Last Chance Saloon – Wayne, Alberta

Bob here, paddling over from the charming depths of Wayne, Alberta, a small town nestled in the picturesque Canadian Badlands, to share a BOBortunity that will tickle your feathers! Prepare to be captivated by the unique charm of the Last Chance Saloon—a place that’s bursting with history, laughter, and some seriously scrumptious bites! It’s a dining experience you won’t want to miss.

Established in 1913 during the bustling coal mining boom, the Rosedeer Hotel and its delightful companion, the Last Chance Saloon, have evolved into lively hubs of conversation and camaraderie in what was once a thriving coal mining community.

With only 28 spirited residents remaining in the town of Wayne, this spot sure knows how to keep the spirit of the Wild West alive! The history here is as rich as the food.

Once infamously dubbed the “Bucket of Blood” for the raucous shenanigans of miners, you can still imagine the scenario that resulted in the historic bullet holes decorating the saloon walls—go ahead, ask your server for a peek!

As the coal mining population swelled, the Rosedeer Coal Mining Company opened the Last Chance Saloon to cater to over 250 hungry and thirsty miners each day. Can you believe it? After a thrilling poker match, the Dayman family seized the reins and kept the cheer flowing for a staggering 65 years—talk about bar success! In total, this beloved saloon has had only three owners in a century of warm-hearted service.

Fast forward to today! The current owners, Dave Arsenault and Paula Sutherland, have embraced the cozy charm of the place while adding a smoky twist with their signature in-house smoked meats. Not to mention, there are seven wonderfully themed hotel rooms, a dog-friendly patio, and an annual music festival that truly embodies the spirit of community, featuring local bands, delicious food, and plenty of dancing under the stars.

As I floated through the menu, I was met with dishes that sent my taste buds splashing with joy, making it challenging to choose.

My first human’s choice was the fish and chips. Pure bliss! With a crispy batter and fish tender enough to please even the pickiest palate, it’s a dish that’ll make you want to swim back for more.

My other human could not resist the smoky BBQ ribs—hold on to your hats! Smoky and succulent, they paired harmoniously with perfectly prepared homemade beans, adding a comforting touch. And of course, I couldn’t resist a couple of perfectly crafted Caesar cocktails that danced their way to my happy little beak! The food here is a feast for the senses.

Let’s not forget about the beating heart of the saloon – Paula and her excellent choices for the staffing! With enthusiasm that bubbles like a refreshing brook, their passion flows through every corner of the Last Chance. The team creates an inviting atmosphere, making this the perfect spot for locals and travellers alike to gather, share hearty laughs, and enjoy the fantastic food on offer. You’ll feel like part of the family here, welcomed with open arms.

A highlight that the group was eager to share with us is a one-of-a-kind historic bandbox. This unique musical instrument, a staple of entertainment in the early days of the Last Chance Saloon, was played for us, bringing us back to the days of yesteryear.

A visit to the Last Chance Saloon is like hopping into a delightful time machine filled with charming history, warm faces, and mouthwatering feasts. Whether you’re popping in for a tempting meal or simply soaking up the nostalgic vibes of this cherished establishment, it’s clear this beloved bar will shine brightly in our hearts for many quacktacular years to come!

So, if you ever find yourself waddling through Wayne, don’t just float by—splash into the Last Chance Saloon! You won’t regret it!

  • Chinatown – Victoria, British Columbia

    Chinatown – Victoria, British Columbia

Hello, my fabulous friends! It’s your squishy sidekick, Bob the Rubber Duck, here to quack my way through another thrilling escapade.  This time in the colourful Chinatown of Victoria, British Columbia! Quack-quack! Join me as we dive into a vibrant blend of history, culture, and modern charm in this extraordinary locale.

Nestled right in the beating heart of Victoria, Chinatown is not just a neighbourhood; it’s a treasure chest of stories, making it one of the oldest in all of Canada, with roots dating back to the bustling 1850s. Imagine a time when brave Chinese immigrants landed here during the gold rush, ready to carve out their dreams!

They brought with them their traditions, skills, and a hearty spirit, transforming this area into a lively hub bursting with shops, eateries, and cultural gems. Can you picture the hustle and bustle of that era? It was alive with excitement, and the echoes of those pioneering days still resonate through the streets today!

But every tale has its ups and downs. The Chinese community in Victoria faced some turbulent waters with significant hardships, discrimination, and exclusion over the years.

However, in 2019, a wave of hope washed over the community when the City of Victoria extended a heartfelt apology for past injustices. This sincere acknowledgment was not just a gesture; it was a powerful statement of reconciliation and inclusivity. Isn’t it uplifting to see how far we’ve come together?

Now, let’s float into the vibrant present! As you step into this delightful neighbourhood, you can’t miss the stunning Gate of Harmonious Interest.

Erected in 1981 as part of a revitalization effort led by the City of Victoria and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, this impressive gate stands at a towering 38 feet, adorned with intricate red and gold decorations symbolizing unity and harmony. Talk about a grand entrance!

Engraved on the gate are two heartfelt inscriptions: “To work together with one heart” and “To help each other achieve harmony.” These words are a beautiful tribute to the collaboration between Chinese and non-Chinese communities during its creation.

