This place is a true gem for beer lovers.

Their family-friendly taproom has a vibe that feels like your best friend’s cozy living room.

Perfect for a few drinks and a friendly board game competition.

We were soon ushered to our reserved table, beautifully decorated for Valentine’s Day and fully equipped for a seafood extravaganza.

The amazing ladies behind the bar offered samples that made the decision deliciously difficult.

One of my humans, not the best at handling beer, opted for a refreshing cider that hit the spot, while the other human was thrilled to find “Stay Gold”, a light ale on the menu.

The sourdough bread was perfect for dipping into delicious juice.

Lobster, potatoes, corn, garlic, and onions were perfectly cooked and accompanied by a side of drawn butter that was simply irresistible.

Our friendly server popped the question, “Are you not staying for dessert?”

How could they not partake in such a sweet ending? Back down they went to savour every last bite, ending their meal on a high note.

Grateful they had waited those long months to celebrate their birthdays at a Raw Bar Oyster pop-up.

Silver Heights Restaurant – Winnipeg, Manitoba

This time, my humans and I glided over to the wonderful Silver Heights Restaurant in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where we gathered with some friends for an early holiday feast that was nothing short of spectacular.

Affectionately dubbed the CHEERS of Winnipeg, Silver Heights has been sprinkling joy throughout the St. James area since 1957.

They continue to embody the same friendly philosophy that won hearts when they first opened those doors.

    Baby Baby – Winnipeg, Manitoba

I might have been stuck at home, dreaming of butter and breadcrumbs.

However, I was practically splashing with excitement about this hot new spot making waves in the city’s food scene!

Crafted by the culinary dynamo Raya Konrad and Chris Gama (co-owners of Clementines) through the expertise of Chef Daly Gyles.

Every menu item my humans enjoyed seemed to transform ordinary ingredients into extraordinary experiences!

My humans kicked off the evening with a plum collins and an amaretto sour slushie.

What an enchanting introduction to an evening bursting with flavour!

It was just the kind of splashy start you want when diving into new culinary waters!

First, they indulged in the lobster roll, oh my quacky goodness! This was no average lobster roll.

It was a luxurious treasure trove of sweet, succulent lobster meat all cuddled up in a buttery toasted roll.

Next up was the beef tartare, teamed up with kettle chips.

A sprinkle of salsa and a dash of pear added a twist that made my heart go glub-glub with joy!

They sampled the fried broccoli, which was roasted to crispy perfection.

The pairing with a zesty aioli made their taste buds wake up and do a happy dance.

And, oh my quack, the scallop XO noodles!

A tower of fresh noodles topped with beautifully seared scallops, it was a sight to behold!

This dish was a real showstopper, elegantly plated and swimming in a luscious passion fruit sauce. My human couldn’t stop raving about it!

The sea bass was as light and flaky as a gentle breeze. The flavours twirled on the palate like a ballet of deliciousness.

And let’s not forget the crispy rice that completed this masterpiece. It was perfectly crunchy and oh-so-satisfying!

They devoured a heavenly creamsicle parfait with a texture so silky that I nearly slipped off my floaty from envy. Alongside this, a delightful stuffed cream puff had me quacking with pure joy!

Each sweet bite sent them soaring straight to dessert paradise. They basked in the warm glow of friendship.

Seriously, can you think of a better way to cap off a fabulous meal?

This place doesn’t feel like any ordinary bar; it’s a classy joint where everyone can kick back and enjoy.” It’s clear he has a passion for the St James area of Winnipeg, where he also runs Dreamland and St James Burger, as well as the Four Crown Restaurant on McPhillips Street.

  • Raw Oyster Company Pop Up at Torque Brewing – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Raw Oyster Company Pop Up at Torque Brewing – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Well, well, well, what a delightful surprise it was to float into the world of fresh oysters way out here in the prairies! Discovering a raw oyster company in such an unexpected place is truly remarkable. And no, I’m not talking about those Prairie Oysters you might be thinking of (yikes!).

Chef Aaron Crawford, the mastermind behind Raw Oyster Company, started this magical journey in spring 2023. He’s already made waves, sourcing and serving some of the top oysters across the country. Originally from Winnipeg, he trained under some of Canada’s culinary masters, and now he’s bringing the ocean’s bounty right to our prairie doors!

