  • White Horse, St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba

White Horse, St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba

Hey there, friends! As a local resident and a frequent visitor to the lovely waters of St. Francois Xavier in Manitoba, I’ve stumbled upon a fascinating tale about a place known as White Horse Plain. So, grab a floating snack and let’s dive into this captivating story!

So, picture this: The year is 1824, and a little hamlet named Grantown is born, just 18 miles west of where I bob along today, which is now known as St. Francois Xavier. This charming spot lies right on the edge of the Canadian prairies, and they say it’s the “Gateway to the West.” It’s got a history thicker than a duck’s layer of rubber!

Long before the settlers arrived, this land was a hub of activity for the Indigenous peoples, especially the Crees, known for their splendid celebrations and gatherings.

But let me tell you about the legend that gives this plain its name. It’s a tale passed down for centuries—way older than me! In the 17th century, the fierce Sioux pushed the Cree further north towards Hudson Bay. The Crees found themselves in a tough spot, fighting for survival and food.

Enter the white men from Hudson Bay, who brought guns for trading! Suddenly, the tables turned! The Crees transformed from desperate to daring, becoming the ultimate warriors, sending the Sioux packing. But don’t think it was peaceful just yet; oh no! The Sioux were still lurking about, making sure to keep an eye on their powerful neighbours.

Then one bright summer in the 1690s, the drama escalated at a camp along the Assiniboine River. The Assiniboine chief had a stunning daughter, and two handsome suitors came to vie for her affection: a Cree chief and a Sioux chief. Both were ready to charm, but the Cree brought along a sensational gift—a magnificent white horse, as pure as freshly fallen snow!

This wasn’t just any horse—it was a “Blanco Diablo,” a renowned breed from Mexico that could outpace anything on the prairie! Can you imagine the excitement? The father of the beautiful daughter was practically quacking in delight!

But hang on; this one has twists just like any good story! A powerful medicine man within the Assiniboine tribe raised a ruckus. He wasn’t too keen on the Cree joining their family tree. “It’s a disgrace!” he yelled. He was determined to stir up trouble, insisting they shouldn’t mix their blood with their foes.

Despite the medicine man’s protests, the wedding plans continued as the Sioux chief was off on a war expedition. But the medicine man had tricks up his sleeve! He secretly sent word to the Sioux chief about the impending marriage. Talk about a plot twist!

On the big day, the Cree chief arrived, dressed up and leading his beautiful white horse, but chaos erupted just when the festivities began! Dust clouds rolled in as the vengeful Sioux chief charged into the scene, warriors in tow!

The Assiniboine chief quickly returned the horse to his new son-in-law and told him to take his new bride and flee to safety.  So off they went with the groom galloping on his grey stallion and the bride proudly racing ahead of him on the prized white horse.

I might be a simple floating duck, but I tell you, the tension on that prairie must have been thicker than my rubbery exterior! Cries of excitement and panic filled the air, and I could imagine the wild splashes and reactions as the festivities turned into a showdown!

The Sioux chief was not finished. He wanted the revenge he came for, so he tracked down the newlyweds and shot them off their horses. Legend has it that they were able to catch the grey horse the groom was riding, but the famous white steed ran off, never to be caught.

For many years that followed, now and then, someone would spot this great white horse on the prairie, and thus the area became known as White Horse Plain.

Whether the marriage happened or chaos took the stage, one thing’s for sure: the legend of White Horse Plain is as thrilling as a ride downstream. And isn’t it incredible how stories like mine float along the water, splash through time? Until next time, keep your wings flapping and your tales flowing!

  • Bothwell Cheese Factory, New Bothwell, Manitoba

Bothwell Cheese Factory, New Bothwell, Manitoba

Hello, fellow food enthusiasts! Today I’m floating through rural Manitoba, specifically the charming village of New Bothwell. I had the absolute pleasure of waddling into the iconic Bothwell Cheese Factory. Let me tell you, it was a quack-tastic experience filled with rich history and delightful aromas!

Founded in 1936 by Frank Giesbrecht and Bernhard Dueck, this cheese factory started as a minor miracle where local farmers could turn their excess milk into something scrumptious. The early days were a testament to the dedication of the farmers who lugged heavy cans of milk, earning just half a cent per pound, and the workers who endured long shifts in a toasty cheese-making plant. Their dedication is the foundation of the Bothwell Cheese Factory we know today!

Fast forward to the present, and Bothwell has blossomed into one of Canada’s premier cheese makers, still holding that artisan spirit close to its heart. The factory has grown from just three employees to over 60, maintaining its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. It processes an impressive 24,000 to 29,000 kilograms of cheese daily, using 100% fresh local milk from nearby farms. Now that’s cheese-making magic!

