  • Successful Squirrel – Florida

    Successful Squirrel – Florida

Quack quack! Have you ever seen a squirrel darting around your backyard like it’s auditioning for a role in an acrobatic show? Well, let me tell you, this little critter is not just any bushy-tailed rascal.

The subject of my inspired human today has the energy and determination of a squirrel. His human name is Sonny, and his story is as thrilling as a rollercoaster ride on a warm Florida day!

Picture this: a fluffy ball of energy zooming up a tree.  Suddenly, he hears a delightful *clink*—a peanut drops from above! Without missing a beat, he spirals down the tree, snatches his treasure, and starts piling it high for the winter, just like I gather my little rubber duck pals after a good splash.

Now, let’s dip into Sonny’s past, shall we? This adventurous guy was dealt some rough cards.  Orphaned at the tender age of two, he found himself adopted by a loving couple who desperately wanted kids but couldn’t have any of their own.

Growing up on a charming family farm, Sonny quickly realized that while working unpaid on the family farm was good practice, earning money at the neighbor’s farm sounded much more fun—and profitable! So, what did he do? He hustled his way into a job next door. Talk about savvy!

But life wasn’t all sunshine and daisies. In his teenage years, he faced heartbreak as he lost his adoptive mom to cancer, followed by another gut punch when his dad passed, too. That’s a lot for any creature to bear—I couldn’t even imagine floating down a stream with such weight. Yet, rather than drift away on waves of despair, Squirrel took to life with a spirit meant for soaring!

This guy had talent—mechanical talent!  By the age of 19, Sonny was a master mechanic, laboring tirelessly to support his family. And Sonny became the rock they both leaned on when his dad needed him.  Sonny’s tenacity kept him bobbing along even when life delivered a blow that could sink anyone.

Now, let’s dive into his shrewd thinking! While wrenching away at engine parts, Sonny spotted something—a tool truck guy who was dapper, cheerful, and didn’t look worse for wear despite the years.  Sonny thinks, “I want that life!” He went after it like a well-timed splash!

But wait, there’s more! When Sonny was selling tools, he noticed a pesky problem: Darn credit card fees cutting into his earnings. So, being the inquisitive squirrel that he was, he decided, “I could *totally* do that!” And just like my morning frolics in the tub, he waded in and figured it out, starting a credit card processing company as a side job!

Ever wanted to chase a dream that seems just out of reach?  Sonny didn’t want to wait until he was old and gray to enjoy Florida’s sunshine. So, he packed up his family and zoomed over to the Sunshine State! Once there, what did he think?  I love motorcycles, particularly Harleys. “Why not sell Harleys?” Spoiler alert: he did!

He then realized that he needed to know more people to be successful at a commissioned sales job, so he needed to find an avenue for Networking like a social butterfly—or perhaps a rubber duck at a pool party. He discovered BNI groups. Instead of just joining one, our go-getter started five! Can you believe it?

Can you see a pattern here?  Sonny sees beyond the page, discovers what is next, and makes it happen.

Now, fast-forward to today. Sonny and his lovely wife, who share a passion for motorcycles, have turned their love into a spectacular business that unites bike enthusiasts worldwide!

It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but just like a squirrel scavenging for nuts during fall, Sonny gathered ideas—some golden, some a bit nutty—but they all contributed to his success. They blend his adventurous spirit with his wife’s creativity, their hard work, and a splash of determination, creating a recipe for success. If something doesn’t exist, Sonny detours and makes it himself!

Their latest wonder? A nonprofit that reaches out to bikers in need. How heartwarming is that?

Spending time with this incredible individual on a recent trip was like riding a wave of inspiration!  Sonny opened his home to us, took a day off work, and whisked us away on an exhilarating tour of his vibrant world.

So, here’s a big shout-out from me, Bob the Rubber Duck—thank you, Sonny, for being an inspiration and showing us how to float through challenges with style! Keep paddling forward, my friend!

THANK YOU, SONNY, FOR AN INSPIRED

  • The Antlers Restaurant – Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

The Antlers Restaurant – Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

As we travelled from Ontario back to our home base of Winnipeg, we decided to cross over to the US at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  We were feeling hungry, so we asked around town for suggested local places to grab a bite. Several locals said, “You have to go to The Antlers.”  As a rubber duck with a penchant for adventure, I waddled on over, and I can assure you that dining there is quite the experience, bursting with history, character, and, of course, delicious food.

Let me take you back to the beginning. This legendary establishment has quite a storied past, starting off as the Bucket of Blood Saloon during the Prohibition era. Imagine an ice cream parlour making a hefty profit of $900 while only selling a couple of cones in the month… It did not take long before the government caught wind of it, and miraculously, it emerged as a lemonade stand! Talk about a twist in history!