My human has heard raving reviews about the Raw Oyster Company pop up events.

They happened to be throwing a shindig nearby, and she couldn’t contain her bubbling excitement as she and her friend arrived for an afternoon full of tasty treasures!

Torque Brewing, established back in 2016, is a gem tucked near the Winnipeg airport. Trust me, this place is a breeze to find — just a simple turn off King Edward Street, and voila! Parking? Plenty of space!

The vibe inside is modern yet cozy, with a bar that runs almost the entire width of the taproom.

Comfy barstools make it perfect for a gathering of fellow foodies, and with around 18 crafted beers on tap, it’s a beer lover’s paradise.

Now, my human didn’t really fancy herself a beer connoisseur, but fear not!

They had some fine wines to sip while gobbling down succulent seafood!

Upon arrival mid-afternoon, the lineup had already moved on, giving my human and her friend a chance to chat with the staff and soak in the rich history of getting seafood into the heart of the prairies.

Oysters are, of course, a highlight, but expect surprises like seafood boils and towers that keep everyone guessing (and salivating)!

Oh boy! They started with the Irish Point oysters from Rustica Harbour, PEI, served with zesty lemon and an out-of-this-world vinegar combo that made those little delights sing!

My humans might not be oyster experts, but they sure knew these were among the best they’d ever tasted.

A spectacular assortment of shellfish arrived, and I could practically hear the “oohs” and “aahs” echoing.

We’re talking whole lobster, sizable crab, mussels, shrimp, and all the classic fixings, perfectly cooked corn on the cob, tender potatoes, and juicy sausage tossed together in a spicy sauce that made the flavours dance!

After indulging in their tasty marathon, they eased up with an extra glass of cabernet.

So, what inspired Chef Aaron to start Raw Oyster Company?

He saw a gap, a true lack of fresh seafood in the prairies!

Sure, restaurants serve oysters, but his mission is to bring ocean-fresh experiences to our landlocked hearts.

Oh, and just a little reminder: The Raw Oyster Company doesn’t just stop at pop-ups: they’re also offering catering!

Imagine the joy and astonishment on your guests’ faces when they see a seafood spread like this at your event.

In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for the next pop-up event that is sure to be soon.

After indulging in their mouthwatering treats at the Taste of Manitoba, we waddled right over to experience them in their home nest!

The name honours the owner’s family, and oh boy, those memory walls are a heartwarming nod to the importance of family. Talk about making a rubber duck feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

As soon as I hopped inside, I felt cozy vibes wrapping around me like a warm bath.

The place had this retro charm that whisked us back to good ol’ diner days when burgers and milkshakes reigned supreme!

But don’t let that fool you; the menu here is anything but retro.

I brought along some fellow quackers for this culinary adventure. We were ready to set sail on a feast! From imaginative boozy shakes that made my feathers tickle to creamy mac and cheese, each dish was an exciting surprise!

We kicked things off with some shake-tastic beverages, both spiked and non-alcoholic. The flavours would make any duck drool, like black forest cake and caramel.

We couldn’t resist getting a full portion of those crispy brussels and feta we had sampled at the Taste of Manitoba,

and, of course, we dove right into their gooey mac and cheese. Who could resist that?!

    Oklahoma Smashed Burger,

    Philly Dunk Sandwich,

    Fish and Chips,

the special Out-N-In Burger for Burger Week,

    and finger-licking great Chicken Wings

    for the mini-human.

Our fantastic server, Colton, was an absolute gem.

With a smile brighter than a sunny day at the pond, he made sure we were pampered from start to finish.

And the rest of the crew? They joined in to sprinkle even more magic on our experience, ensuring our drinks were topped off and our plates overflowed with flavour.

We waddled out with full bellies and even fuller hearts! But with no room for desserts.

If you ever find yourself swimming in Winnipeg waters, do yourself a favour and paddle on over to Dave and Laverne’s!

The portions were hearty, and the passionate teams behind each booth were such a delight.

Their cheerful smiles made each bite even more enjoyable, making us feel right at home amidst all the hustle of hungry visitors.

