BOB the BOBBER goes to Portugal!
BOB, our first winner of the GET YOUR BOB ON CONTEST in December 2025, brought to our attention the Great River Road journey along the Mississippi River.
Now he’s back as the week 21 winner with his awesome trip to Portugal!
Imagine bobbing your way through Lisbon, the stunning capital of Portugal.
In this city, the charming vibe is as vibrant as a sunny day on the water.
Lisbon, home to around 100,000 friendly folks, is built on seven rolling hills.
The views take your breath away!
The streets are a delightful maze of winding cobblestones. Each turn reveals enchanting sights like Medieval castles peeking over the skyline.
This city has a knack for blending the old with the new, and Bob couldn’t get enough!
Around the historic Alfama district, the haunting sounds of fado music wrapped around him like a cozy towel fresh from the dryer.
Bob even floated his way to Belém for the famous custard tarts, which were nothing short of magical!
And oh, the pastry shops!
They’re everywhere, tempting him with their sweet, sugary scents.
He bunked in the Chiado/Baixa area, perfect for fellow adventurers embarking on their first Lisbon voyage.
Bob could not resist some exploration of the modern side of Lisbon – amazing!
BOB discovered Mercado do Bolhão, a bustling market full of tasty twists on traditional Portuguese dishes.
He says that the LX Factory is a treasure trove, full of colorful street art and trendy galleries!
He even caught a DJ set in a quirky former brothel on Pink Street! Talk about a wild night out for a BOBBER!
While waddling through Lisbon, Bob learned that it’s incredibly walkable and bike-friendly.
The cobblestone and tiled sidewalks can be quite the workout, with slopes that feel like they could send you rolling down a hill!
But those inclines can tire out your little webbed feet!
Comfy shoes are a must!
Not to worry though, the iconic streetcars and motorcycle trolleys are always around to help out.
On to the second leg of BOB’s adventure! Sintra, a splendid gem just a breezy 40-minute jaunt from Lisbon!
Nestled in the enchanting foothills of the Sintra Mountains, this resort town has been a sanctuary for royals and dreamers alike.
Imagine BOB bobbing along the cobblestone streets, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of pastel-colored villas and majestic palaces that seem to whisper tales of the past.
First on his itinerary was the extraordinary Pena Palace, perched atop a mountain at a dizzying 1,500 feet above sea level.
The journey up was an adventure in itself; navigating the winding paths and charming cobblestones took around 30 minutes, but the views were worth every bob!
Built in the 19th century, Pena Palace predates Bavaria’s iconic Schloss Neuschwanstein by roughly 30 years!
Making it the first romantic palace in Europe!
The royal marvel is distinguished by its vibrant colours and whimsical architecture!
Pena Park, spans over 200 hectares of lush forest and stunning garden paths making it an amazing setting for Pena Palace.
Lakes that mirror the skies, winding trails, and peculiar sculptures standing guard over the treasures within.
The park boasts the richest and most unusual collection of tree species in Europe!
Who knew that tree-hopping could be so exhilarating?
Next on his adventure was the enchanting Quinta da Regaleira.
This breathtaking estate was crafted by the imaginative Italian architect Luigi Manini for the eccentric António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro between 1904 and 1910.
As he waddled through this fairytale-like wonderland, Bob couldn’t help but admire the splendid Neo-Manueline architecture, each detail telling a story forged in grandeur and mystery.
Now, let me tell you about the Initiation Wells: an eerie yet fascinating highlight!
These 90-foot-deep inverted towers feature spiral staircases.
The rumour is they were used for secret initiation rituals connected to Masonry and the Knights Templar.
How thrilling!
The gardens surrounding the estate reveal symbolic structures, such as the Chapel and the Portal of the Guardians.
After a day brimming with adventure and tales of yore, BOB and his companions retreated to the quaint historic center of Sintra.
This pedestrian-friendly hub is a feast for the eyes!
