St. Anne’s Log Church – Parksville, British Columbia

Hello, friends! It’s Bob the Rubber Duck here, and I’m excited to take you on a delightful journey through time to explore the charming St. Anne’s Log Church in Parksville, British Columbia – a place with a lot of history tucked into its wooden logs!

Nestled in the heart of Parksville, St. Anne’s Log Church is not just any ordinary building; it’s the oldest surviving log church on Vancouver Island! Can you believe it has stood since 1894? That’s older than many of my fellow bath buddies! This charming little church is a testament to the pioneering spirit of the early settlers, who sought a community gathering place during a time when the vastness of the island felt somewhat lonely.

The story begins in 1893, when the spirited Rev. Canon Charles Cooper made his way from England to Canada in search of the perfect spot for a church. After a journey through Victoria, Nanaimo, and Port Alberni, he set his sights on French Creek. With the community’s help and a bit of engineering magic, construction began on April 17, 1894. Imagine the scene: oxen hauling logs and a lively group of settlers working together, all with a dream of a place to worship and gather.

As I float along, I can’t help but admire the craftsmanship that went into the log structure and the details of the church itself. On June 24 of that same year, the walls of St. Anne’s rose up as if reaching for the heavens, and by July 26, the finishing touches were complete, just in time for St. Anne’s Day!

On that beautiful summer day, the church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. William Perrin, and the respectful sounds of hymns filled the air. Picture a joyful picnic on the grounds, where people who had travelled from afar shared laughter and stories, surrounded by the beauty of the island they now called home. It’s not just a church; it’s a cornerstone of community spirit!

Over the years, the church has undergone some remarkable upgrades while preserving its historical charm. Notable renovations kept St. Anne’s alive and thriving, such as the installation of the bell in 1936 and significant restorations that followed the passage of time. But what truly warms my rubber heart is the fact that it remains a haven for special occasions, just like a cozy bathtub on a rainy day!

With each visit, one can feel the echoes of history – the first wedding in 1896, memorials for pioneers laid to rest, and the community gatherings that have taken place within its walls. As a rubber duck who loves a good story, I cherish the tales of the past that define this lovely church and the people who built it.

So, if you ever find yourself near Parksville, don’t miss the chance to waddle on over to St. Anne’s Log Church. Explore the grounds, soak in the atmosphere, and touch a piece of Vancouver Island’s history. Who knows? You might hear the whispers of Canon Cooper and the early settlers encouraging you to embrace the sense of community that this quaint little church has given to its visitors for over a century.

Until next time, keep splashing through life’s adventures, and don’t forget – history is all around us, waiting to be discovered! Quack quack!

Parksville Community Park – Parksville, British Columbia

Hello there! I’m Bob the Rubber Duck, and let me take you on an adventure through the delightful Parksville Community Park on Vancouver Island! I recently floated my way over to this enchanting spot, and I couldn’t wait to share my colourful experience with you!

Nestled by the sparkling Salish Sea, this park is a crown jewel of Parksville, a little slice of paradise just waiting to be explored.

As I waddled along the beautiful shoreline, I watched humans skipping stones across the water, laughter ringing through the air as they created delightful splashes. Oh, how I wished I could join in on the fun, but I was content just bobbing along!

My morning began with a warm cup of coffee—well, not for me, but for my human friends—at one of the cozy sitting areas. The park is dotted with benches that offer a perfect view of the breathtaking landscapes. Sipping their brew, my companions and I took a moment to soak in the beauty around us.

What’s even more impressive is the rich history of this place.

Established in 1963, the park has a charming backstory, including a humble beginning thanks to the efforts of the women from the Parksville Women’s Institute.

Their determination transformed this beautiful waterfront area into the recreational haven it is today. Just beyond the playground, you can almost feel the echoes of history mingling with the breezy air.

As I bounced along the paths, I marvelled at how this park isn’t just a haven for relaxation but also a hub of community spirit. Although the park was serene during my visit, it is not always the case. Throughout the year, it hosts festivals and events that bring residents and visitors together, filling the air with excitement.

A massive shoutout to everyone who frequents the park – the cleanliness is amazing! I guess everyone assures they feed the uniquely painted garbage receptacles….GREAT WORK!

So, whether you’re in the mood for a peaceful day by the water, some fun stone-skipping, or want to people-watch while soaking in the natural beauty, Parksville Community Park is the place to be!

  • Anton’s Pasta Bar – Burnaby, BC

Anton’s Pasta Bar – Burnaby, BC

Quack! Bob, here with a splashing tale to tell you about my recent visit to Anton’s Pasta Restaurant in Burnaby, BC! Nestled in a bustling neighbourhood rich with culture and diversity, this charming eatery has delighted its patrons since it opened its doors in 1983. With family recipes passed down through generations and a steadfast commitment to fresh, local ingredients, Anton’s has become a beloved staple in the community—a beacon for pasta enthusiasts, including rubber ducks like me! Their dedication to local produce makes you feel connected to the community with every bite.