The Antlers has had six families involved throughout its over four generations of heritage. It was exciting to learn about the infamous Kinneys, two Detroit cops, who bartered their way into creating an impressive collection of taxidermy that adorns the walls and ceilings. The Szabo family now carries on this tradition, ensuring that The Antlers remains a family-owned landmark.

Today, Northern Michigan folks gather at The Antlers, share stories, play some cards and lift their glasses to the stories of the past.

And if you’re into ghost stories, The Antlers even had its moment in the spotlight on A&E’s Biography channel when they explored its haunted legends. Just imagine the excitement of dining among tales of the past!

Now, let’s get to the main event—the food!

I had the pleasure of sampling their fish and chips, as well as the classic hamburger and fries. The fish and chips were delightfully crispy and golden brown, served with a side of tangy tartar sauce. Each bite was a delightful crunch that echoed the thrill of a good hunt! The freshness of the fish, paired with perfectly seasoned fries, made for a meal that was simply outstanding.

The hamburger and fries, on the other hand, were a hearty and satisfying option. Juicy and flavorful, it was cooked to perfection and served on a fluffy bun. The fries were crisp and seasoned just right, giving that nostalgic comfort that everyone loves. You really can sense the “Up North” tradition in each mouthful—rustic, homey, and made with passion.

So, if you’re in the area and craving a meal filled with heart, character, and a dash of history, don’t miss your chance to visit The Antlers Restaurant. Whether you’re there for the stories or the scrumptious Northern Michigan cuisine, you’re in for a quacking good time! Grab a table, soak in the ambiance, and don’t forget to try the poutine while you’re at it—just trust me on this one!

I-95 South North Carolina Welcome Center, Rowland, North Carolina

As I waddled my way from Port Charlotte, Florida, to Cobden, Ontario, I had the thrilling experience of floating through the vibrant state of North Carolina! Now, you might not expect a rubber duck like me to love road trips, but let me tell you, I’m all about those new adventures! One of my favourite stops is always the welcome centers—a perfect place to stretch my little wings, refresh, and soak up all the local insights for future quests. The joy of discovering these local insights is truly unparalleled!

On this particular journey, we stopped at the I-95 South North Carolina Welcome Center, just a skip away from Rowland, and boy, am I glad we did! This spot is open 24/7 for vending and restrooms, which is ideal for a travel-loving duck like me. But here’s the real gem: during the day, the center is staffed by some fantastic folks who genuinely know their stuff.

When we arrived, three extraordinary ladies were there ready to share their knowledge. They listened to our travel story and then went above and beyond to guide us to North Carolina’s hidden treasures—what a quacking good time! They filled our travel basket with recommendations so fantastic that I could hardly contain my excitement.

First up, the magnificent Biltmore Estate in Asheville—can you imagine all those gardens and the grand mansion? I can’t wait to waddle through such a timeless landmark! And then there’s the Whirligig Park and Museum in Wilson, where colourful sculptures will surely call my name to explore!

Oh, and let’s not forget the Yadkin Valley in Mount Airy! My human is bubbling with excitement to visit the local vineyards and relive some Mayberry moments!

How about Aunt Ruby’s Peanuts in Enfield? I’m eager to learn the history behind this iconic agribusiness while snacking on some yummy peanuts!

And let’s be real—the North Carolina Motorcycle Map has me ready to hitch a ride on Goldie! Just think of all those excellent trails I could splash across!

While we didn’t have the luxury to explore North Carolina this time fully, we’re already planning our return trip to visit all these fabulous spots and soak up more of what they suggested. The anticipation is palpable, and we can’t wait to be back!

A huge thank you to the friendly ladies at the welcome center for their guidance. Their warmth and hospitality made our journey even more enjoyable. Travelling is more fun with great people along the way. Until next time, North Carolina—my little duck heart is already quacking with anticipation for our next adventure!

And that Green Cucumber Rum Drink? Talk about a refreshing twist! Its garden-fresh flavor transported me straight to a shady poolside float—divine!

  • Monkey Jungle – Miami, Florida

    Monkey Jungle – Miami, Florida

Quack, quack, and hello, my feathered friends! It’s your favorite rubbery adventurer, Bob, and boy, do I have a splashtastic tale to tell you about one of Miami’s quirkiest gems – the Monkey Jungle!

Located in the lush suburbs of Miami, this vibrant, wild paradise is easily accessible by car or public transport. Picture this: cheeky monkeys swing through the trees, and I bob around, soaking in all the fun!

Let’s travel back to 1933, when a visionary named Joseph DuMond dreamed up this monkey wonderland. His mission? To create a vibrant tropical retreat where monkeys could frolic freely while curious humans marvel at their antics! Imagine a place where colorful primates leap and bound.