We had sampled Perfect Pierogies at their food station. So we stopped by to visit their team in the vendor area.

One lady shared that she has worked with Perfect Pierogies for over 20 years. She even shared that the current CEO was her trainee at one point in time! What a treasure trove of knowledge and pride!

Perfect Pierogies is a family-owned and operated food manufacturing company located in Garson, Manitoba.

Their pierogies are available across Canada at retail and are the chosen pierogi for many restaurants and caterers.

Von Slicks is a newer gem that offers award-winning flavoured finishing butter sticks, such a cool local invention!

Von Slicks blends real food with real butter in small batches. Then they package it perfectly in a push tube, making for easy use, minimizing mess and waste.

What a great concept! Their savoury and sweet varieties are must-tries for steaks, pancakes, and everything in between.

Currently distributed at a variety of Western Canadian retailers and online in the cooler months. My humans can hardly wait to pick up a couple tubes!

We were fortunate to bask in perfectly sunny weather that set the stage for a day filled with deliciousness and friendly vibes.

  • Skinners – Lockport, Manitoba

    Skinners – Lockport, Manitoba

Hey there, my feathery pals! Bob here, ready to dive into another quacky adventure! Today, I’m taking you on a delightful journey to The Original Skinner’s in Lockport, Manitoba, so grab your floaties and let’s paddle through this tasty tale!

On a sun-drenched Sunday with the gentle river breeze ruffling my feathers, Goldie, my humans, and I cruise down the picturesque River Road, an absolute favourite for all my Winnipeg friends!

Our destination…. The Home of The World-Famous Hotdog – Skinners.  The excitement builds as we get closer, and oh boy, can you smell that mouthwatering aroma wafting from the historic eatery? It’s like a tasty treasure hunt!

Even amidst the Great Depression, Jim’s 10-cent hot dogs and 5-cent fries created a frenzy of loyal customers, talk about commitment to deliciousness!

As I flapped around, I learned that when Jim hung up his apron, his sons took the reins. Gordie, Morden (Ducky), and Jimmy carried on the family tradition in the 1940s. Did you know Jim Skinner Jr. was quite the hockey star?

A highlight of his career was coaching the Detroit Red Wings, helping them snag a Stanley Cup in 1955. And guess what? He had a whole lineup of players working at Skinner’s during their summers off! Imagine all those future NHL stars flipping burgers and serving up hot dogs. What a sight!

Now you might be wondering why there are two Skinner locations in Lockport. Well, gather ’round, my friends! In the 1940s, Highway 44 was straightened out, bypassing the original Skinner’s. The Skinners were very insightful and did not want to lose the legacy, so they opened Skinner’s Hwy 44 on the new Highway 44 in 1945!

Both spots are decked out with retro vibes and vintage jukeboxes, but let me tell you, the River Road location shines with NHL memorabilia that survived a fire in 1974. Talk about good fortune!

On previous visits, I was curious about the hockey theme with all the autographed photos of famous hockey stars. Being in Canada, I thought it was traditional fanfare, but learning about the Skinner family’s remarkable history makes it all the more special!

Fast-forward to 1972: the Skinner family passed the baton, and the Thompson family took charge in ’79. Hats off to the Thompsons for keeping the nostalgia alive and for being recognized for their longevity inManitoba!

As soon as we arrived, my human companions couldn’t resist the tantalizing menu. One dove into the legendary foot-long hot dog, the classic that has won hearts for decades. Picture biting into that juicy goodness, topped just how you like it. pure joy!

The other human went for a burger that was thick, flavorful, and downright divine! The quality and taste of the food at Skinner’s is something that will leave you craving for more.

They’re crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and every bite is a crunchy reminder of why Skinner’s has been a household name for over 90 years. Sadly, our bellies filled up before we could treat ourselves to their famous ice cream. Next time, I’m saving some tummy space for that creamy delight!

Take a moment to soak in the stories and memorabilia that tell the legacy of Skinner’s. It’s not just a meal; it’s a delicious slice of history!

Each tasty bite will have you waddling back for more. Quack-tastic eats await you at this charming spot that keeps the smiles and flavours flowing! See you there!

Prepare to be captivated by the unique charm of the Last Chance Saloon.