As I floated into the restaurant, I was immediately enveloped by a warm, inviting ambiance. The walls adorned with whimsical murals and photographs celebrating Italian culinary traditions made me feel like I was swimming right into a cozy Italian kitchen. The aroma of herbs and spices dancing in the air made my little rubber heart race in anticipation. This warm ambiance made me, a humble rubber duck, feel comfortable and at home.

Let’s splash into the culinary delights that made my taste buds do a joyful jig! My first dish was the Seafood Cannelloni; I must confess, it was nothing short of a masterpiece. The tender pasta wrapped around a luscious blend of shrimp, scallops, and other seafood available on that day was all steeped in a rich rose cream sauce that made waves of flavour wash over me with each delightful bite. It was as if I had caught a glimpse into the ocean’s bounty—a true treasure that lifted me a little higher in my seat!

Next, I dived into the Penne Chorizo Alicia E Funghi. The perfectly cooked penne intertwined with spicy chorizo and earthy mushrooms created a delicious symphony that played a tune of spicy and savoury. Each forkful was a mouthwatering delight, making me dream of waddling back to the kitchen for seconds (or thirds, who’s counting?).   However, true to the restaurant’s promise of no one leaving hungry, I could not even finish the firsts.

Then came the Agnolotti Cardinal, little pillows of bliss filled to the brim with a heavenly blend of ricotta and spinach. When drizzled with their sumptuous marinara sauce, it felt like a warm hug wrapping around me after a long day of paddling through the pond—comfort food at its finest!

And I can’t forget the grand finale—the Tondi Nonna Angelina. Ah, this dish brought a tear to my plastic eyes! The round pasta, generously stuffed with a savoury mix of seasoned meat, was topped with a robust rose tomato sauce that whispered secrets of family traditions. It was clear that this was no ordinary meal; it was crafted with the love and care of a grandmother cooking for her family, which made each bite feel like a cherished memory.

Every dish filled my humans far before the plate was cleaned, but they were not leaving one morsel behind. It was “ducky” bags for all, so the entire meal will be enjoyed again after a home reheating.

Let’s not overlook the heart behind the restaurant—the staff! They were exemplary, always ready to lend a fin (or hand) with a smile while keeping my drinking fountain filled to the brim. Their attention to detail and genuine care elevated the dining experience, making it feel personal and special. Their exceptional service made me, a humble rubber duck, feel valued and important.

In the spirit of making every moment memorable, I could feel the rich history and passion that flows through Anton’s Pasta Restaurant. Don’t let the chance swim away if you ever find yourself drifting through Burnaby! Make a splash at this delightful establishment. With a menu filled with mouthwatering dishes and a team that welcomes you with open arms, it’s a dining experience that no rubber duck (or human) should miss! Quack-tastic memories await you!

She was not just friendly; her dedication to making our experience perfect was evident in every interaction. It felt like being part of a big, friendly family—something every rubber duck yearns for!

We arrived between the morning and noon crowds, and my humans seemed torn between breakfast and lunch. Classic human indecisiveness, right? After a brief but friendly debate and a bit of attitude, they ultimately decided to stay friends and make different choices.

First up was the breakfast combo; the biscuit and gravy were worth the stop! The biscuit was so fluffy it could have floated away with me—a perfect ratio of crispy to pillowy goodness. Then, the creamy gravy, seasoned like a pro, was heavenly. The eggs? Cooked to perfection, and the sausages? Simply marvellous. I couldn’t help but let out a little quack of approval!

Moving on to the lunch selection, my human opted for the BLT sandwich with a side of fries. Oh, what a sight! The bacon was crispy, paired with lettuce and tomato that seemed to be freshly picked – oh so delicious. The sandwich was stacked higher than my little rubber head, and the massive portion of fries – well, let’s say that we had two meals in one—lucky me!

50000 Silver Dollar – Haugan, Montana

Quacking my way across the highways of adventure, I couldn’t contain my excitement when we rolled up to the 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar in Haugan, Montana! Nestled just off Interstate 90, this vibrant oasis practically screamed “Road Trip!” to my rubber duck soul!

My humans were probably feeling the drag of the long trek from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Burnaby, BC, so this stop was a perfect splash of fun. The 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar—yes, you heard it right! —is not just any stop; it’s a family-owned gem that has been charming travellers since 1952, all thanks to the adventurous Gerry and Marie Lincoln, who started a fascinating tradition of collecting silver dollars. Now, we’re looking at four generations of coin collecting goodness! Talk about dedication!

Legend has it that the bar originally got its name when locals, who were paid in silver dollars, began leaving their coins embedded in the bar as a fun way to contribute to the place. The name changed as they reached milestones—starting at 2,000 and evolving all the way to the mighty 50,000! When I floated in, the count was an incredible 87,214! I can’t wait to see it hit 99,999—imagine the celebratory splash party!

The moment I waddled into the bar, I was captivated. The walls are a dazzling display of coin holders stacked from floor to ceiling. It’s like being in Scrooge McDuck’s treasure vault! And each shiny coin has a story behind it; they’re all donated by visitors, with their names on display. How cool is that? These walls are updated annually every February, showcasing all the shiny tokens added over the year. If only they could talk, I bet they’d have some wild tales to tell!

