrop!
However, when the bridge opened in 2003, that space was surprisingly empty.
In July 2005, The Salisbury House decided to dive in and turn it into a culinary hotspot. Summer came, and foot traffic was as lively as a duck pond on a sunny day.
Once winter rolled in, the guests slipped away faster than I could quack.
By 2008, they decided to go seasonal.
By 2013, they floated off the bridge but remain a Manitoba icon throughout the city.
Since then, other attempts have come and gone.
Chez Sophie sur le Pont tried in 2013 but folded by 2015.
Mon Ami Louis opened in July 2015, only to close its doors in 2020. The restaurant on a bridge dream seems more burdensome to pull off than expected!
But don’t worry! The Esplanade Riel Bridge is still a beloved icon!
It’s a fabulous hangout spot for walkers and a paradise for photographers. I mean, come on! It offers breathtaking views of the river, the historic Forks, and the impressive Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
The sights from the bridge are nothing short of spectacular.
I watched the icy wind tussle my feathers and saw how a few hardy folks braved the weather.
I plan to return when the summer sun shines bright, bringing more folks down to the Esplanade Riel Bridge.
The souvenir kiosks will buzz with energy, and the bridge will be alive with laughter and joy.
I have a tale to tell you from the frosty corners of Winnipeg, Manitoba!
On December 6th, I waddled onto the scene when I heard about a truly inspirational human – Trevor, our Big-Hearted Biker. He’s set up camp for ten epic days to splash holiday cheer throughout his chilly neighbourhood!
His bright red tent pops against winter’s white canvas!
It’s situated at the buzzing corner of Main and Higgins, where Trevor is collecting donations of food and toys.
With these donations, he will throw an unforgettable community Christmas dinner on December 14th.
And guess what? Santa’s on the guest list!
Can you imagine the twinkling eyes of the little ones as they unwrap toys? It warms my rubber duck heart!
While many folks talk about spreading holiday cheer, Trevor is making it happen.
I was excited when I heard about this chance to join in, so I rallied my human friend Rick to gather some of the needs from Trevor’s wish list.
Off we waddled to the collection site, and boy, was it a sight to behold!
We found Trevor effortlessly hauling donations with a genuine smile that could melt the iciest of hearts.
He and his wife were sitting at a small table, enjoying each other’s company, with a cozy vibe that was more inviting than a warm bath!
Soon, we learned that this wasn’t Trevor’s first rodeo – his charitable efforts started in 2017!
Trevor’s giving spirit shone when he decided to return home to Winnipeg from Nova Scotia.
Trevor was short of the funds for the trip, so he sought help from Canada’s Social Services to no avail.
His only option was to start the trek on foot, hitchhiking the 3400 kilometres.
He turned his trek into a goodwill mission!
He helped tidy up towns, built wheelchair ramps, and spread kindness like confetti. Along the way, he left a trail of hope and inspiration in his wake!
Six months later, he finally soared home for Christmas, only to find his old neighbourhood desperately needing some holiday sparkle.
Cue the heartfelt “HUMBUG!”
Determined to revive the festive spirit, he organized his first community celebration, and guess what?
Three hundred people showed, their faces lit up with joy and anticipation!
Talk about a party!
After a few quiet years due to shifting COVID restrictions, Trevor sprang back into action.
Now, he hopes to throw his biggest bash to date, spreading joy and warmth to all who attend!
As of December 7th, Trevor had gathered about 80% of what he needs to ensure this festive gathering is a blast, and I bet he’ll overshoot that target like a duck soaring through the air!
Trevor doesn’t stop with Christmas cheer; he’s also a committed member of the Veterans’ Motorcycle Club, working to ensure veterans get all the respect and support they deserve!
Inspired doesn’t even begin to cover it! I’m thrilled to share Trevor’s story, especially knowing he’s braving the Manitoba winter temperatures that might dip as low as minus 27 degrees Celsius (minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit).
So, let’s make some waves together! Please share this post far and wide to help boost Trevor’s donations and support the most spectacular celebration his community has ever seen!
This Big-Hearted Biker is a beacon of inspiration whose selfless actions inspire us all. His tireless efforts spread joy and kindness to the community.
Bob here, soaking up the charm at Audrey’s Motel in Missouri, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience!
The delightful duo of Hank and Mary own and operate Audrey’s Motel.
Their passion for hospitality shines through every nook and cranny of this cozy establishment.