As I floated around the delightful cheese shop, my feathery heart filled with joy at the sight of the vast selection. With 25 varieties of cheese—ranging from rich cheddar to unique lactose-free options and even fresh curds—there’s something for every cheese lover. Picture local kids, giggling and running with paper bags full of squeaky cheese curds; I could almost hear their joyous laughter!

Not wanting to miss out, my humans picked up a selection of local goodies. First on the list? The cheese curds! Oh, my quack, they were the perfect texture—squeaky and fresh! I may have indulged just a tad more than I should have (who can resist?) as I soaked up the mouthwatering atmosphere.

Next came the perogies. We couldn’t resist snagging two types: cottage cheese and potato bacon. These extra-large dumplings, once fried to golden perfection, sent me into a flavour frenzy—each bite was a party in my little rubber belly!

And there was more! We grabbed some locally made pasta to elevate our next family dinner into a grand feast.

I hovered anxiously over a jar of sour cherry jam that caught my eye. It wasn’t just jam but a sweet yet tangy creation that danced across my taste buds! Just imagine slathering it on warm artisanal bread—now that’s what I call a treat!

As I drifted back towards the door, I realized that Bothwell Cheese is more than just a factory; it’s a community hub celebrating tradition and innovation. If you ever find yourself in New Bothwell, this cheese factory should top your must-visit list. It’s a quackin’ good time filled with warmth, history, and flavours that will make your taste buds sing!

So, if you’re ever in the area, float on in. Support this wonderful establishment where heritage meets modern-day delights. Until next time, my friends—keep it cheesy!

  • Monkey Jungle – Miami, Florida

    Monkey Jungle – Miami, Florida

Quack, quack, and hello, my feathered friends! It’s your favorite rubbery adventurer, Bob, and boy, do I have a splashtastic tale to tell you about one of Miami’s quirkiest gems – the Monkey Jungle!

Located in the lush suburbs of Miami, this vibrant, wild paradise is easily accessible by car or public transport. Picture this: cheeky monkeys swing through the trees, and I bob around, soaking in all the fun!

Let’s travel back to 1933, when a visionary named Joseph DuMond dreamed up this monkey wonderland. His mission? To create a vibrant tropical retreat where monkeys could frolic freely while curious humans marvel at their antics! Imagine a place where colorful primates leap and bound.

Now, here’s a fun twist: In the 1950s, Monkey Jungle became a superstar in the world of conservation! It launched breeding programs for some of the cutest critters – the adorable squirrel monkeys and the clever capuchins. I love how they work to protect our furry friends while educating all the curious visitors about wildlife. It makes my little rubber heart burst with joy!

Over the years, Monkey Jungle has seen quite a few changes, but one thing’s for sure: it has always stayed true to its mission of conservation and education. When Joseph DuMond floated off in the 1970s, his family stepped in to keep his dream alive. Then, in the late ’90s, the park found new guardians who infused fresh excitement and ideas. I zoom around in my little pond, soaking up all that positive energy!

Today, Monkey Jungle is buzzing with life! It’s home to over 300 spirited primates, and there’s no shortage of fun for everyone who visits!

From the playful antics on “Monkey Island” – where monkeys leap and play like there’s no tomorrow – to guided educational tours filled with fascinating facts, there’s something for every animal lover and adventure seeker.

Imagine me happily floating along, watching those silly monkeys play tag; it’s a riot of fun and laughter!

As the name suggests, the park focuses on the monkeying around (pun intended), but more residents add additional life to Monkey Jungle.

Just when I thought I had no more friends to discover, I spotted a giant lizard hanging out with the monkeys while colourful fish danced in the pond.

A little further into the labyrinth, friendly turtles were busy eating lunch while a sleepy lizard bathed in the sun.

I even visited with various feathered friends of many colours who squawked to get my attention.

The park collaborates with various organizations to protect endangered species and share the magical message of biodiversity with everyone. As I float along, my little duck heart swells with pride for the hard work that goes into keeping our planet happy and healthy for all creatures great and small. It’s truly inspiring to see such dedication to our natural world.

So, whether you’re a fellow rubber duck, a monkey enthusiast, or someone looking for a wild day out, Monkey Jungle promises an unforgettable connection to nature. As I drift in my pond, I can’t help but look forward to the laughter, learning, and love that this extraordinary haven will continue to inspire for years to come! Quack on, and let the adventures begin!

  • Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Quack!  Bob here, ready to share the exciting story of the Cape Florida Lighthouse, tucked away in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.  From my cozy spot bobbing in the waves, I’ve discovered the towering lighthouse’s fascinating journey through history, and it’s a tale filled with adventure!

