PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park) – Victoria, British Columbia

I’m bobbing happily in the sparkling waters, my yellow feathers glistening under the sun, while taking in the magnificent sight of the largest park in the Saanich area! Can you feel that thrill bubbling up inside? Dive in with me for a splash of history! Back in the mid-1800s, this very spot was a bustling hub of logging operations: imagine lumber flying down the hills to help build the vibrant city of Victoria! Then, in 1910, Captain Henry Kellett’s unofficial title “Mount Douglas” became official. But wait, hold onto your feathers, because there’s more!

In 2022, this park was lovingly returned to its original name, PKOLS, which means “white stone” in the beautiful language of the Saanich people! This incredible hill isn’t just any old mound; it’s a cultural gem that has been a gathering place for the Saanich and Lekwungen indigenous peoples for joyous celebrations through the ages. Pretty cool, right?

Now, if you’re itching for an adventure, let me tell you about the exciting trails waiting for you at PKOLS! Start your journey at the beach area parking lot and take the enchanting Irvine Trail for a scenic hike, or if you prefer a smoother ride, drive up the fully paved road to the summit. Remember, it’s not about how you get to the top; it’s about the adventure and the joy of reaching it, and trust me, this park welcomes everyone with open arms!

As you gaze east toward the glistening Haro Strait and south to the iconic skyline of downtown Victoria, prepare for your heart to flutter with excitement! And trust me, don’t miss exploring both peaks! Each holds its own remarkable charm.

Whether you’re hiking, biking, or strolling leisurely, PKOLS truly caters to everyone, no matter your fitness level or age! It’s the ultimate picnic paradise; I guarantee that the gorgeous scenery will elevate your snacks to gourmet status, all while providing the perfect backdrop for delightful chatter and laughter!

When in the Victoria area, head on up to PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park), embrace the stunning beauty, breathe in that refreshing air, and enjoy the great outdoors!  Your memories will last forever!

  • Fort Langley National Historic Site – Langley, British Columbia

Fort Langley National Historic Site – Langley, British Columbia

Hello, adventurous pals! Bob here to tell you about my splash-tastic journey to the Fort Langley Historical Site in beautiful British Columbia! Even though the sun decided to play hide-and-seek on our visit, we made waves of memories!

Imagine this vibrant fur trading post where Indigenous peoples and European settlers came together. They traded everything from beaver pelts to shiny metal trinkets.

It’s like a historical marketplace that would have been filled with bustling chatter and exciting exchanges!

As swarms of miners flocked to the area like seagulls diving for chips, Governor James Douglas declared British Columbia a colony right in the heart of the Big House at Fort Langley. Talk about a moment for the history books!

Fast forward to today, and Fort Langley is a treasure trove of fun and learning for families! I waddled around the grounds, and boy, did we have a blast!

Kids were laughing and learning through hands-on activities that truly brought history to life.

Next up was the fur press! This was no ordinary contraption; it’s what folks used to squish those furs tight for shipping around the globe. It made me think about all those hardworking hands that made it all happen. Phew!

The Stores Building was next on our path. This building housed everything that the Fort would sell or use in day-to-day life.

Finally, we reached the Big House, which was home to the fort leadership. Meetings and discussions held in this building led to decisions that changed the course of history.

If you ever find yourself cruising through British Columbia, make sure to splash into the magic of Fort Langley Historical Site!

Set aside plenty of time, there’s loads to explore in this beautifully preserved piece of Canadiana.

You’ll soak up fascinating history, have a whale of a time, and who knows, you might even find a few new faces along the way!

  • Queen Elizabeth Park – Vancouver, British Columbia

Queen Elizabeth Park – Vancouver, British Columbia

As I BOB along the water’s edge, the breathtaking view of the mountains kissing the sky fills my little rubber heart with joy! Pair that with a skyline of downtown Vancouver, and it’s like a postcard come to life, utterly enchanting! And let’s not forget the flowers; WOWZERS! A riot of colours and shapes dances before my eyes at every turn. Honestly, it’s like nature threw a confetti party, and I’m here for all of it!

After soaking in all that excitement, we made a pit stop at a food truck that had us quacking with delight: Potato Tornado! One of my humans is a die-hard potato enthusiast, but this was a potato experience like no other. Imagine crispy, spiral-cut potatoes on a stick—talk about whimsical! This spiralling slice of heaven is so enormous that you want to have a buddy to share it with (or not; I won’t judge!). If you find yourself at Queen Elizabeth Park, make sure to grab one of these delicious treats. Trust me, they’re irresistible!

And don’t forget to check out the stunning quarry garden, the arboretum filled with magnificent trees, and sculptures from the renowned artist Henry Moore. It’s an art lover’s dream!

For those who enjoy a bit of action, the park offers tennis courts, lawn bowling, and pitch-and-putt! You can relax with a picnic, marvel at the stars, or, if you’re in the mood for a fine dining experience, Seasons in the Park awaits.

