  • Monkey Jungle – Miami, Florida

    Monkey Jungle – Miami, Florida

Quack, quack, and hello, my feathered friends! It’s your favorite rubbery adventurer, Bob, and boy, do I have a splashtastic tale to tell you about one of Miami’s quirkiest gems – the Monkey Jungle!

Located in the lush suburbs of Miami, this vibrant, wild paradise is easily accessible by car or public transport. Picture this: cheeky monkeys swing through the trees, and I bob around, soaking in all the fun!

Let’s travel back to 1933, when a visionary named Joseph DuMond dreamed up this monkey wonderland. His mission? To create a vibrant tropical retreat where monkeys could frolic freely while curious humans marvel at their antics! Imagine a place where colorful primates leap and bound.

Now, here’s a fun twist: In the 1950s, Monkey Jungle became a superstar in the world of conservation! It launched breeding programs for some of the cutest critters – the adorable squirrel monkeys and the clever capuchins. I love how they work to protect our furry friends while educating all the curious visitors about wildlife. It makes my little rubber heart burst with joy!

Over the years, Monkey Jungle has seen quite a few changes, but one thing’s for sure: it has always stayed true to its mission of conservation and education. When Joseph DuMond floated off in the 1970s, his family stepped in to keep his dream alive. Then, in the late ’90s, the park found new guardians who infused fresh excitement and ideas. I zoom around in my little pond, soaking up all that positive energy!

Today, Monkey Jungle is buzzing with life! It’s home to over 300 spirited primates, and there’s no shortage of fun for everyone who visits!

From the playful antics on “Monkey Island” – where monkeys leap and play like there’s no tomorrow – to guided educational tours filled with fascinating facts, there’s something for every animal lover and adventure seeker.

Imagine me happily floating along, watching those silly monkeys play tag; it’s a riot of fun and laughter!

As the name suggests, the park focuses on the monkeying around (pun intended), but more residents add additional life to Monkey Jungle.

Just when I thought I had no more friends to discover, I spotted a giant lizard hanging out with the monkeys while colourful fish danced in the pond.

A little further into the labyrinth, friendly turtles were busy eating lunch while a sleepy lizard bathed in the sun.

I even visited with various feathered friends of many colours who squawked to get my attention.

The park collaborates with various organizations to protect endangered species and share the magical message of biodiversity with everyone. As I float along, my little duck heart swells with pride for the hard work that goes into keeping our planet happy and healthy for all creatures great and small. It’s truly inspiring to see such dedication to our natural world.

So, whether you’re a fellow rubber duck, a monkey enthusiast, or someone looking for a wild day out, Monkey Jungle promises an unforgettable connection to nature. As I drift in my pond, I can’t help but look forward to the laughter, learning, and love that this extraordinary haven will continue to inspire for years to come! Quack on, and let the adventures begin!

  • Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Quack!  Bob here, ready to share the exciting story of the Cape Florida Lighthouse, tucked away in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.  From my cozy spot bobbing in the waves, I’ve discovered the towering lighthouse’s fascinating journey through history, and it’s a tale filled with adventure!

The Cape Florida Lighthouse, completed in 1825, is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County.  It’s a testament to resilience, having weathered countless storms and illuminated myriad journeys.  Imagine the sight of ships sailing through the shimmering waters of Biscayne Bay, guided safely home by the warm glow of this iconic beacon!

In the early years, the lighthouse faced its fair share of challenges, including damage during the Second Seminole War.  The dedicated lighthouse keeper, a brave soul, battled the elements and war tensions.  In 1860, the lighthouse underwent a remarkable transformation, rising to a towering 95 feet and adorned with a new brick facade and a shiny Fresnel lens, making its light visible from miles away.

Throughout the years, the lighthouse faced the wear and tear of both nature and time, leading to periods of neglect.  However, some dedicated folks stepped in during the 1970s to restore this historical gem, ensuring it could continue shining brightly for generations.  The restoration did not stop there.