Established in 1913 during the bustling coal mining boom, the Rosedeer Hotel and its delightful companion, the Last Chance Saloon, have evolved. They are lively hubs of conversation and camaraderie in what was once a thriving coal mining community.

Once infamously dubbed the “Bucket of Blood” for the raucous shenanigans of miners, you can still imagine the scenario that resulted in the historic bullet holes decorating the saloon walls.

Go ahead, ask your server for a peek!

My first human’s chose the fish and chips.

With a crispy batter and fish tender enough to please even the pickiest palate.

A highlight that the group was eager to share with us is a one-of-a-kind historic bandbox. This unique musical instrument, a staple of entertainment in the early days of the Last Chance Saloon, was played for us.

A visit to the Last Chance Saloon is like hopping into a delightful time machine filled with charming history, warm faces, and mouthwatering feasts.

Whether you’re popping in for a tempting meal or simply soaking up the nostalgic vibes of this cherished establishment, it’s clear this beloved bar will shine brightly in our hearts for many quacktacular years to come!

  • La Casa Gelato – Vancouver, British Columbia

La Casa Gelato – Vancouver, British Columbia

On our recent grand adventure to Vancouver, BC, my humans couldn’t stop raving about this gelato shop that boasted a jaw-dropping 238 flavours! I thought they were pulling my webbed little leg, after all, 238 flavours? That’s beyond what this rubber duck could possibly fathom!

Located in the heart of Vancouver, BC, La Casa Gelato, the delightful gem, first opened its doors back in 1982. Originally called La Casa Gelato/International Sports Bar, it served up Italian classics like pizza and panini alongside a mere twelve flavours of gelato and sorbetto. Somewhere along the line, the owners, Vince and Pina Misceo, decided it was time to make gelato their flagship, and let me tell you, the family has been spinning magic ever since!

Fast forward to 2019, and La Casa Gelato bagged a spot in the Guinness World Records for having the most flavours on-site in the world. A record that still stands today!

The family has created nearly 600 flavour combinations and continues to experiment with daring new ones. I found a gem of a quote from the patriarch of the family:

“Once I run out of flavours, I’ll be a dead guy.”

This dedication to their craft is truly inspiring!

As we waddled into La Casa Gelato, through the vibrant pink doors of this iconic building, it felt like stepping into a luscious strawberry ice cream bowl, pink everywhere!

The atmosphere was positively bursting with fun, making it impossible not to grin as we perused the endless rows of coolers. It was a joyous and lively experience, with vibrant colours and playful decor adding to the excitement of choosing a flavour!

First things first, we lined up to pay, right by a tantalizing display of exquisite ice cream cakes, Italian pastries, and chocolate delights. Ah, so tempting!

But our mission was clear: select one or two of those legendary 238 flavours. We paid for our scoops and received a nifty token that let us bypass the dilemma of melting treats while we made our selections!

Now came the moment of truth, narrowing down from 238 glorious options to our two scoops each.

The flavor lineup was out of this world: lychee, chocolate bacon, mango, kimchi, durian, black sesame, lavender, basil, chai tea, the classics like chocolate and vanilla, and even more outrageous combinations like chocolate Jack Daniels, berry and jalapeno, pear gorgonzola and blue cheese, and sour cherry, to name a few. Each flavour was a unique and delightful surprise, a testament to the creativity and dedication of the gelato makers at La Casa Gelato. Talk about a flavour buffet!

Despite the overwhelming choices, my humans were victorious, each emerging with their scoops and smiles wide as can be, playfully challenging one another to see who made the best selection. They sampled each other’s scoops, resulting in a delightful gelato tasting spree, racking up eight flavours in total! The gelato was rich and creamy, each flavour a burst of unique and intense taste. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and excitement, making the experience even more enjoyable.

The human who writes for me swears her choices of black sesame and sour cherry were the crème de la crème, but I have a feeling she’s a tad biased. Regardless, every last bite was heavenly!

All in all, it was a fantastic experience, bursting with flavour and joy. I can hardly wait for our next visit to Vancouver, where I’ll be ready to dive into more delightful gelato adventures at La Casa Gelato and see who can pick the champion flavour next time!