They put their heart and soul into creating a welcoming atmosphere for all guests.
As a rubber duck who knows a thing or two about comfort, I can appreciate that!
Now, let’s talk about the cleanliness of the lobby and the rooms. I must say, I was highly impressed!
They prioritize cleanliness here, which makes for a comfortable and pleasant stay, whether you’re a human or a rubber duck.
I felt right at home as I floated around the bathroom sink.
Speaking of pleasant experiences, the owners’ friendliness is truly unmatched.
Hank and Mary greet guests with smiles and warmth, instantly making you feel like part of the family.
They have so many life experiences to share. The time just slips away amidst the laughter and camaraderie.
Their genuine kindness extends to everyone; however, there is a special place in Hank’s heart for bikers and veterans!
One of the standout features of Audrey’s Motel is the unique room dedicated to John Deere tractors!
The decor in that room is truly something to quack about. From Deere-themed artwork to bedspread patterns that would make any farmer proud, it’s a perfect homage to the beloved green machines. If you’re a fan of tractors – or want to experience something truly unique – this room is a must-visit!
Hank is a life-time biker and Harley enthusiast. So, as you can imagine, riders are a welcome addition to Audrey’s Hotel.
If you pull in on a motorcycle, an ice-cold beer will greet you at check-in!
Hank will pull his Harley out and even act as a local tour guide around Mound City if he has time.
There is no end to the riding stories that Hank has to share.
I can’t forget to give a special shout-out to Hank and Mary’s dedication to veterans.
Hank is a disabled American veteran who swells with pride for the United States and his contributions to freedom. They go above and beyond to honour others who have served our country.
From special discounts to walls adorned with memorabilia celebrating their service, they have a heart for veterans.
As a rubber duck who loves freedom, I truly admire the commitment to giving back to those who protect it.
Audrey’s Motel is a gem in Missouri that I highly recommend to anyone. Choose it if you are looking for immaculate rooms, rider support, respect for veterans or owners on site to share their many passions.
Today, I am wading into the tales of history with my trusty human companions at the legendary Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Silos.
I was travelling with brave U.S. military veterans near Cooperstown, North Dakota, who made the visit even more meaningful.
The air was thick with curiosity, and I quacked in excitement as the stories began to unfold around me.
Originally built during the height of the Cold War, these silos were part of the U.S. Army’s Minuteman missile system.
This system was a critical deterrent against the towering threat of nuclear conflict, particularly from the Soviet Union.
Established in the early 1960s, this strategic network aimed to provide a swift counterstrike capability.
The Minuteman missiles, capable of being launched within minutes, were deeply buried beneath the surface. Hidden from sight and fortified to withstand a first strike.
The silos themselves were a marvel of engineering. Hardened concrete structures that housed the missiles ensured they remained safe and operational even in the direst of circumstances.
Each silo was equipped with advanced technology that enabled remote missile launches.
A pair of Air Force officers would be stationed in a command capsule, constantly on alert. Ready to respond at a moment’s notice. Just imagining all that technology beneath my little duck flippers sent shivers of awe through me!
The operation of these sites continued with rigorous protocols, ensuring both security and functionality.
Each missile silo was equipped with multiple safety measures to prevent unauthorized access. I must say, it was a little ominous but entirely necessary.
The veterans in our group appreciated the heavy burden of responsibility borne by those who guarded these missile systems.
As history marched onward, the presence of these missile silos came to symbolize the shifting tides of global relations.
With the Cold War extending into the late 1980s, there was a sense of urgency, yet also a growing desire for peace.
In 1983, the Reagan administration chose to modernize the nuclear arsenal and missile systems.
Ironically, the very name “Reagan” set a new tone for discussions around nuclear arms, pushing nations towards disarmament rather than conflict.
By the late 1990s, relations with former adversaries had evolved. The vintage technology became less relevant, and the decision to decommission the silos marked the end of an era.
The Cold War had melted into a history that many hoped would never repeat itself.
While some silos were dismantled, others remain as poignant reminders of the past, standing like silent sentinels over the flat North Dakota landscape.
As I bobbed around, I couldn’t help but marvel at the layers of history beneath our feet.
It was intriguing, yet a little eerie, to think about the fortifications and the measures put in place to protect the nation that existed right there in the heart of the Midwest.
I quacked in appreciation for the military veterans in our group, recognizing their contributions and the complex legacy of the very sites we visited.