Now, here’s a fun twist: In the 1950s, Monkey Jungle became a superstar in the world of conservation! It launched breeding programs for some of the cutest critters – the adorable squirrel monkeys and the clever capuchins. I love how they work to protect our furry friends while educating all the curious visitors about wildlife. It makes my little rubber heart burst with joy!

Over the years, Monkey Jungle has seen quite a few changes, but one thing’s for sure: it has always stayed true to its mission of conservation and education. When Joseph DuMond floated off in the 1970s, his family stepped in to keep his dream alive. Then, in the late ’90s, the park found new guardians who infused fresh excitement and ideas. I zoom around in my little pond, soaking up all that positive energy!

Today, Monkey Jungle is buzzing with life! It’s home to over 300 spirited primates, and there’s no shortage of fun for everyone who visits!

From the playful antics on “Monkey Island” – where monkeys leap and play like there’s no tomorrow – to guided educational tours filled with fascinating facts, there’s something for every animal lover and adventure seeker.

Imagine me happily floating along, watching those silly monkeys play tag; it’s a riot of fun and laughter!

As the name suggests, the park focuses on the monkeying around (pun intended), but more residents add additional life to Monkey Jungle.

Just when I thought I had no more friends to discover, I spotted a giant lizard hanging out with the monkeys while colourful fish danced in the pond.

A little further into the labyrinth, friendly turtles were busy eating lunch while a sleepy lizard bathed in the sun.

I even visited with various feathered friends of many colours who squawked to get my attention.

The park collaborates with various organizations to protect endangered species and share the magical message of biodiversity with everyone. As I float along, my little duck heart swells with pride for the hard work that goes into keeping our planet happy and healthy for all creatures great and small. It’s truly inspiring to see such dedication to our natural world.

So, whether you’re a fellow rubber duck, a monkey enthusiast, or someone looking for a wild day out, Monkey Jungle promises an unforgettable connection to nature. As I drift in my pond, I can’t help but look forward to the laughter, learning, and love that this extraordinary haven will continue to inspire for years to come! Quack on, and let the adventures begin!

  • Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Cape Florida Lighthouse – Key Biscayne, Florida

Quack!  Bob here, ready to share the exciting story of the Cape Florida Lighthouse, tucked away in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.  From my cozy spot bobbing in the waves, I’ve discovered the towering lighthouse’s fascinating journey through history, and it’s a tale filled with adventure!

The Cape Florida Lighthouse, completed in 1825, is the oldest structure in Miami-Dade County.  It’s a testament to resilience, having weathered countless storms and illuminated myriad journeys.  Imagine the sight of ships sailing through the shimmering waters of Biscayne Bay, guided safely home by the warm glow of this iconic beacon!

In the early years, the lighthouse faced its fair share of challenges, including damage during the Second Seminole War.  The dedicated lighthouse keeper, a brave soul, battled the elements and war tensions.  In 1860, the lighthouse underwent a remarkable transformation, rising to a towering 95 feet and adorned with a new brick facade and a shiny Fresnel lens, making its light visible from miles away.

Throughout the years, the lighthouse faced the wear and tear of both nature and time, leading to periods of neglect.  However, some dedicated folks stepped in during the 1970s to restore this historical gem, ensuring it could continue shining brightly for generations.  The restoration did not stop there.

The final restoration was completed in 1996, bringing the structure as close to the 1855 standards as possible.  Today, it’s a stunning sight within the state park, drawing visitors eager to walk in the footsteps of history.

Can you picture the keeper climbing the narrow, winding stairs to light the lantern each night?  I certainly can!  But, alas, the astute lighthouse attendant caught me trying to sneak in, noticing that I did not meet the height requirement, so no climbing for me.  However, the wonderful man allowed me to peek inside with my humans.

The lighthouse played a strategic role during the Civil War, with the area buzzing as Union and Confederate forces plotted their next moves.

Adjacent to the lighthouse is the charming cottage of the lighthouse keeper.  This quaint building is a treasure trove of stories, preserving the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to keeping the lighthouse aglow.

The keeper likely shared unbelievable stories over dinner with friends who would occasionally make the arduous journey to visit!  Just imagine them gathered around a hearty meal in the cozy keeper’s cottage, sharing laughter and tales of the sea while the delicious smells wafted through the air.

You can also realize the moments of solitude as the keeper and his family sat around the fire playing games and crafting before retiring in the evenings.

And, let’s not forget the most essential building near the cottage….even lighthouse keepers need a place to read the newspaper!

Today, families and adventurers flock to the park, marvelling at the picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean.  They joyfully climb the narrow stairs of the lighthouse, feeling the thrill of reaching the top!

So, when exploring Southern Florida, take a little detour through Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park to appreciate the Cape Florida Lighthouse, a true beacon of history, hope, and adventure.  And if you catch sight of a cheerful rubber duck bobbing along in the surf, it’s probably me, Bob, soaking in the wonders of this incredible landmark!  Quack, quack!
