Columbia Restaurant – Ybor City, Florida

Hello, fellow adventurers!  Buckle up because today, I’m diving into the delightful and vibrant experience of the Columbia Restaurant, a dazzling gem nestled in the heart of Ybor City.  This isn’t just any restaurant; it’s a culinary landmark serving smiles and savoury delights since 1905!

What makes it even more remarkable is that it’s still in the loving hands of the Hernandez family—now in its fourth generation!  Picture this: a sprawling 52,000 square feet of enchanting dining space where you can cozy up with 1,700 fellow food lovers.  Break out the confetti because Columbia holds the title of Florida’s longest-standing restaurant—a true testament to dedication and community!

Walking into the Columbia is like stepping into a vibrant time machine.  The restaurant drips with culture and charm, celebrated for its stunning tile work and lively decor that whisper stories of a rich Cuban and Spanish heritage.  You can almost hear the echoes of the past as you stroll through its bustling halls!

Let’s chat about the incredible staff, especially the superstar Aaron!  His service was smooth, like a gentle stream, and his menu knowledge was impressive.  He made sure my visit was an unforgettable experience!

My journey began with a sizeable slice of Cuban bread.  Wow, was that a treat!  And then came the legendary 1905 Salad—if you think salads are boring, think again!  This salad is a legendary blend of fresh iceberg lettuce, zesty dressing, and flavorful olives, crafting a perfect harmony of taste and texture.  It has stood the test of time, remaining a beloved classic since day one!

I sipped on a Huckleberry Martini to wash down these delights—a refreshing burst of fruity goodness.  The twist of huckleberries gives this cocktail a unique flair and pairs marvellously with each dish.  Talk about a flavour adventure!

For the main event, the management team recommended the lobster cannelloni; let me tell you, it was pure magic on a plate!  These tender cannelloni were filled with succulent lobster and drizzled with a rich sauce that danced playfully on my taste buds.  Absolute bliss!

If comfort food calls your name, the Pollo Manchego is your answer.  Juicy, perfectly seasoned chicken topped with luscious melted Manchego cheese is like receiving a warm hug from the inside out—satisfying and utterly delightful.

Aaron expertly guided me through the wine selection, and I picked the Purgatori Red Blend Wine.  This full-bodied blend is an absolute must-try for wine enthusiasts!  Bursting with bold dark fruit flavours, it perfectly complements the savoury dishes and elevates the dining experience.

To wrap up my fantastic meal, I was treated to a lively Flamenco show right in the heart of the restaurant.  The dancers were a whirlwind of energy and elegance, their vibrant costumes lighting up the room with every twirl and stomp.  I may have no feet to dance with as a rubber duck, but you best believe I couldn’t resist bobbing along to the infectious rhythm!

In a nutshell, Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City is more than just a place to eat; it’s an enchanting destination bursting with history, warm hospitality, and a feast for the senses.  From the excellent staff like Aaron to mouthwatering dishes and captivating entertainment, this is a spot every foodie—rubber duck or not—should float on to!  You won’t want to miss this splash-tastic experience!

Pier 60 – Clearwater Bay, Florida

Get ready for a one-of-a-kind adventure at the enchanting Pier 60 in Clearwater Bay, Florida!  I’m excited to share my unforgettable day at this unique destination, which offers a blend of stunning sunsets, delightful entertainment, and a sprinkle of adventure.

Unfortunately, the actual pier was a no-go zone on my visit—repair work from the hurricane season meant I couldn’t get my float there.  But no worries, the beach still had plenty to offer!

The sand here is like a fluffy cloud under my little webbed feet!  I waddled onto the golden shore and felt the fine grains hugging me like a cozy nest, perfect for a duck just lazing around!

The beach stretches for miles, sunbathers soaking up those glorious rays while families laugh and play.

I couldn’t help but squeak with delight as I watched kids enjoying the weather and building towering sandcastles that looked like royal duck palaces!  And guess what?  The beach is as clean as a whistle!  I paddled about, proud to splash around in such a pristine paradise!

The sunsets at Pier 60 beach are the absolute star of the show!  As the evening approached, I found a cozy spot on the sandy shore, eagerly awaiting the breathtaking transformation of the sky.

The sun gracefully descended, casting a warm golden light across the water, turning it into a shimmering sea of jewels.  It was a sight that inspired awe and wonder, leaving me quackless!

When I thought it couldn’t get any better, the sky erupted into a vibrant palette of purples and pinks, reflecting beautifully off the water’s surface.  It felt like I was witnessing nature’s fireworks display, and I couldn’t contain my excitement!