So there I was, a humble rubber duck, floating alongside proud defenders of freedom.
Soaking up the stories of the Ronald Reagan Missileman Silos—truly a fascinating chapter in the ever-evolving tale of national security!
Quack on, I mused, as we paddled away from this historic landmark, pondering the balance of peace and preparedness in a world ever-unfolding around us.
As we embarked on our journey from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Ottawa, Ontario, we made a splash with a delightful stop in Ashland, Wisconsin. Being a seasoned traveller, I was excited for our planned stay at the Ashland Best Western, a favourite among my humans.
At first, we paddled past the hotel a couple of times. It wasn’t until I quacked a little louder that they realized the Southern mansion-style building was indeed our destination. Talk about a quacking good surprise!
It felt more like we were checking into a charming museum than a motel. The era-specific furnishings and nostalgic photos transported us back in time, sparking stories of days gone by.
But don’t let the historical charm fool you – the room was equipped with all the modern comforts my humans love at Best Western. After a day of road travel, it was just what we needed for a peaceful night’s sleep.
While my humans took a stroll, I floated alongside them, discovering a magical back porch overlooking Chequamegon Bay, right off Lake Superior. What a stunning view! With the shimmering waters in the background, I couldn’t help but quack in approval—it was the perfect photo op!
Come morning, we were treated to a hearty, complimentary country-style breakfast. I watched as my humans dug into delicious pancakes and scrambled eggs, wishing I could join in. Sadly, our time in Ashland flew by, and soon we were back on the road, leaving behind the charm of the hotel and the beauty of the bay.
But fear not! We plan to return in the summer. I can’t wait to make more waves at this unique Best Western. Until next time, Ashland! You can bet I’ll be quacking about our adventure for a long time to come!
Hey there, my fellow adventure seekers! It’s your pal Bob the Rubber Duck, and oh boy, do I have a quacking good story to share!
Recently, my human companions and I took a detour that had us all giggling with glee: a trip to the Uranus Fudge Factory in Anderson, Indiana! Buckle up, because this peculiar ride is packed with sweetness and silliness!
The original Uranus Fudge Factory opened in Missouri in 2015 and quickly became a fan favourite. The mastermind behind this magical store is none other than Louie Keen, who created an atmosphere bursting with joy and laughter. With locations sprouting up in Indiana, including Anderson and Richmond, fudge lovers from all over are flocking to experience this delightful destination.
From quirky branding to an array of fudge flavours, it’s a stop you absolutely can’t miss!
Upon arrival, I was greeted with big, bright smiles from the staff. “Welcome to Uranus!” they cheerfully exclaimed, setting an upbeat tone for our visit. In that moment, I felt right at home in this candy-coated carnival of sweets!
The Uranus Fudge Factory is more than just a candy shop; it’s a treasure trove of fun!
This place has become the go-to pitstop for travellers searching for silliness and scrumptious treats.
And let me tell you, the fudge is made fresh daily—hand-cut and packed to perfection! It’s no wonder everyone declares,
“The Best Fudge Comes from Uranus!”
Watching them whip up those gooey delights was nothing short of mesmerizing! Then came my moment of bliss: sampling flavours that had my rubber ducky taste buds tingling! From classic chocolate to wild concoctions like peanut butter bacon fudge—talk about an unexpected (but delicious) twist that made me quack with joy!
The vibrant decor was an explosion of playful puns and eye-catching signs—it felt like stepping right into a comedy fantasy! Every corner was a photo op waiting to happen, and I was ready to strike a pose!
One of my favourite highlights was getting an up-close view of all the quirky statues, cut-outs, and attractions.
From zoo animals to kissing booths, the smiles just kept on coming from Uranus.
Obviously Uranus Fudge Factory isn’t just about the sweetness; it’s a whole celebration of fun and laughter!
The quirky vibes and silly themes kept everyone beaming from ear to ear. Here, joy is as essential as the fudge itself, and I soaked in every hilarious second!
If you ever find yourself on a road trip through Indiana or Missouri and spot that irresistible Uranus Fudge Factory sign, don’t hesitate—pull over and dive into URANUS where you will experience laughter, scrumptious fudge, and the warmest welcome around.
Hello there! Today I am reminiscing about bobbing along the delightful English River, imagining myself as Captain Kirk on a starship-like adventure!