Unfortunately, the grand finale we hoped for was closed for repairs: the fabulous Dancing Waters fountain! Located near the Bloedel Conservatory, this spectacular display features 70 jets of water and uses 85,000 litres of recirculating water, creating a mesmerizing dance both day and night. The fountain operates on a special program that varies the heights of the jets. We will return to experience this stunning sight!

Downtown Sidney – Sidney, British Columbia

What a quack-tastic morning I had exploring the charming waterfront area of Sidney, BC!

My humans were visiting the beautiful Victoria area on Vancouver Island, and we booked a ferry ride back to the mainland departing from this little gem of a town.

As I floated down those delightful streets, I couldn’t help but ponder Sidney’s rich history; turns out it was ferry central for foot traffic since 1912, and then upgraded to automobile ferries in 1922! Can you imagine all the folks who waddled these streets before me?

But, just as we started our quest, the heavenly aroma of freshly baked goodies swept through the air. My humans, unable to resist the scent, led us on a quick detour to Sidney Bakery.

Oh my quack, the choices were endless! They finally settled on some unique and scrumptious pastries, and I was on cloud nine, floating with excitement.

Next up was Alexander’s Coffee Bar, and what a treat it was! The coffee was brewed to perfection, one of my humans even transformed theirs into a latte! Now that’s what I call a classy start to the day.

After indulging our eyes with this stunning scenery, we made our way to the Surly Mermaid for lunch. Oh, what a quirky spot it was!

The food was simply out of this world, and I could practically taste the happiness radiating from my humans as they savoured every bite.

As excited as I was for our next adventure, I felt a twinge of sadness saying goodbye to such a lovely and welcoming place.

As we boarded the ferry back to Vancouver, I couldn’t help but quack with glee about the wonderful memories we’d created. Here’s to even more adventures and quack-tastic moments in the future!

Just a hop, skip, and a splash away from the bustling Inner Harbour, Fisherman’s Wharf is a treasure trove of sights, sounds, and scrumptious flavours. Each day is a new escapade.

It’s a cornucopia of coastal life!

Barb’s Fish and Chips is practically a legend at the wharf, dishing out joy and fish since 1984! I love watching the excitement bubble up as locals and tourists line up. They eagerly anticipate their bites of the world-famous crispy BC Halibut. The tantalizing aroma wafting through the air (can you believe rubber ducks can detect smells?) makes my fluffy little ears perk up in anticipation. With open-air picnic tables right by the water, it’s the perfect place to feast on this delectable seafood while seals frolic nearby.

Don’t even get me started on Jackson’s Ice Cream, oh, what a treat! I can barely contain my delight as I watch kids giggle and bounce around, their ice cream cones piled high with mouthwatering flavours. It’s the ultimate way to cool down after a day of exploring! I float in my cozy corner, catching glimpses of those gleeful little faces taking their first tastes. Let me tell you, I can almost savour the joy right along with them! But caution alert!

After that little scare, I had my humans stop by the 4 Winds Nest Boutique for a breather. Although I was hoping for a cozy spot in an actual nest (hey, I’m a duck, after all!), I was thrilled to discover this charming shop filled with beautiful creations by talented Canadian artisans. From hand-crafted pottery to stunning jewelry and delicious preserves, it’s a feast for the eyes! I enjoy watching humans marvel at the colourful displays while I float nearby. The creative energy that fills the air is invigorating.

And oh, the excitement ramped up for our final stop! Aligning our visit with May 5th meant it was time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Puerto Vallarta Amigos! This delightful floating eatery serves up mouth-watering traditional recipes, bringing a taste of Mexico to the tranquil wharf. The Baja-style Fish Tacos have turned into the talk of the town!

The music, dancing, laughter, and delicious food brought the whole wharf to life on this festive day. Families gathered on the dock, sampling vibrant flavours and merriment. I couldn’t help but bounce with delight at the radiant smiles lighting up their faces!

As we strolled back to our car, I drifted along the docks, admiring the unique float homes lining the waterway. Oh, how splendid and colourful they are! They tug at my heartstrings while I respectfully honour the privacy of their residents. Just imagine living in those whimsical floating abodes! I can picture the breathtaking views and the friendly waves from their cozy homes, each a little slice of life on the water.

  • Chinatown – Victoria, British Columbia

    Chinatown – Victoria, British Columbia

Hello, my fabulous friends! It’s your squishy sidekick, Bob the Rubber Duck, here to quack my way through another thrilling escapade.  This time in the colourful Chinatown of Victoria, British Columbia! Quack-quack! Join me as we dive into a vibrant blend of history, culture, and modern charm in this extraordinary locale.

Nestled right in the beating heart of Victoria, Chinatown is not just a neighbourhood; it’s a treasure chest of stories, making it one of the oldest in all of Canada, with roots dating back to the bustling 1850s. Imagine a time when brave Chinese immigrants landed here during the gold rush, ready to carve out their dreams!