I quacked with joy as I saw some folks embarking on sunset tours, their boats creating ripples that danced in the golden light—what a perfect way to soak in the breathtaking view!

But the magic didn’t end with the sunset.  As twilight settled in, Pier 60 came alive with a vibrant energy.  Street performers gathered, and the first stars began to twinkle overhead.  Jugglers, magicians, and dancers filled the air with laughter and excitement.  I happily bobbed along with the beat, feeling the electric energy of the crowd.  It was a celebration that perfectly complemented the beauty of the setting sun, keeping everyone entertained and excited!

Let’s not forget about the food!  The pier was lined with mouthwatering food stands, filling the air with delicious aromas.  Although I may not enjoy funnel cakes or fresh seafood, I could imagine how tasty they were while watching the sun slip away behind the horizon.

My human was tired, so we did not engage in the merriment following the sunset, but there was certainly no shortage of smiles and laughter!

In a nutshell, Pier 60 in Clearwater Bay is a must-visit for anyone who adores stunning sunsets, delightful entertainment, and a sprinkle of adventure—whether you’re a friendly rubber duck or a human sunseeker!  With unparalleled views, playful sailboats, and a lively festival atmosphere, it’s genuinely the quackiest place to make cherished memories!

As I waddled into the bar, the atmosphere immediately swept me away.  Imagine the buzz of New Orleans swept up in a colourful Cuban carnival!

The soft lighting, comfy couches, and the chatter of happy patrons created a cozy vibe that made me want to quack with joy.

Oh, and what’s a cigar without a drink to match?  Lexi recommended the “Last Word,” a zesty cocktail that combines gin, green chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lime juice.  It’s a refreshing and tangy drink, perfect for cutting through the rich flavours of a cigar.  The gin provides a strong base, while the green chartreuse adds a herbal complexity, the maraschino liqueur brings a subtle sweetness, and the fresh lime juice adds a refreshing tang.  It’s as refreshing as a spring splash in the pond, and every sip pairs perfectly with a fine cigar.  Talk about bubbly brilliance!

  • El Reloj/J C Newman Cigar Factory – Ybor City, Florida

El Reloj/J C Newman Cigar Factory – Ybor City, Florida

Today, I’m paddling through the vibrant and historic Ybor City, Florida, exploring the fascinating world of the local Cigar Factory.  You might be wondering what a rubber duck like me has to do with cigars.  Well, as a curious and adventurous rubber duck, I’m always drawn to unique and interesting stories.  And let me tell you, the story of the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory is as rich and layered as a beautifully rolled cigar!  So, let me float you through this delightful story.

The J.C. Newman Cigar Factory has a legacy that dates back to 1895 when Julius Caesar Newman, a hopeful immigrant from Hungary, arrived in America.  He set up shop in Ybor City, a bustling enclave known for its cigar-making heritage and rich cultural tapestry.  At that time, Ybor City was a melting pot of cultures, with Cuban, Italian, and Spanish influences weaving together to create a unique community.  Built in 1910, the factory is a proud emblem of this rich cultural tapestry, telling tales of the past with its charming architecture.

As I bobbed around in my little tub, I saw generations of skilled artisans working tirelessly, crafting cigars that have captured the hearts of enthusiasts far and wide.  The spirit of Ybor City and its historic significance in the cigar industry is palpable here, making me feel like I’m floating in a living museum!

Now, let’s dive into the captivating cigar-rolling process in Ybor City!  The factory buzzes with energy as master cigar rollers, or “torcedores,” skillfully transform premium tobacco leaves into exquisite cigars.

The air is thick with the rich aroma of aged tobacco, and I can hear the rollers’ soft chatter and laughter as they work their magic.

The torcedores meticulously select the finest leaves and delicately choose the wrapper, binder, and filler to create perfectly balanced blends.

I couldn’t help but be in awe of the artisanal aspect of their work.  It’s a testament to their skill and dedication.  It’s not just a job; it’s a labour of love rooted in tradition.

Each cigar that emerges from this factory is a work of art, embodying the passion and craftsmanship of those who make it.  It’s like a symphony of sights and sounds—like my cheerful quacks!

As the years passed, the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory evolved while staying true to its roots in Ybor City.  The mid-20th century brought challenges with the rise of machine-made cigars and shifting consumer tastes.  But, like a buoy navigating the tides, J.C. Newman persevered.  They focused on quality and the artisan tradition that defines their craft, inspiring all who witnessed their journey with their unwavering resilience and commitment to innovation.