The final restoration was completed in 1996, bringing the structure as close to the 1855 standards as possible.  Today, it’s a stunning sight within the state park, drawing visitors eager to walk in the footsteps of history.

Can you picture the keeper climbing the narrow, winding stairs to light the lantern each night?  I certainly can!  But, alas, the astute lighthouse attendant caught me trying to sneak in, noticing that I did not meet the height requirement, so no climbing for me.  However, the wonderful man allowed me to peek inside with my humans.

The lighthouse played a strategic role during the Civil War, with the area buzzing as Union and Confederate forces plotted their next moves.

Adjacent to the lighthouse is the charming cottage of the lighthouse keeper.  This quaint building is a treasure trove of stories, preserving the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to keeping the lighthouse aglow.

The keeper likely shared unbelievable stories over dinner with friends who would occasionally make the arduous journey to visit!  Just imagine them gathered around a hearty meal in the cozy keeper’s cottage, sharing laughter and tales of the sea while the delicious smells wafted through the air.

You can also realize the moments of solitude as the keeper and his family sat around the fire playing games and crafting before retiring in the evenings.

And, let’s not forget the most essential building near the cottage….even lighthouse keepers need a place to read the newspaper!

Today, families and adventurers flock to the park, marvelling at the picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean.  They joyfully climb the narrow stairs of the lighthouse, feeling the thrill of reaching the top!

So, when exploring Southern Florida, take a little detour through Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park to appreciate the Cape Florida Lighthouse, a true beacon of history, hope, and adventure.  And if you catch sight of a cheerful rubber duck bobbing along in the surf, it’s probably me, Bob, soaking in the wonders of this incredible landmark!  Quack, quack!

Experience a recreational boater’s paradise!  Whether you enjoy parasailing and waterskiing or prefer boating and fishing, this park has it all.  Don’t have a boat?  No problem!  Many casual fishing enthusiasts enjoy casting a line from the shore.

And guess what?  Bill Baggs is the ultimate picnic spot!  Families gather here under shady palm trees, setting up delicious spreads filled with snacks that make my beak water.  I love the sounds of laughter and joy as kids play games, their happy chirps mixing with the gentle sounds of the waves.  Just imagine the scents of fresh sandwiches and fruit wafting through the air—quack-tastic!

  • Coral Castle – Homestead, Florida

    Coral Castle – Homestead, Florida

Quack, quack!  Bob here, and I have a tale as fabulous as a sun-soaked Florida day! My journey led me to Coral Castle, a magical place in Homestead, which left me floating with wonder.

Once upon a time, in a land of sunshine and warm breezes, there stood a very peculiar castle, all made of coral! This isn’t just any ol’ castle. It was crafted by the hands of a single genius—Edward Leedskalnin, a true character whose story is as intriguing as a feather in the wind!  The uniqueness of Coral Castle is a story waiting to be discovered.

As I bobbed along with my human companions, we found ourselves at the entrance, home to a charming little gift shop—a store full of trinkets and treasures—perfect for a rubber duck like me! But I was poised to explore the absolute marvel—the Coral Castle.

When we approached, my eyes widened (as wide as a rubber duck’s eyes can get)! The towering coral formations were a sight like nothing I had seen before.

Our knowledgeable guide launched into Edward’s legendary saga.  Picture this: a Latvian immigrant with a heart heavy enough to sink a ship, all because his fiancée Agnes jilted him right before their wedding day! Talk about a love story with a twist!

In 1923, Edward turned his heartbreak into a monumental love letter.  Working under the soft glow of the moonlight (how poetic!), he carved and moved massive coral blocks—some weighing as much as me and all my duck friends combined!

Seriously, how did this guy do it?  Was he secretly a superhero? Some folks say he used ancient techniques, while others think he had a sprinkle of magic in his toolbox. I imagined him there, all 5 feet of him, working diligently while I floated nearby, cheering him on in spirit! I think I will buy the book and have my humans read it to me so I can discover the mystery.