You wouldn’t believe the wild tales I’ve encountered. Especially the one about Riverside, Iowa—a tiny town with dreams a-plenty. Not the least of which is shouting from the rooftops that it’s the future birthplace of none other than the iconic Captain Kirk!
Let me take you back to 1985. At that time, Steve Miller, who just so happens was a City Council member and a hardcore Star Trek fan, decided to “Boldly go where no man had gone before”.
Inspired by Gene Roddenberry’s legendary book, The Making of Star Trek, where Roddenberry reveals that James Tiberius Kirk is supposedly born in Iowa. Steve thought,
“Why not Riverside?”
Can you believe it?
And guess what? His bold proposal passed through the City Council like a shuttlecraft through space! Talk about cosmic destiny! Indeed, one can say the spirit of Captain Kirk inspired him.
Riverside’s Kirk connection got a dazzling boost when, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, our fearless captain confirmed he hails from this very town!
To commemorate this epic story, Riverside erected a fabulous monument that boldly proclaims,
“Riverside, Iowa: Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk.”
Fun fact: the plaque says Kirk popped into the universe on March 22, 2228—making it even more special because that’s also the birthday of the legendary actor, William Shatner! Now that’s what I call a cosmic coincidence!
Now, let me tell you about the cherry on top—The Voyage Home Riverside History Center, which locals affectionately call the “Star Trek Museum.”
It’s a haven filled to the brim with Star Trek-themed exhibits, including a time capsule and a Star Trek bathroom (yes, you heard that right!). There is also an awesome tribute to the fascinating women of Star Trek.
Imagine this: when it opened on June 27, 2008, the original Chekov himself, Walter Koenig, floated in to cut the ribbon! It was a momentous day for fans of Captain Kirk.
It’s not just a museum; it’s a joyous celebration!
The center beautifully merges Riverside’s past with its spirited connection to the Star Trek universe. It showcases memorabilia, NASA displays, and even a tribute to William Shatner’s visit. Wowza!
And then every June, Riverside turns its excitement up to warp speed with an incredible bash called Trek Fest.
Oh boy, oh boy—it’s like a universal party where Trekkies gather to revel in the magic of Star Trek! There’s parading and trivia games that really put your knowledge to the test. An irresistible charm fills the air as everyone gets decked out as their favourite characters.
You’ll find folks like Spock, Uhura, and even Klingons waddling around—nothing beats a gathering like this!
So here I float, soaking up the sun and the laughter, marvelling at the creativity and enthusiasm radiating from both locals and visitors. Much like Captain Kirk would have appreciated.
Riverside, Iowa, the quirky little gem, truly embodies the spirit and legacy of Captain James T. Kirk!
With each wave and ripple, I can’t help but quack with joy at the vibrant tapestry of history, fun, and community.
Who knew being a rubber duck could lead me on such a stellar adventure?
Hey there, fellow adventure buddies! It’s me, Bob the Rubber Duck, ready to quack about my latest splash-tastic adventure in the charming town of Pontiac, Illinois! Grab your seats and let’s dive into this delightful journey through a historic downtown bursting with colour, stories, and quirky finds!
We only had one night to dive into this gem, located just 100 miles outside of Chicago, on our way back from a whirlwind business trip. Little did we know, Pontiac is the kind of place that deserves WAY more than just a night. A proper soak in all its splendour is necessary! But hey, we made the most of our short visit. And what an adventure it was!
First stop: the welcoming shores of the Pontiac Best Western! As soon as we waddled in, we were greeted with cozy accommodations and smiles as warm as a summer day. This was the perfect little nest to rest our feathery bodies after a long day of cruising the highways.
As we took to the streets of the historic downtown, I was absolutely wowed by the dazzling murals that covered the walls like a vibrant patchwork quilt!
Each mural is a little story in itself – celebrating Pontiac’s rich history, quirky culture, and the spirit of the famous Route 66.
Now, let’s talk history!
Did you know that Abraham Lincoln spent time in Pontiac as a young lawyer?
It’s true! The future president honed his skills here, tackling cases and leaving a mark on this charming town.
Who would’ve thought I’d stumble upon the tale of the humble prairie lawyer who soared to become one of America’s most iconic figures?
Next, we waddled right into a cool find: “Bob’s Road Yacht”!
Yep, you heard it – another BOB for the record books! This one’s Bob Waldmire, the legendary Route 66 artist.