In the 1990s, under the leadership of the Newman family—now in their fourth generation—the factory embraced innovation, introducing new lines like the beloved “Brick House” and “Diamond Crown.” The ‘Brick House’ line, for instance, is known for its robust flavor and smooth draw, while the ‘Diamond Crown’ line is celebrated for its luxurious taste and elegant packaging.  These cigars brought a modern flair to the time-honoured techniques nurtured in Ybor City, captivating new smokers and seasoned aficionados alike.  The excitement of this innovation is palpable in the factory’s air.

However, the tried-and-true American variety remains one of their most popular cigars.  It is 100% made in the USA using only USA inputs.

Today, the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory remains a family-owned gem in Ybor City, thriving in a competitive market while honouring its rich history.

As I bob along in my bathtub, I can’t help but feel a swell of pride for the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory and its deep ties to Ybor City.  From its humble beginnings to becoming a respected name in the cigar industry, its journey is a testament to resilience, tradition, and the joy of creating something truly special.  The factory is not just a producer of fine cigars; it’s a living piece of history and culture in this vibrant community, a part of the fabric of Ybor City.

So, whether you’re a seasoned cigar lover or just curious about this fascinating craft, remember that behind every puff of smoke, there’s a story waiting to be told.  And as for me, I’ll keep floating along, soaking up every moment of this incredible journey!  If you’re ever in Ybor City, I highly recommend a visit to the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory to experience this living piece of history and culture.  Quack on!

  • Jose Marti Park – Ybor City, Florida

Jose Marti Park – Ybor City, Florida

Hello, friends!  I’m happily bobbing along in the enchanting José Martí Park in the heart of vibrant Ybor City, Florida!  Oh, how my little rubber heart flutters with excitement!  Here, it feels like I’ve been transported straight to Cuba, with the lively atmosphere and rich culture embracing me like a warm hug.

As I float on the shimmering waters, I’m surrounded by lush greenery that dances in the gentle Florida breeze.  The palm trees sway gracefully, casting playful shadows that flicker across the park like performers in a joyous ballet.  It’s a scene of serene beauty that truly captivates the soul!

What makes this park unique to me is its profound cultural significance.  It is a tribute to José Martí, a legendary Cuban poet and revolutionary who dedicated his life to the cause of Cuban independence.  As I drift by the majestic statue of Martí, I can almost feel his spirit inspiring me—a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom and the beauty of words.  Even as a humble little rubber duck, I carry that sentiment close to my heart!

José Martí was more than just a national symbol; he was a passionate journalist and writer who played a crucial role in Cuba’s fight for independence from Spanish rule.  Born on January 28, 1853, in Havana, he became a prominent figure in Latin American literature and earned a revered place in Cuban history.

Martí believed in justice, education, and cultural identity.  He sought independence and unity among different factions in the struggle against colonialism.  In 1895, he co-founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party and became a guiding force in the Cuban War of Independence.  Although he tragically lost his life in battle on May 19, 1895, his legacy continues to spark movements for freedom and social justice across Latin America.

Floating here, I’m reminded of his literary genius.  His works, including “Versos Sencillos,” are filled with reflections on love, freedom, and the human condition.  His words resonate with the profound emotions that still echo among those who cherish liberty.

Speaking of inspiration, the park celebrates another remarkable figure in Cuban history, Antonio Maceo Grajales.  Born on June 14, 1845, he was a fearless leader in the independence movement known for his strategic guerrilla warfare.  With courage and a dream of liberty, he rallied countless souls to fight against Spanish forces.

Maceo’s advocacy for racial equality and the abolition of slavery made him a beacon of hope for many, especially among Afro-Cubans.  One of his legendary campaigns, the “Invasion of the West” in 1895, saw him travel across Cuba, igniting the flames of rebellion wherever he went.  Tragically, his journey ended too soon when he fell in battle on December 7, 1896.  Yet, his spirit continues to inspire generations of Cubans, celebrated as a national hero.

As I float here, surrounded by the beauty and history of this park, I feel a deep connection to the stories of these incredible figures.  Their struggle for justice and freedom is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit—a sentiment that resonates even with a little rubber duck like me!  So, here’s to José Martí, Antonio Maceo, and the many heroes who fought for a better tomorrow.  Let’s keep their legacy alive as I continue my little voyage through the waters of Ybor City!