But in the meantime, as we wandered through the enchanting stone corridors, I watched my humans marvel at his creations.  There were stunning walls, intricate archways, and a sundial that could tell its own stories.

My favorite was the Moon Fountain, where water danced gracefully as it reflected the sunlight—what a romantic touch!  Edward was trying to send a wink to Agnes from beyond, a gesture that still resonates with visitors today.

My companions snapped photos, laughed, and oohed and aahed at the marvelous details Edward had carved. Each stone told a tale of dedication and love, turning sorrow into a legacy that would make even a rubber duck’s heart swell with pride.  The air was thick with magic and emotion as shadows frolicked across the coral walls, and I couldn’t help but feel Edward’s spirit—a testament to the strength of the human heart, lingering in the whispers of the wind.

Even though Edward took his final bow in 1951, his creation remains—a quirky monument to resilience and creativity.  Coral Castle stands as a testament to how love, even when lost, can inspire beautiful creations.  While I floated there, I contemplated the mysteries of life and love, feeling a profound connection to Edward, who turned his heartbreak into an extraordinary castle of dreams.

So, here’s the quack of the day: If you ever find yourself near Homestead, don’t miss the chance to visit Coral Castle. It’s a place where magic, love, and a little rubber duck like me can all find a home among the tales of the heart!

  • Overseas Highway – Florida City to Key West, Florida

Overseas Highway – Florida City to Key West, Florida

Hey there, fellow adventure seekers! Strap on your helmets and prepare to rev up because Bob is back to share the thrill of my epic motorcycle ride from Florida City to the enchanting Key West! Perched on the back of my trusty steed, Goldie the Goldwing, I could feel the sun warming my rubbery body as a salty breeze ruffled my little wings. But as I awaited my humans, Goldie and I attracted some future ride enthusiasts at our hotel.  What a great way to start the day.

Then, with Goldie’s engine roaring like a lion, we were off on a journey that promised heart-pounding thrills and awe-inspiring sights!

As Florida City faded behind us, the Overseas Highway unfolded like a ribbon of adventure. My human pals, Rick and Linda, adjusted their sunglasses, their excitement palpable.

The first stop was Key Largo, the largest Florida Keys, where the crystal-clear turquoise waters beckoned us. I could almost taste the adventure as I imagined diving into the vibrant coral reefs, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of fish.

The beauty of the Keys was genuinely inspiring, even from the back of a speeding motorcycle!

We zoomed through the charming towns of Islamorada and Marathon, each with unique charm.  Picture-perfect pastel cottages, swaying palm trees, and the tantalizing aroma of fresh seafood in the air! I spotted quirky art galleries and inviting boutiques along the way, and my little rubber heart sang with joy at the discovery of the eclectic mix of the islands.

Then came the awe-inspiring Seven-Mile Bridge, a marvel of engineering stretching over the glistening waters. As we sped onto the bridge, wind whipping through my feathers, I gazed at the old bridge alongside us, a weathered giant from days gone by. I could almost hear the whispers of history in the air as humans strolled along, bundled up but enchanted by the expansive ocean views stretching far beyond the horizon.

As we finally neared Key West, the excitement was palpable. Known for its lively spirit and vibrant streets, it was the heartbeat of the Keys! We parked Goldie near the Southernmost Point Buoy, and I dove right into the festive atmosphere, mingling with folks snapping pictures by this iconic marker—only 90 miles from Cuba! The culture here is a delightful tapestry of colors, flavors, and sounds, much like a pot of gold waiting at the end of the road.

After a whirlwind couple of hours soaking in Key West’s charm, it was time to head back to Florida City. But not before a pit stop for dinner in Islamorada!

We discovered a charming oceanside restaurant where the sound of the waves and the smell of the sea set the perfect backdrop for our meal. I treated myself to imaginary fishy delights while Rick and Linda indulged in fresh catch dinners.