His “road yacht” is an old school bus transformed into a travelling art studio! Talk about a mobile masterpiece!
And, of course, no grand adventure would be complete without tasting the local fare!
We hopped into delightful eateries where we indulged in everything from classic comfort food to scrumptious local dishes. Each had our taste buds doing a happy dance!
Each bite was a tasty tribute to the heart and soul of Pontiac.
Let me tell you, Pontiac, Illinois, isn’t just another spot on the map – it’s where small-town America shines like a beacon! From the moment we rolled into town, it felt like a nostalgic trip back. Those were the days when the journey was just as thrilling as the destination. With the historic Route 66 weaving through downtown, Pontiac embodies the spirit of the Mother Road. It has attracted travellers from all corners of the globe!
As my adventure in Pontiac came to a close, my little rubber heart was overflowing with gratitude. I was thankful for the chance to experience such a charming slice of Americana.
You can bet I’m adding a repeat visit to my travel wish list to soak in all the wonders I missed! From swinging bridges to Looking for Lincoln to museums, golfing and watersports, Pontiac has something for everyone!
So if you find yourself cruising down Route 66 or looking for a fun getaway from the hustle and bustle of the big city, make sure to stop in Pontiac!
With its rich history, vibrant murals, and the warmest hospitality, it’s a stop that’s nothing short of quack-tastic! See you on the open road!
Check Out Our Route 66 Passport Run with Support Bikers
On July 13, 2023, Rick strapped me onto his gleaming Goldwing. Off we set from Winnipeg, Manitoba, bound for Pontiac, Illinois, for the Route 66 Passport Run.
Today, I am sharing highlights of an inspiring experience I had during my incredible adventure in a charming little coastal town in the breathtaking Costa Rica!
Picture this: I’m nestled in a vibrant beach house, surrounded by swaying palm trees and the soothing serenade of ocean waves. It felt like paradise, and I was ready to dive headfirst into every delightful moment!
We were greeted by our wonderful caretaker, a genuinely kind soul named Andres. His broad smile was like sunshine breaking through the clouds. Furthermore, every laugh was a splash of joy against the sunny backdrop of our beach getaway.
Andres’ family, just as warm and inviting as the golden rays above, lived in a cozy little cottage right by the shore. Happiness floated there like the sweet scent of ripe coconuts.
Although they didn’t have a mountain of toys like I do, their hearts overflowed with love. Andres adored his little dogs, who zipped around like furry torpedoes, filling our days with laughter. I cheered them on from my comfy spot, feeling the simple thrills of vacation joy.
Andres was a man of endless talent – always on the lookout for small jobs to bring in extra income. He painted houses with meticulous care. He also landscaped yards with a touch of creativity and sold refreshing coconuts and cold drinks to beachgoers. Moreover, his entrepreneurial spirit was contagious, reminding us to appreciate the simple pleasures life has to offer.
One of the highlights of my life was an unforgettable day of spearfishing! I bobbed along the coast, grinning with excitement as the brisk ocean breeze whipped around us. When we caught our first fish, I could barely contain my excitement – quack! As the humans dived into the deep, I floated above, marveling at the beautiful underwater ballet of colorful fish.
Andres also introduced us to the thrill of racing motorcycles along the pristine beach. The salty breeze tousled our hair as we zoomed down the shoreline.
As the sun began to set in a blaze of fiery colours, he surprised us with fresh fruit, handpicked and oh-so-delicious.
He even helped us evict any pesky lizards from our deck, always keeping our comfort at the forefront!
Evenings were magical, filled with laughter and glowing camaraderie under a blanket of stars. We gathered around a crackling fire, sharing stories from our worlds. Despite the occasional language barrier – our Spanish and his English were limited – we found delight in our shared gestures, laughter, and experiences. We didn’t just become friends; we became family.
When the sun dipped below the horizon, Andres patrolled the property, ensuring our safety while we enjoyed the tranquility of the beach. His unwavering care made us feel at safe and oh so special.
As our vacation began to fade away like a gentle tide, I felt a twinge in my rubber heart. The thought of leaving Andres and his family, who had become cherished friends, cast a shadow over my otherwise sunny adventure. They showed me the true essence of joy, resilience, and the dazzling moments we often overlook.
So, here’s a huge thank you to my dear friend Andres! For all the adventures, laughter, and unforgettable memories, the bond we formed will forever dance in my heart like a beautifully shared dream at sea. Your kindness and warmth have left a lasting impression on my rubbery soul. Until we meet again in the waves, keep shining and spreading your joyful spirit! Quack-tastic friends forever!