And let’s not forget the mighty stone lions flanking the entrance, generously donated by Victoria’s sister city of Suzhou.

Inside the gate’s outer red pillars, there are not one but two time capsules, set to be opened in 2081 and 2096! Plus, a plaque commemorates the brave 61 Chinese Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. This isn’t just a photo op; it’s a gateway to the past and the future!

Now, as I waddle down the enchanting Fan Tan Alley, which happens to be the narrowest commercial street in all of North America (seriously, it’s less than 3 feet wide at its skinniest!), I can’t help but soak in the vibrant energy around me.

Once infamous for opium factories and gambling dens, this alley has undergone a thrilling revival. In the early 1900s, it bustled with life, but police raids and changing tides led to its decline. By the 1970s and 80s, the alley was sparkling anew, transformed into what we can experience today!

I breathe in the delightful scents wafting from the many eateries as I paddle past colourful murals and charming boutiques. My humans found some truly unique treasures to bring back to our cozy nest.

Oh, and let me tell you about the culinary adventure we embarked upon at Little Yunnan, where one of my humans experienced the legendary Crossing the Bridge Noodle meal for the very first time—delicious doesn’t even begin to cover it!

Whether you’re on the hunt for quirky gifts, indulging in scrumptious bites, or simply revelling in the rich culture surrounding you, Chinatown in Victoria is a delightful treasure trove brimming with experiences waiting to be uncovered. So, let’s paddle over, enjoy the eclectic shops, and celebrate this beautiful tapestry of history and modern life!

Your adventure awaits, and I promise you’ll leave with memories as vibrant as the colourful lanterns illuminating this enchanting neighbourhood! Quack on and let the fun begin!

Their dedication to service truly shines through, and events like the Duck Race are an excellent reflection of their commitment to bringing everyone together!

As I bob around, I can’t help but feel the excitement buzzing in the air. The volunteers bring such a warm spirit of camaraderie, and I must say, they know how to throw a party! And oh, the duck-themed wear on the volunteers brought a tear to my eye: sunglasses, hats, pants, and even earrings – ducks, ducks, ducks everywhere. It was truly delightful to see smiles all around as they set up the race track and decorations—it’s like a big family gathering right here on the water.

As the countdown to the Duck Race begins, the anticipation is palpable! Everyone is cheering for their favourite rubber ducks, and I can’t wait to see who will glide to victory!

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to leave before the actual race. I’m sure it was a nail-biter to the finish, and I regret not being able to witness it.

So, if you are around Sooke in early May, you may be at the right time to join the fun and laughter at the Sooke Lions Club Duck Race. It’s more than just a race; it’s a celebration of community spirit and the joy of coming together. Grab your family and friends, and make a splash! Quack-tastic memories await!

  • Ogden Point Breakwater – Victoria, BC

Ogden Point Breakwater – Victoria, BC

Oh, hello there! I’m BOB, your friendly rubber duck, ready to take you on a splishy-splashy tour of the fabulous Ogden Point Breakwater in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia! Just imagine me bobbing along the waves, soaking in the sun, as I glide through this marvel of engineering.

It’s a gloriously sunny day, and the sparkling waters beckon me from Dallas Road. I waddle my way along the iconic breakwater, which stretches like a great concrete arm out into the mesmerizing Juan de Fuca Strait. What a fantastic view! I can see all sorts of vessels – cruise ships making grand entrances, ferries zipping across the harbour, and even float planes buzzing overhead. I kept my eyes out for wildlife sightings, such as seals, but alas, I did not spot any on our visit.

Now, let me spill the tea (or rather the seawater). Did you know that this breakwater was built because the City of Victoria wanted to welcome more shipping traffic after the Panama Canal opened? Smart thinking! With the powerful southeast gales trying to gatecrash the port, they needed some solid protection for the ships.

Construction on this beauty began way back in 1913. Over a million tonnes of stone and another million tonnes of granite were used – that’s a quack-load of rock! And through the years, Ogden Point has seen all kinds of action: grain terminals, fish processing plants, and major fires, oh my!

As I float along, I can spot the lighthouse waving hello at the end of the breakwater. It’s not just there for decoration! This trusty beacon helps guide ships safely into the harbour. And trust me, from this vantage point, the views are breathtaking. I can peer south toward the strait, west to Macaulay Point Park, and north to the bustling James Bay area. My humans and I sat on the benches at the base of the lighthouse, mesmerized by the serenity of the view.

Now, I must caution my fellow adventurers: If you decide to explore the lower levels of the breakwater, be careful! Those large cement blocks can get quite slippery when wet, and I wouldn’t want you to take an unexpected dip. So, tread lightly, and watch out for those waves!  When we were there, many humans were exploring the lower level, some diving in search of treasures, some fishing likely for a whale, and some just enjoying the thrill of navigating the original structure and the picturesque indigenous artwork that adorns the sides of the breakwater.

So, if you find yourself in Victoria on a sunny day, don’t just paddle around – hop on over to Ogden Point Breakwater! Whether you’re a rubber duck like me or a two-legged adventurer, there’s something magical waiting for everyone. Dive into the experience, soak in the scenery, and quack your heart out!