With that delightful meal fueling our spirits, we cruised back along the highway, the wind in our hair (or feathers, in my case). My heart was bursting with gratitude for the incredible memories we made in Key West and along the way.

As I perched on Goldie, I couldn’t help but dream of future adventures. More rides, more laughter, and countless new stories to share awaited us on the open road.

With my head held high, I quacked with excitement for wherever the next adventure would take us. Until then, keep those feathers fluffed and the wheels turning! I’d love to hear about your motorcycle adventures. Share your stories in the comments!

My waddle took me straight to a local hotspot that’s nothing short of legendary: the Key Lime Pie Co. Let me tell you, a visit here is like embarking on a sweet adventure, a delightful discovery waiting to be made!

I was greeted by a dazzling display of key lime pies showcased like treasures in a gallery.  The vibrant green filling glistened under the lights, and each pie was crowned with a cloud of fluffy whipped cream.  The sweet aroma of freshly baked crusts filled the air, and the tangy scent of the key lime was unmistakable.

As I floated around, I overheard some humans chatting about the history of this delightful concoction.  This iconic pie, made from tiny tart limes that thrive in the sunshine, came to life in Key West in the 19th century.

Its tangy sweetness and creamy goodness have made it an absolute favorite among locals and visitors.  I couldn’t help but watch the happy faces of people as they dug into their slices, each bite seeming to transport them to dessert paradise.

Finally, I managed to snag my slice!  As I relished that key lime goodness, I couldn’t help but close my eyes and let out a contented quack.  The zesty flavor was like a sunny hug from Key West itself, and I had to resist the urge to dive into the chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick that was tempting me from across the room. My, oh my! The joy radiating from those indulging in that treat was truly infectious!

But the magic of Key West is not just about the pie.  It’s the atmosphere that swirls around you—rich with history, culture, and the spirit of the community.  Every moment I spent there made my little rubber heart swell with joy.  From the vibrant streets to the tantalizing tastes, I soaked it all in like a sponge… or, you know, a rubber duck!

Every corner offered a new delight—the laughter of locals, the strumming of guitars, and that irresistible aroma of key lime pie wafting through the air, creating an atmosphere that felt like a never-ending celebration.

One of my favourite stops on this whimsical journey was the iconic Willie T’s! This bar is a true gem of Key West, famous for its vibrant and inviting vibe, which is sure to get your heart racing.

I settled into the vibrant scene, surrounded by a delightful mix of tourists and locals, indulging in their tales of escapades beneath the golden Florida sun. I could practically taste the joy buzzing in the air.

As I bobbed along (no barstool needed for this little duck!), I overheard heroic tales of fishing conquests, sunset sails, and the magical “green flash” that lights up the sky just as the sun kisses the horizon goodnight. My little rubber heart swelled with excitement to be part of such a pulsating scene, even if only as a cheerful spectator.

Alas, my humans had a packed schedule, and the clock seemed to tick too quickly for this adventure-loving duck. I couldn’t linger long enough to snag a barstool, join in the merriment, or add my signature to one of those illustrious dollar bills. But fear not! This isn’t the last you’ll hear from me. I will return to soak in the vibes and leave my mark on Willie T’s Wall of Fame, a tradition where visitors sign a dollar bill and pin it to the wall, creating a colourful mosaic of memories!

  • Southernmost Point – Key West, Florida

Southernmost Point – Key West, Florida

Hello, fellow adventurers! Today, I am sharing my latest splashing escapade in the unique and vibrant Key West, Florida. This paradise is home to the renowned Southernmost Point Buoy, a colourful landmark with a rich history that has drawn visitors from all corners of the globe for well over 100 years.

My adventure begins with a dive into the rich history of Key West. Before the influx of tourists, this area was inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta tribes. The name “Key West” is derived from the Spanish “Cayo Hueso,” which means “Bone Key,” a reference to the numerous bones discovered here. In the early 19th century, Key West emerged as a significant center for shipwreck salvage, cigar production, and sponge fishing, marking its historical importance. Surprisingly, by the mid-1800s, it was the wealthiest city in Florida!