But that’s not all—this place has everything! The 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar boasts the largest gift shop in Montana, making it the perfect spot to find quirky souvenirs. Plus, there are tasty restaurants to recharge my humans, a small casino for those feeling lucky, and an Inn a stone’s throw away for tired travellers. It’s a treasure trove of fun!

Imagine over 5,000 square feet filled with goodies for every age! From local crafts to worldly finds, there’s something for everyone, all at reasonable prices. My humans were in hog heaven exploring the aisles, and they left with treasures that will always remind them of our epic road trip!

And let me take a moment to quack about the staff! They were not just friendly, but they made us feel like we were part of their story. Their eagerness to share their experiences and listen to ours turned a simple stop into a memorable encounter.

So, if you ever find yourself cruising down Interstate 90, don’t just zoom by—swing into the 50,000 Silver Dollar Bar! You’ll leave with a heart full of adventure and maybe a glistening coin of your own. Quack-tastic, right?

  • Mexico Lindo – Liberty Lake, Washington

Mexico Lindo – Liberty Lake, Washington

At the suggestion of Nick, our Happy Hour host from the Best Western, I found myself waddling my way into Mexico Lindo. I got a splash of joy right from the start! The moment we quacked open the door, the warm, family-friendly atmosphere wrapped around us like a cozy floatie. Laughter bubbled up around us, and families enjoying their meals were as lively as a pool party on a sunny day.

A Happy Birthday wall immediately by the front door added to the family feel. What a splash-tastic idea! It was filled with photos from celebrations, adding an extra sprinkle of happiness to the ambiance.

The restaurant was almost full when we arrived, but a phenomenal and attentive team of servers still welcomed my humans and me. We wanted for nothing as they all worked together to ensure our glasses were full of water, our chip bowl was replenished as needed, and they even stopped to have their photo taken with me.

As we settled into our booth, crispy house-made tortilla chips and zesty salsa arrived at our table faster than I could say “quack!” Let me tell you, those chips were still warm, and that salsa—WOW. I’m not sure what the special ingredient was, but it was beak-smaking tasty.

The drink menu had a few interesting options, with my human choosing a house specialty – Pink Potion—a drink that whisked her straight to a tropical paradise. It’s like a piña colada, but with a splash of magic that makes it unique. They know how to mix up a good time!

For the main event, we dove into some delightful dishes. The Camarones al Mojo de Ajo had plump shrimp and mushrooms sautéed with a shower of garlic goodness—irresistible! The Mexican rice, beans, and salad accompanying it were the perfect sidecars for this delectable dish.

My other human chose the Taco Salad from the Light section of the menu. The perfectly cooked and seasoned beef was atop a taco shell full of rice, beans, fresh veggies, cheese, and a dollop of sour cream.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, enjoying a family meal, or simply indulging in delicious Mexican flavours, Mexico Lindo is the place to be. I’m just a rubber duck, but even I can appreciate a great dining adventure! Quack-tastic!

  • Stoney The Bull – Greenbough, Montana

Stoney The Bull – Greenbough, Montana

Hey there, fellow travellers! It’s me, Bob the Rubber Duck, and I’m here to tell you about an interesting sight at Clearwater Junction in Montana—the incredible Stoney the Bull! Now, I might be small and floaty, but that gigantic statue of Stoney is anything but! He’s this unforgettable giant that truly embodies the charm and character of Montana, standing proudly over Stoney’s Kwik Stop, where all the action happens.

This pitstop has been bustling since the late 1960s, assisting travellers as they stop by to refuel and grab a bite. Stoney’s Kwik Stop has everything you need, from 24-hour gas service to a convenience store packed with snacks and goodies. I mean, who wouldn’t want to indulge in some soft serve ice cream or fresh sandwiches after a long drive? It’s a perfect spot for anyone on an adventure!

And let’s not forget the cozy bar and lounge, providing folks a chance to unwind, share stories and enjoy the friendly local hospitality. There’s even a casino on-site for those feeling lucky!

Of course, it’s Stoney the Bull that first caught my attention. Added to the site back in the early 1970s, he’s more than just a quirky roadside attraction—he’s a beloved symbol of the local community. I’m thrilled to see people snapping photos with him; he’s like a big, friendly beacon along Montana Highway 200 and 83! At 20 by 12 feet, he’s hard to miss, and I’m sure he’s brought a smile to many faces.

Now, Stoney’s had his ups and downs, just like any legend. I heard he had to undergo some repair work back in 1998—over 200 bullet holes patched, a stolen tail replaced, and a shiny new paint job for good measure. Then in 2021, he had another makeover, getting a horn reattached, 32 new bullet holes patched, repairs to his tail and a few more, yet another fresh coat of paint. You can tell his owners really care about him, and I just know he’ll continue to stand guard for years to come.

So, whether you’re embarking on an epic road trip or simply passing through, don’t miss the chance to swing by Clearwater Junction and meet my friend Stoney the Bull. He’s more than just a statue; he’s your gateway to all the unique experiences Montana has to offer! Quack quack, and safe travels!