Bob here to paddle you through one of my absolute favourite places to chow down—Los Congos, near Orotina, Costa Rica!
This charming little gem is a must-stop if you’re cruising along the Pacific Coast and swinging by hotspots like Jaco or Manuel Antonio!
As I waddled up to Los Congos, I couldn’t help but admire the enchanting carvings that adorned the entrance—talk about eye candy!
Colourful wildlife and even an anatomically correct howler monkey greeted me.
Walking into Los Congos was like being wrapped in a big, cozy hug!
The rustic wooden decor and open-air seating created a warm and lively vibe.
Plus, the gentle trickle of water from a nearby fountain gave the whole place a downright soothing soundtrack.
This is a haven for locals and travellers looking to enjoy scrumptious grub and good company.
Let’s talk about the staff—my quack, they were terrific!
They treated me like royalty from the moment I splashed through the door!
Their genuine smiles and enthusiastic service made me feel like a superstar.
They were eager to share their recommendations and made me feel like I was in the hands of culinary wizards!
Since I arrived bright and early, breakfast was calling my name!
One of my humans dove into a traditional Costa Rican omelet. It was pure magical deliciousness!
Each bite had his taste buds singing with joy!
With a satisfied belly, he was already daydreaming about my next visit to explore their lunch menu.
And, oh boy, did he return! A few days later, we flapped from Playa Bendera for a late lunch with my beak practically watering!
The star of the show? A whole fried fish dinner that was out of this world!
The fresh catch was perfectly seasoned. In addition, it was served with giant prawns, crispy fries, and farm-fresh veggies. The flaky, tender fish melted in my beak like a dream!
But wait! I couldn’t paddle away without indulging in their steak dinner. What a treat for my taste buds!
The steak was expertly grilled with a beautiful char on the outside and oh-so-tender on the inside. It was a culinary masterpiece, paired with those giant prawns, roasted veggies, and a scrumptious chimichurri sauce. Each bite made me feel like the luckiest little rubber duck in the universe!
As I floated away from Los Congos, my heart and belly were brimming with joy—the inviting ambiance, friendly staff, and mouthwatering food made for an unforgettable experience.
Whether you’re a local or passing through Orotina, you must make a splash at Los Congos!
Ahoy, fellow adventurers! Bob here ready to quack about my latest joyous jaunt at the Jolly Roger Restaurant.
This lovely spot is tucked away in the enchanting rainforest near Dominical, Costa Rica!
Perched on the mountainside, the Jolly Roger offers views that make even the grumpiest geese smile.
I settled on the edge of a table, gazing down at the sprawling rainforest canopy. It spread below me like a lush green quilt. The palm leaves swayed in the breeze. Additionally, the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean sparkled in the sunlight just beyond the trees.
I felt like I was at the world’s most breathtaking front-row seat!
A pair of magnificent macaws swooped overhead, flaunting their bright red and blue feathers like nature’s very own confetti!
Toucans chimed in with cheeky calls and created a symphony.
The mood at Jolly Roger was electric, and the sounds of hungry nature wrapped around me like a warm embrace.
Jolly Roger’s claim to fame as the ultimate jungle Wing Bar boasts 23 flavorful wing creations.
But wings are not alone on the North American style menu:
Mouthwatering burgers,
vegan cauliflower wings, legendary Storm fries,
fresh salads,
and even “jungle” pizza
All delight any palate.
When it’s time to wash down this deliciousness, I wholeheartedly recommend their house margaritas or delightful cocktails.
A tantalizing blend of the freshest coconut water, piña-whiz magic, and a splash of rum, all swirled together to create a drink that feels like a dreamy float through paradise!
Seriously, one sip had me feeling like I was lounging on a fluffy cloud.
They certainly do not hold back on the rum!
As I nestled in, soaking up the ambiance and the as-fabulous-as-it-gets views, gratitude washed over me like the ocean waves below.
The Jolly Roger is not just a restaurant. Instead, it’s a magical experience where nature’s beauty dances with culinary creativity.
If you find yourself in Dominical, do not miss the chance to land at the Jolly Roger Restaurant.
With over 17 years of deliciousness, an awe-inspiring view, and staff that brings the fun, it’s an adventure that can’t be beaten!