As I floated through the historic streets, I was captivated by the unique architecture surrounding me that spanned many historical years of Key West.

One of the standout structures is the Edwardo H. Gato House, a stunning example of Queen Anne architecture dating back to 1894. Edwardo H. Gato, Sr.. was not just a historical figure; he was a local leader and passionate Cuban patriot who advocated for figures like José Martí in the fight for independence from Spain. The Edwardo H. Gato House stands as a testament to his legacy, a living connection to the past. Upon his arrival in Key West in 1874, he transformed the area from a simple fishing village into a vibrant center, driving the Cuban tobacco industry forward—his cigar factory even became the largest in Key West!

Just a hop, skip, and a splash down the street, you’ll find the charming Harris House. Picture this: on April 2, 1891, two notable families—the Harris and the Curry—came together in a union that felt like a whimsical wave crashing together. Here, J. Vining Harris, Jr. married Florida E. Curry, merging two influential families of the late 19th century Key West scene, whose legacy continues to shape the history of this vibrant city.

In 1906, Vining made a savvy purchase of property on South Street for a mere $3,500. He built three adorable Queen Anne-style homes, like little boats bobbing in a sunny harbour—perfect for family gatherings!

Today, the Harris House shines as a cherished gem, blending history with family legacy. Its place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983 speaks volumes about its importance to Key West’s rich narrative.

A beautiful statue, a visual masterpiece dedicated to the unforgettable Bishop Albert Kee, is not far down the road. Kee, a local legend until his passing in 2003, was the friendly face at the Southernmost Point, selling beautiful fluted conch shells to every passerby. He and his dad spent over 50 years, a testament to their unwavering dedication, welcoming visitors with conch shell demonstrations and showcasing the rich multicultural vibe that makes this island unique.

And what could be the cause of the excited gathering of humans? They were all making their way to the Southernmost Point marker, just like me! Erected in 1983, this buoy marks the southernmost point of the continental U.S., a mere 90 miles from the shores of Cuba. It’s not just a buoy; it’s a symbol of history and connection. It has become an essential stop for travellers eager to grab that iconic photo with the vibrant red, yellow, and black buoy. I’ve witnessed countless tourists pose triumphantly, arms raised high as if they’re closest to the edge of the world!

Today, Key West stands as a unique blend of culture, festivity, and undeniable charm. Its streets are adorned with pastel-hued conch-style houses, and the air is filled with the alluring aroma of fresh seafood. This is a place that is truly one-of-a-kind, a unique travel destination that promises an adventure like no other. Just imagine this little rubber duck floating through all the laughter, joy, and history—what a quack-tastic adventure!

In the bubbling beginnings of Habanos, something magical was simmering—delicious flavors just waiting for a splash of excitement!  That’s when Eduardo, the American with a heart full of Cuban spirit, and Jorge, the culinary wizard from Cuba, decided to team up.  Together, they set off on a wild adventure to reinvent this tasty treasure. With their love for all things delicious and a sprinkle of respect for Cuba’s colorful culture, they transformed into a fabulous fiesta of Cuba’s culinary delights!

I decided to indulge in two truly knock-your-flippers-off dishes: the conch steak dinner and the majestic lobster tail dinner. Both were reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food served.

Let’s start with the conch steak—it was an absolute showstopper!  Tender and perfectly cooked, the seasoning was a burst of brightness that let the conch’s natural flavor shine like a sunbeam on the water. It came with a colorful side of crispy fries, plantains, and yuca fries—oh my quack, what a delightful mix of textures! Each bite was like a tropical party in my beak.