Winding streets and charming cafes, ideal for sipping exquisite Portuguese wine.
He savoured each drop, imagining himself as part of the local history.
A BOBBER at the heart of a romantic escapade!
As BOB settled down to rest, he pondered the magical day he had just experienced.
Sintra, with its palaces shrouded in mystery and gardens echoing stories of the past, truly captured his heart.
But fear not, dear friends, for this adventure is far from over!
For the 3rd leg of Bob’s journey, he whisks us on a colourful tour of Porto and the breathtaking Douro Wine Valley.
First, let’s dive into the wonders of Porto!
The iconic Dom Luís I Bridge arches gracefully over the shimmering river, while the charming Ribeira riverside district bursts with colour and life.
Often called Portugal’s “second city,” Porto features a UNESCO-listed historic center that beckons exploration!
This vibrant city isn’t just known for its atmosphere; it’s the birthplace of the world-famous Port wine.
Crafted in the nearby Douro Valley and aged in the historic cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, Port wine is enjoyed worldwide.
Floating closer to the action, Bob couldn’t help being captivated by the stunning blue-and-white azulejos.
Those beautiful Portuguese tiles adorn some buildings turning them into pieces of art!
And strolling through the markets overflowing with tantalizing Portuguese treats is an absolute must do!
From delectable produce to heavenly pastries and a seafood feast like no other, every corner promises a culinary delight!
While exploring, make sure you savour the iconic salt cod, a true staple in these parts.
And you must try this quirky snack called Cod chips?
Imagine delightful morsels of salt-dried cod, dipped in egg and batter, then fried to golden perfection! Yum!
But do not leave Porto without indulging in the legendary Francesinha sandwich; the taste is absolutely irresistible!
After indulging in all that Porto had to offer, Bob hopped aboard a bus tour that whisked him away to the enchanting Douro Wine Valley.
This breathtaking region consists of three unique sub-regions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, and Douro Superior.
Each boasts its own distinct climate and soil, which work together to produce those exquisite wines.
Here’s a fun fact: there’s no irrigation allowed!
The vineyards rely purely on natural water sources.
If someone tries to water the vines, they’d risk losing their wine license for life!
Bob admired the patchwork of steep hillsides.
Vineyards are tended by hand, no machinery in sight!
In many cases, olive trees serve as fences, creating a breathtaking landscape.
He even enjoyed a leisurely river ride through the valley…
…the views were simply stunning!
And who could resist stopping at a vineyard or two!
From small and intimate…
…to larger commercial estates
All made for extraordinary port wine tastings.
Bob says that Porto and the Douro Wine Valley are bursting with charm and character.
After basking in the sun, soaking up the sights, and indulging in some delicious vino in Porto, BOB made his way to Aveiro.
Aveiro is a beautiful and vibrant city often dubbed the “Venice of Portugal.”
As BOB glided along the vibrant canals, he couldn’t help but marvel at the stunning Art Nouveau architecture.
Those Moliceiro boats! Oh, what a magical ride!
Floating through the water on these colourful boats, Bob felt like royalty, surrounded by breathtaking views at every turn.
The city was alive with beauty.
And those iconic striped houses, known as palheiros, are unforgettable.
Those bright, cheery colours made him feel like he was cruising through a rainbow!
The welcoming atmosphere was perfect!
Bob felt right at home, strolling through the streets alongside the friendly locals, whether they were hopping onto a bus or ambling on foot.
Of course he had to take one last opportunity to indulge his palate in Portugal!
The fresh seafood? Absolutely quack-worthy!
But let me tell you, the real highlight for Bob in his culinary adventure at Aveiro was the ovos moles pastries.
Sweet little morsels that practically melted in his mouth!
One of Bob’s favourite stops was the Aveiro Museum, nestled in a former convent where Princess Joana once lived.
Talk about cruising through history!

As his adventure wrapped up and Bob hopped on the express train back to Lisbon.
Bob couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the unforgettable moments he spent in Portugal.