The Cape Florida Lighthouse, completed in 1825, is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County.  It’s a testament to resilience, having weathered countless storms and illuminated myriad journeys.  Imagine the sight of ships sailing through the shimmering waters of Biscayne Bay, guided safely home by the warm glow of this iconic beacon!

In the early years, the lighthouse faced its fair share of challenges, including damage during the Second Seminole War.  The dedicated lighthouse keeper, a brave soul, battled the elements and war tensions.  In 1860, the lighthouse underwent a remarkable transformation, rising to a towering 95 feet and adorned with a new brick facade and a shiny Fresnel lens, making its light visible from miles away.

Throughout the years, the lighthouse faced the wear and tear of both nature and time, leading to periods of neglect.  However, some dedicated folks stepped in during the 1970s to restore this historical gem, ensuring it could continue shining brightly for generations.  The restoration did not stop there.

The final restoration was completed in 1996, bringing the structure as close to the 1855 standards as possible.  Today, it’s a stunning sight within the state park, drawing visitors eager to walk in the footsteps of history.

Can you picture the keeper climbing the narrow, winding stairs to light the lantern each night?  I certainly can!  But, alas, the astute lighthouse attendant caught me trying to sneak in, noticing that I did not meet the height requirement, so no climbing for me.  However, the wonderful man allowed me to peek inside with my humans.

The lighthouse played a strategic role during the Civil War, with the area buzzing as Union and Confederate forces plotted their next moves.

Adjacent to the lighthouse is the charming cottage of the lighthouse keeper.  This quaint building is a treasure trove of stories, preserving the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to keeping the lighthouse aglow.

The keeper likely shared unbelievable stories over dinner with friends who would occasionally make the arduous journey to visit!  Just imagine them gathered around a hearty meal in the cozy keeper’s cottage, sharing laughter and tales of the sea while the delicious smells wafted through the air.

You can also realize the moments of solitude as the keeper and his family sat around the fire playing games and crafting before retiring in the evenings.

And, let’s not forget the most essential building near the cottage….even lighthouse keepers need a place to read the newspaper!

Today, families and adventurers flock to the park, marvelling at the picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean.  They joyfully climb the narrow stairs of the lighthouse, feeling the thrill of reaching the top!

So, when exploring Southern Florida, take a little detour through Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park to appreciate the Cape Florida Lighthouse, a true beacon of history, hope, and adventure.  And if you catch sight of a cheerful rubber duck bobbing along in the surf, it’s probably me, Bob, soaking in the wonders of this incredible landmark!  Quack, quack!

Experience a recreational boater’s paradise!  Whether you enjoy parasailing and waterskiing or prefer boating and fishing, this park has it all.  Don’t have a boat?  No problem!  Many casual fishing enthusiasts enjoy casting a line from the shore.

And guess what?  Bill Baggs is the ultimate picnic spot!  Families gather here under shady palm trees, setting up delicious spreads filled with snacks that make my beak water.  I love the sounds of laughter and joy as kids play games, their happy chirps mixing with the gentle sounds of the waves.  Just imagine the scents of fresh sandwiches and fruit wafting through the air—quack-tastic!

  • Coral Castle – Homestead, Florida

    Coral Castle – Homestead, Florida

Quack, quack!  Bob here, and I have a tale as fabulous as a sun-soaked Florida day! My journey led me to Coral Castle, a magical place in Homestead, which left me floating with wonder.

Once upon a time, in a land of sunshine and warm breezes, there stood a very peculiar castle, all made of coral! This isn’t just any ol’ castle. It was crafted by the hands of a single genius—Edward Leedskalnin, a true character whose story is as intriguing as a feather in the wind!  The uniqueness of Coral Castle is a story waiting to be discovered.

As I bobbed along with my human companions, we found ourselves at the entrance, home to a charming little gift shop—a store full of trinkets and treasures—perfect for a rubber duck like me! But I was poised to explore the absolute marvel—the Coral Castle.

When we approached, my eyes widened (as wide as a rubber duck’s eyes can get)! The towering coral formations were a sight like nothing I had seen before.

Our knowledgeable guide launched into Edward’s legendary saga.  Picture this: a Latvian immigrant with a heart heavy enough to sink a ship, all because his fiancée Agnes jilted him right before their wedding day! Talk about a love story with a twist!

In 1923, Edward turned his heartbreak into a monumental love letter.  Working under the soft glow of the moonlight (how poetic!), he carved and moved massive coral blocks—some weighing as much as me and all my duck friends combined!

Seriously, how did this guy do it?  Was he secretly a superhero? Some folks say he used ancient techniques, while others think he had a sprinkle of magic in his toolbox. I imagined him there, all 5 feet of him, working diligently while I floated nearby, cheering him on in spirit! I think I will buy the book and have my humans read it to me so I can discover the mystery.