  • Port Charlotte to Gulf Beaches Area – Florida

Port Charlotte to Gulf Beaches Area – Florida

Quack, quack! Feathered friends, get ready to buckle up for an adventure like no other! It’s Bob here, your trusty sidekick, and I’m thrilled to share the exhilarating day I had cruising the stunning roads of Florida with the legendary Badger Crew!

On Monday, February 17, Sonny (da Badger), the wonderful Angie (Momma Badger), delightful Debby (GMA Badger), and the ever-wise Gene (GPA Badger) took my humans and me on a day that was nothing short of extraordinary!

Our journey kicked off in sunny Port Charlotte, where the air was electric with the thrill of adventure and a hint of that delicious, salty sea breeze. The stunning Florida scenery, with its vibrant colors and picturesque landscapes, was a sight to behold. With spirits high, we set out from our meeting spot, eager to soak in the sights.

Our first stop was in nearby Punta Gorda, where we were lucky enough to find a hidden treasure: Fresco!  This charming café served up coffee that could flow through rivers and pastries that were practically legendary.

We feasted on decadent quiche and sweet treats while catching up and sharing laughter. With satisfied bellies, we were ready to embrace the open road!

As we revved up our engines, I nestled comfortably on the back of Goldie. The sun warmed my feathery form as we took off, and the exhilarating roar of the bikes blended perfectly with the sound of ocean waves in the background. Riding along the coastline was pure magic—each turn revealing breathtaking views of glistening waters that danced joyfully in the sunlight. I couldn’t help but quack in delight as the wind ruffled my rubbery feathers!

While cruising, we couldn’t ignore the aftermath of the recent hurricane. It was striking and humbling to see the remnants of nature’s fury, with boarded-up buildings and scattered palm trees telling tales of resilience. We took moments to pause and reflect at various locations along the beach, witnessing the unwavering spirit of the community as volunteers worked tirelessly to clean up the area. It was a profound reminder of how strong and united people can be in the face of adversity.

Continuing our journey, we stumbled across incredible sand peaks formed by the hurricane’s fierce winds. These majestic structures stood tall like nature’s very own sculptures, and we pulled over to take a little break. The Badgers shared fascinating stories steeped in the area’s history before the storms, enlightening us to how even majestic houses were transformed from white to tan by the sand. I floated around, striking my best rubber duck poses for the photos—this was one for the memory books!

Our next stop was the vibrant Fort Myers Beach!

As we parked our motorcycles, I hopped off, ready to explore the lively scene.

The beach was abuzz with laughter, music, and the soothing sound of waves crashing.

We took a stroll along the shore, feeling the warm sand between our toes.

Of course, I couldn’t resist capturing a quacky selfie against the breathtaking ocean backdrop from the iconic Fort Myers Beach Bridge!

After all that exploring, our appetites kicked in like a well-tuned engine.  We headed to Smokin’ Oyster Brewery, where the tantalizing aromas of delectable spices filled the air.  We indulged in mouthwatering seafood and refreshing beverages, and I bobbed along to the lively music, soaking in every moment.  Laughter echoed through our meal, making it a perfect opportunity to relax and recharge for the journey ahead.

With our hearts full of joy and our bellies satisfied, we explored a little more in Fort Myers Beach.

Eventually, we headed to the bikes and hopped back on for the ride to the Badger’s den.

Now, what would a great motorcycle ride be without a few traffic jams?  Even baking in the heat as we worked our way through traffic was enjoyable for this rubber duck that hails from the chilly Winterpeg, Manitoba.

As we rolled back into Port Charlotte, I couldn’t help but reflect on the wonderful day we had. A huge thank you to the Badgers for being the most fantastic biking buddies a rubber duck could ask for! Your expert navigation and care kept us together and safe, ensuring we all shared in this beautiful adventure. I truly felt special and cherished, and it’s clear that with the Badger Crew, every ride is a memorable one. Our bond and shared experiences make us more than just fellow riders – they make us a family of adventurers.

So, until our next escapade, keep your feathers fluffy and your adventures wild! Quack on, my friends!