They brought with them their traditions, skills, and a hearty spirit, transforming this area into a lively hub bursting with shops, eateries, and cultural gems. Can you picture the hustle and bustle of that era? It was alive with excitement, and the echoes of those pioneering days still resonate through the streets today!

But every tale has its ups and downs. The Chinese community in Victoria faced some turbulent waters with significant hardships, discrimination, and exclusion over the years.

However, in 2019, a wave of hope washed over the community when the City of Victoria extended a heartfelt apology for past injustices. This sincere acknowledgment was not just a gesture; it was a powerful statement of reconciliation and inclusivity. Isn’t it uplifting to see how far we’ve come together?

Now, let’s float into the vibrant present! As you step into this delightful neighbourhood, you can’t miss the stunning Gate of Harmonious Interest.

Erected in 1981 as part of a revitalization effort led by the City of Victoria and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, this impressive gate stands at a towering 38 feet, adorned with intricate red and gold decorations symbolizing unity and harmony. Talk about a grand entrance!

Engraved on the gate are two heartfelt inscriptions: “To work together with one heart” and “To help each other achieve harmony.” These words are a beautiful tribute to the collaboration between Chinese and non-Chinese communities during its creation.

And let’s not forget the mighty stone lions flanking the entrance, generously donated by Victoria’s sister city of Suzhou.

Inside the gate’s outer red pillars, there are not one but two time capsules, set to be opened in 2081 and 2096! Plus, a plaque commemorates the brave 61 Chinese Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. This isn’t just a photo op; it’s a gateway to the past and the future!

Now, as I waddle down the enchanting Fan Tan Alley, which happens to be the narrowest commercial street in all of North America (seriously, it’s less than 3 feet wide at its skinniest!), I can’t help but soak in the vibrant energy around me.

Once infamous for opium factories and gambling dens, this alley has undergone a thrilling revival. In the early 1900s, it bustled with life, but police raids and changing tides led to its decline. By the 1970s and 80s, the alley was sparkling anew, transformed into what we can experience today!

I breathe in the delightful scents wafting from the many eateries as I paddle past colourful murals and charming boutiques. My humans found some truly unique treasures to bring back to our cozy nest.

Oh, and let me tell you about the culinary adventure we embarked upon at Little Yunnan, where one of my humans experienced the legendary Crossing the Bridge Noodle meal for the very first time—delicious doesn’t even begin to cover it!

Whether you’re on the hunt for quirky gifts, indulging in scrumptious bites, or simply revelling in the rich culture surrounding you, Chinatown in Victoria is a delightful treasure trove brimming with experiences waiting to be uncovered. So, let’s paddle over, enjoy the eclectic shops, and celebrate this beautiful tapestry of history and modern life!

Your adventure awaits, and I promise you’ll leave with memories as vibrant as the colourful lanterns illuminating this enchanting neighbourhood! Quack on and let the fun begin!

And through the years, Ogden Point has seen all kinds of action: grain terminals, fish processing plants, and major fires, oh my!

My journey did not include an adventure to the lower levels of the breakwater. However, it did include a stop at the Breakwater Café and Bar for a cocktail and a bite to eat.

My only regret is that I did not save space in my ducky tummy for a visit to the ice cream shop!  Next time….

  • St. Anne’s Log Church – Parksville, British Columbia

St. Anne’s Log Church – Parksville, British Columbia

This charming little church is a testament to the pioneering spirit of the early settlers, who sought a community gathering place during a time when the vastness of the island felt somewhat lonely.

The story begins in 1893, when the spirited Rev. Canon Charles Cooper made his way from England to Canada in search of the perfect spot for a church.

After a journey through Victoria, Nanaimo, and Port Alberni, he set his sights on French Creek.

With the community’s help and a bit of engineering magic, construction began on April 17, 1894.

Imagine the scene: oxen hauling logs and a lively group of settlers working together, all with a dream of a place to worship and gather.

As I float along, I can’t help but admire the craftsmanship that went into the log structure and the details of the church itself.

On June 24 of that same year, the walls of St. Anne’s rose as if reaching for the heavens, and by July 26, the finishing touches were complete, just in time for St. Anne’s Day!

Picture a joyful picnic on the grounds, where people who had travelled from afar shared laughter and stories, surrounded by the beauty of the island they now called home.

With each visit, one can feel the echoes of history: the first wedding in 1896, memorials for pioneers laid to rest, and the community gatherings that have taken place within its walls.

As a rubber duck who loves a good story, I cherish the tales of the past that define this lovely church and the people who built it.

The park is dotted with benches that offer a perfect view of the breathtaking landscapes. In addition, while sipping their brew, my companions and I took a moment to soak in the beauty around us.

Established in 1963, the park has a charming backstory. It includes a humble beginning thanks to the efforts of the women from the Parksville Women’s Institute.