But in the meantime, as we wandered through the enchanting stone corridors, I watched my humans marvel at his creations.  There were stunning walls, intricate archways, and a sundial that could tell its own stories.

My favorite was the Moon Fountain, where water danced gracefully as it reflected the sunlight—what a romantic touch!  Edward was trying to send a wink to Agnes from beyond, a gesture that still resonates with visitors today.

My companions snapped photos, laughed, and oohed and aahed at the marvelous details Edward had carved. Each stone told a tale of dedication and love, turning sorrow into a legacy that would make even a rubber duck’s heart swell with pride.  The air was thick with magic and emotion as shadows frolicked across the coral walls, and I couldn’t help but feel Edward’s spirit—a testament to the strength of the human heart, lingering in the whispers of the wind.

Even though Edward took his final bow in 1951, his creation remains—a quirky monument to resilience and creativity.  Coral Castle stands as a testament to how love, even when lost, can inspire beautiful creations.  While I floated there, I contemplated the mysteries of life and love, feeling a profound connection to Edward, who turned his heartbreak into an extraordinary castle of dreams.

So, here’s the quack of the day: If you ever find yourself near Homestead, don’t miss the chance to visit Coral Castle. It’s a place where magic, love, and a little rubber duck like me can all find a home among the tales of the heart!

  • Southernmost Point – Key West, Florida

Southernmost Point – Key West, Florida

Hello, fellow adventurers! Today, I am sharing my latest splashing escapade in the unique and vibrant Key West, Florida. This paradise is home to the renowned Southernmost Point Buoy, a colourful landmark with a rich history that has drawn visitors from all corners of the globe for well over 100 years.

My adventure begins with a dive into the rich history of Key West. Before the influx of tourists, this area was inhabited by the Calusa and Tequesta tribes. The name “Key West” is derived from the Spanish “Cayo Hueso,” which means “Bone Key,” a reference to the numerous bones discovered here. In the early 19th century, Key West emerged as a significant center for shipwreck salvage, cigar production, and sponge fishing, marking its historical importance. Surprisingly, by the mid-1800s, it was the wealthiest city in Florida!

As I floated through the historic streets, I was captivated by the unique architecture surrounding me that spanned many historical years of Key West.

One of the standout structures is the Edwardo H. Gato House, a stunning example of Queen Anne architecture dating back to 1894. Edwardo H. Gato, Sr.. was not just a historical figure; he was a local leader and passionate Cuban patriot who advocated for figures like José Martí in the fight for independence from Spain. The Edwardo H. Gato House stands as a testament to his legacy, a living connection to the past. Upon his arrival in Key West in 1874, he transformed the area from a simple fishing village into a vibrant center, driving the Cuban tobacco industry forward—his cigar factory even became the largest in Key West!

Just a hop, skip, and a splash down the street, you’ll find the charming Harris House. Picture this: on April 2, 1891, two notable families—the Harris and the Curry—came together in a union that felt like a whimsical wave crashing together. Here, J. Vining Harris, Jr. married Florida E. Curry, merging two influential families of the late 19th century Key West scene, whose legacy continues to shape the history of this vibrant city.

In 1906, Vining made a savvy purchase of property on South Street for a mere $3,500. He built three adorable Queen Anne-style homes, like little boats bobbing in a sunny harbour—perfect for family gatherings!

Today, the Harris House shines as a cherished gem, blending history with family legacy. Its place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983 speaks volumes about its importance to Key West’s rich narrative.

A beautiful statue, a visual masterpiece dedicated to the unforgettable Bishop Albert Kee, is not far down the road. Kee, a local legend until his passing in 2003, was the friendly face at the Southernmost Point, selling beautiful fluted conch shells to every passerby. He and his dad spent over 50 years, a testament to their unwavering dedication, welcoming visitors with conch shell demonstrations and showcasing the rich multicultural vibe that makes this island unique.

And what could be the cause of the excited gathering of humans? They were all making their way to the Southernmost Point marker, just like me! Erected in 1983, this buoy marks the southernmost point of the continental U.S., a mere 90 miles from the shores of Cuba. It’s not just a buoy; it’s a symbol of history and connection. It has become an essential stop for travellers eager to grab that iconic photo with the vibrant red, yellow, and black buoy. I’ve witnessed countless tourists pose triumphantly, arms raised high as if they’re closest to the edge of the world!

Today, Key West stands as a unique blend of culture, festivity, and undeniable charm. Its streets are adorned with pastel-hued conch-style houses, and the air is filled with the alluring aroma of fresh seafood. This is a place that is truly one-of-a-kind, a unique travel destination that promises an adventure like no other. Just imagine this little rubber duck floating through all the laughter, joy, and history—what a quack-tastic adventure!
