Bob here, paddling over from the charming depths of Wayne, Alberta, a small town nestled in the picturesque Canadian Badlands, to share a BOBortunity that will tickle your feathers! Prepare to be captivated by the unique charm of the Last Chance Saloon—a place that’s bursting with history, laughter, and some seriously scrumptious bites! It’s a dining experience you won’t want to miss.

Established in 1913 during the bustling coal mining boom, the Rosedeer Hotel and its delightful companion, the Last Chance Saloon, have evolved into lively hubs of conversation and camaraderie in what was once a thriving coal mining community.

With only 28 spirited residents remaining in the town of Wayne, this spot sure knows how to keep the spirit of the Wild West alive! The history here is as rich as the food.
Once infamously dubbed the “Bucket of Blood” for the raucous shenanigans of miners, you can still imagine the scenario that resulted in the historic bullet holes decorating the saloon walls—go ahead, ask your server for a peek!

As the coal mining population swelled, the Rosedeer Coal Mining Company opened the Last Chance Saloon to cater to over 250 hungry and thirsty miners each day. Can you believe it? After a thrilling poker match, the Dayman family seized the reins and kept the cheer flowing for a staggering 65 years—talk about bar success! In total, this beloved saloon has had only three owners in a century of warm-hearted service.
Fast forward to today! The current owners, Dave Arsenault and Paula Sutherland, have embraced the cozy charm of the place while adding a smoky twist with their signature in-house smoked meats. Not to mention, there are seven wonderfully themed hotel rooms, a dog-friendly patio, and an annual music festival that truly embodies the spirit of community, featuring local bands, delicious food, and plenty of dancing under the stars.
As I floated through the menu, I was met with dishes that sent my taste buds splashing with joy, making it challenging to choose.
My first human’s choice was the fish and chips. Pure bliss! With a crispy batter and fish tender enough to please even the pickiest palate, it’s a dish that’ll make you want to swim back for more.

My other human could not resist the smoky BBQ ribs—hold on to your hats! Smoky and succulent, they paired harmoniously with perfectly prepared homemade beans, adding a comforting touch. And of course, I couldn’t resist a couple of perfectly crafted Caesar cocktails that danced their way to my happy little beak! The food here is a feast for the senses.

Let’s not forget about the beating heart of the saloon – Paula and her excellent choices for the staffing! With enthusiasm that bubbles like a refreshing brook, their passion flows through every corner of the Last Chance. The team creates an inviting atmosphere, making this the perfect spot for locals and travellers alike to gather, share hearty laughs, and enjoy the fantastic food on offer. You’ll feel like part of the family here, welcomed with open arms.

A highlight that the group was eager to share with us is a one-of-a-kind historic bandbox. This unique musical instrument, a staple of entertainment in the early days of the Last Chance Saloon, was played for us, bringing us back to the days of yesteryear.
