Leisure Lake Family Campground – Sumner, Michigan

Greetings, fellow adventurers!  Bob here reflecting on a stop I made to visit with some human friends during the off-season at Leisure Lake Family Campground in Sumner, Michigan.  My friends, Ken and Raedene, were busy preparing for their opening on May 1. Still, they were able to take some time out to show us around their amazing campground, where families come together for unforgettable moments by the shimmering shores of a beautiful 35-acre fishing lake.

Ken and Raedene took the reins of Leisure Lake in 2013 and worked their magic to transform it into a sought-after oasis. Under their care, the number of camping sites has grown from 140 to at least 219, and they’ve made significant improvements that enhance both comfort and recreational activities. It’s truly a labour of love!

Leisure Lake’s atmosphere is as inviting as a warm summer day. Imagine a place where laughter fills the air, and the sound of kids playing echoes across sandy beaches. This family-friendly haven boasts a variety of amenities that keep everyone entertained.

There are spectacular themed weekends, of which 22 are themed in the 26-week season.  These folks never run out of ideas, with themes ranging from pets to sports to Halloween and Christmas to Memorial Day, Veterans, and 1st Responders.  Everything is celebrated at Leisure Lake. On these special weekends and holidays, you’ll find an array of planned activities that bring joy to campers of all ages. Don’t forget about the roped-off swimming area, where families can paddle and splash without a care!

For those who love fishing, you’re in luck! You can cast your line without needing a license. It’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the lake.  And for those who fancy a little boating, there’s a convenient boat launch for small motors. Just remember, this is a no-wake lake, allowing for a serene experience as you explore the gentle ripples of the water.

Now, let me tell you about the spacious camping lots—each one is at least 2,400 square feet and equipped with 20/30/50-amp electric service, ensuring you have all the modern comforts you desire. The bathhouses are clean and contemporary, and there’s plenty of recreation!

You can challenge your family to a round of putt-putt golf, rent a kayak or paddleboat to glide across the water easily, or join in on a movie night under the stars. For the little ones, there’s a playground area with endless opportunities for fun, along with two picnic pavilions where they can enjoy meals together.

The hub of this fantastic campground is a beautiful log cabin, which houses a well-stocked store for everything you forgot, and some items you did not know you needed, as well as quality souvenirs of your stay.

Tucked in the corner of supply hub is Mama Rae’s Café, where you can order food and feel pampered as you camp.  What a great gathering place for all the campers to become family and share their experiences.

Their hard work has attracted a loyal following, with seasonal campers returning year after year.   If you’re hoping to make Leisure Lake your summer destination, put your name on the waitlist—you never know when an opening might arise!  When I asked around what keeps people coming, the answer was quite clear – the owners are on site, attentive and friendly, making me feel like I am a cherished family member.

With its blend of modern conveniences and the serene beauty of nature, Leisure Lake Family Campground is a premier choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. So why not pack your bags and swing by for a sparkling adventure as you splash along the shores and make wonderful memories!

  • The Antlers Restaurant – Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

The Antlers Restaurant – Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

As we travelled from Ontario back to our home base of Winnipeg, we decided to cross over to the US at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  We were feeling hungry, so we asked around town for suggested local places to grab a bite. Several locals said, “You have to go to The Antlers.”  As a rubber duck with a penchant for adventure, I waddled on over, and I can assure you that dining there is quite the experience, bursting with history, character, and, of course, delicious food.

Let me take you back to the beginning. This legendary establishment has quite a storied past, starting off as the Bucket of Blood Saloon during the Prohibition era. Imagine an ice cream parlour making a hefty profit of $900 while only selling a couple of cones in the month… It did not take long before the government caught wind of it, and miraculously, it emerged as a lemonade stand! Talk about a twist in history!

The Antlers has had six families involved throughout its over four generations of heritage. It was exciting to learn about the infamous Kinneys, two Detroit cops, who bartered their way into creating an impressive collection of taxidermy that adorns the walls and ceilings. The Szabo family now carries on this tradition, ensuring that The Antlers remains a family-owned landmark.

Today, Northern Michigan folks gather at The Antlers, share stories, play some cards and lift their glasses to the stories of the past.

And if you’re into ghost stories, The Antlers even had its moment in the spotlight on A&E’s Biography channel when they explored its haunted legends. Just imagine the excitement of dining among tales of the past!

Now, let’s get to the main event—the food!

I had the pleasure of sampling their fish and chips, as well as the classic hamburger and fries. The fish and chips were delightfully crispy and golden brown, served with a side of tangy tartar sauce. Each bite was a delightful crunch that echoed the thrill of a good hunt! The freshness of the fish, paired with perfectly seasoned fries, made for a meal that was simply outstanding.

The hamburger and fries, on the other hand, were a hearty and satisfying option. Juicy and flavorful, it was cooked to perfection and served on a fluffy bun. The fries were crisp and seasoned just right, giving that nostalgic comfort that everyone loves. You really can sense the “Up North” tradition in each mouthful—rustic, homey, and made with passion.

So, if you’re in the area and craving a meal filled with heart, character, and a dash of history, don’t miss your chance to visit The Antlers Restaurant. Whether you’re there for the stories or the scrumptious Northern Michigan cuisine, you’re in for a quacking good time! Grab a table, soak in the ambiance, and don’t forget to try the poutine while you’re at it—just trust me on this one!
